    .bkf microsoft backup files...

I dont know what is wrong but the 100 gig file simply will not operate. When I try to mount the file in the backup program it says that there is no information contained in the file... but there clearly is since it is over 100 gigs! I think I remember it asking me to insert a floppy disc at the end of the backup process which I didnt do... could that have messed everythign up? Is there no way to get the files back?

Didnt work. I cant get the file to work.
  3. I just upgraded from a k8 A64 to a 939 Nforce 3 ultra A64. I booted up the system.... it went nuts looking for drivers. I ran the newest forceware, installed the video drivers and then reset the system. Well, it got to the xp loading screen and freezed. Every time I tried, it froze in the same spot. So I tried a safe mode boot and that always freezes on Mup.sys What the heck am I supposed to do now shy of a reformat!
  4. Ok, so I'm at a loss here. I was able to get back into windows before with the "last known good setup" option. I tried to uninstall all the mother board drivers and video drivers. When I restarted this happend. Safe mode: Gets to mup.sys, hangs for a second, reboots Last known good: runs the windows xp booting up screen, freezes Normal boot: runs the windows xp booting up screen, gives a quick BSOD and reboots I have no clue what to do shy of ripping out the drive, copying my stuff to another computer and reformatting. I'de rather not have to rip out the drive since I have 3 drives and 6 partitions in my computer that would be great for backup.
  5. I really should slap my self for this one..... "last good config" worked.
  6. If I were to convert a disc to a dynamic disc, does it delete the information thats already on the disc?
  7. My mom and sister cant seem to grasp the concept of clicking no or exiting out of popups and popped up programs from the internet. I just fix the computer for them. They had so much ad ware, and other unwanted tool bars and shit like golden palace all over the computer that it would barely run! I just got back and the shit has really hit the fan. I have to ctrl + alt + delete to actually even start up explorer under their profiles. I want to configure a way to make sure they dont install programs from the internet. I cant block them out 100% because they will explode if they cant install something so I want to create a way for a popup to come up that says "Hold the fuck on here, you are about to install something, now I've told you never to install stuff, are you 100% sure you should install this??? actually, call arin first and make sure you should install this" something along those lines would be nice. I dont know if there is any way to do this in mmc, and I kind of doubt it, but is there atleast anything I can do, like maybe prevent installation from the internet. That atleat would stop some stuff if they would have to install downloaded exe's or from cd's rather than stuff that popups from the web. Thank.
  8. I put my hardrive on an ide channel rather than one of the sata channels. In there I was able to get into windows so I installed my motherboard drivers and sata and raid drivers. then everything worked.
  9. Even if the drive is currently partitioned with primary and extended partitions? Basically, I dont see any reason not to convert to dynamic then? Right? I could convert, and then freely change my partition sizes. Correct?
  10. I was using my computer and noticed a little box popping up in the lower corner saying that windows had a problem writing to E:$w....something, but it was $ something. Anyways, I srugged it off.... then it happened again, but it was on another drive letter... drive G. So I read the message in full and it said data may be lost, may be a hardware problem.... all that jazz. So the computer was still running fine. I coudl play games, move files, open up everything but I decided to restart anyways to see if that would clear up the problem. the computer got to the point where it would boot off the hardrive, and just sat there. I restarted, the hd light was flickering in a strange pattern over and over, then stopping and getting stuck at that same spot again. I waited for a while and it finally gave me the not a system disc error. So what the heck happened? I dont think my hardrives are fried, because they still worked. To me, it sounds like a hardware problem with the ide channels! Was I right to assume this? I went out and ordered an athlon 64 motherboard and processor anyways because I wanted to upgrade, but i figure this will solve the problem because it sounds like the ide channels on the motherboard were crapping out. Thoughts?
  11. ok, I ran home today in hopes of picking up a new mobo and all that jazz. Well, I ended up ordering it from newegg so now I have an athlon 64 system on its way! Well, I drove back up to college and fiddled with the system. As I expected, the raid blew up. I dont konw why, it only detected half the drives..... it just doesnt work? So I plugged my hardrives in my IDE channels (had my cd and dvd in those) and they worked. So the board works, just not the raid. I have a bazillion drives so I need every IDE channel I can get! So basically I have a athlon 64, new mobo with 2 ide's and 4 RAID channels so I'll just have a different device on every different ide/raid slot.
  12. One of my backup hardrives is split into 3 partitions: 09.77 NTFS Primary 09.77 NTFS Extended 55.02 NTFS Extended A long time back it was my main drive and I had intended for it to be system/games/storage but I no longer use it for that. Right now I have it as a pagefile/games/photography. I would like to take my pagefile off that drive and make it two partitions. Basically 20/60. Is there a quick an easy way to do this or do I need to move all files from all partitions off of it, whipe it clean, and repartition it.

    Partition help...

So let me get this straight.... if I were to take one of my drives: Disk 2 009.77 GB NTFS Primary (Page File) 009.77 GB NTFS Extended 055.02 GB NTFS Extended which does not have my OS installed on it. It's just important files.... and I were to hit convert to dynamic... I wouldnt lose anything, and I could change my stuff around?
  14. When ever I view my one storage drive, explorer will display the pointer with the hour glass, pause, crash, and reload the desktop and icons, closing out any explorer windows open. Why? I can see the drive and navigate through out it fine in dos. I even ran a scandisc on the whole thing and nothing came up. What could be happening? How can it be fixed? I know this is kind of a veague question, but I'm thinking maybe windows looks at a file to display information about the drive which is causing it to crash. I probibly delete this file and have windows make a new one from scratch, possibly eradicating the problem. Any input? Thanks. -Windows XP Pro, sp1 w/ all the updates.
  15. fast and furiously changing it from Thumbnail to detailed view worked. * drunk. sorry.

    Ps/2 Rate?

I remember using a program called PS/2 Rate with my old ps/2 mouse in windows 98. I could make my mouse refresh at like 200mhz and it would glide across the screen so freaking smoothly, kinda like the mouse on a macintosh. like, if I were to move it fast all over the screen, it would update so fast you couldnt see a break in them movement. Well, in xp, is there a way to make my usb mouse as smooth as this?

    Ps/2 Rate?

I adjusted it in the properties and plugged it in as a ps2 mouse. It still looks like awful shit...same speed as USB. and ps2rate program doesnt work in xp I take it kuz I cant get that to run.

    Ps/2 Rate?

    What about usb?
  19. How would one slipstream the latest drivers? Also, how would I go about running that script so it would install updates for IE, WMP, DX9 and other xp updates? Maybe even throw in some of my commonly used utilities and applications like winamp, aim, and winrar.
  20. I quicly went from thumbnail view to folder detailed and it worked. what the hell?

    Sharing Violations....

I work for PennDot Photogrammetry and I am constantly editing, renaming, moving, and copying huge files on several different drives. Being that I work for the state, they have crazy and unreliable setups that make my job misrible. I get sharing violations 90% of the time I try to do anything. I dont know why either. Sometimes I will be editing a folder of files I've created yet I can only access and edit half of them while the other half I have to edit and store in some other folder as new files because I get sharing violations and destination file in use.... when its clearly NOT in use and its NOT violating anything! Is there something I can do, or better yet, is there someting I can tell my admin to do so this doesnt happen all the time?

    Sharing Violations....

We are running windows 2000 on the machine I am working off of and we have NT, 2000 and XP here in the office. I guess really there isnt much I can do personally, the admin would have to do it. I dont know what could be running in the background, and actually, I'm sure nothing is because I can even restart and still have it tell me its open. Also, with the sharing violation, I'll have a folder with say, 20 images all created by someone else. For some reason I'll be able to edit and save over all of them except for 3 or 4 of them, which I just dont understand.

  24. I see benchmarks all the time for the new 64bit processors but I am curious to see how the benchmarks would be if someone tested the 64bit system on windows xp 64bit and then on 32bit. What actually becomes faster? Jsut the operating system or everything? Will only programs/games/applications that have been programmed to take advantage of the 64bit processor really be the only things to have a huge gain when using windows xp 64bit? I'm a little grey on the whole topic... can we discuss this?
