  1. I just figured out that I need to press F5 during the installation to get ACPI (Multiprocessor) kernel.. I got a hang when I update from MPS to ACPI under Device Manager. Unlucky for me that I only read this discussion only today. This is what I gone through. When I enable ACPI and APM, Win2k reboot for not reason during boot up. When I enable ACPI only, then it works great, but Windows 98 lost its standby and it won't shut down (completely turn off my system). Looks like I can only have one of them but not both of them.. any clues?
  2. I am not sure if I get your scenario correct, you have a new drive, now you want to have two hard disk running win98 (seperately). Is that correct? Or your new hard drive already have Windows 2000 in it? If either of them applies do this. Unplug your new hard drive (pull off the ide cable), now use a boot disk (with cdrom support), your 8gb will appear to be your c drive, and install your windows in it (format c: /u/s + fdisk /mbr then install windows). After installation, plug back your ide cable for your new hard drive. NOw, if you want to boot from yoru new hard drive, then you use boot sequence of c, cdrom, a or any combination with C as the primary boot. If you want it to boot from your 8gb windows, then choose D, A, SCSI under the BIOS setting. Those settings are set from BIOS (Award). If you have some other type of BIOS, say AMIBIOS, your setting would be something like 2nd IDE Channel/3rd IDE Channel (Sorry, not too familiar with AMIBIOS)
  3. I have a problem here but doesn't know whether it applies to everyone or just me. I found out that it seems like Windows 2000 marks bad clusters on my hard disk anyhow. I reformat my hard disk under unconditional format, it report no bad clusters. After I reinstall Windows 2000 a few days, it run scandisk and report bad clusters again. This time, I low-level format my drive and conventional format my drive and redo everything again, the same thing happens after a week. Coincidently, one of my friend having the same problem as me (Different drive). It could be coincidently both of us having hardware problem, but I just want to know is there anyone out there having similar problem? If there is a big number of us having such problem then we can confirm it is a bug.
  4. I have a problem, I think Win2K is marking my clusters as bad (which I think they are good clusters). I use unconditional format and it appears no bad cluster after that. After a fresh installation, the problem reappear again. Similar case experienced by my friend who use Windows 2000 (2195). I wonder anyone having this problem? Or is it a bug with chkdsk/chkntfs program that simply mark clusters as bad anyhow?

    Basic Disk vs Dynamic Disk

Under the Disk Management, we can convert from basic disk to Dynamic disk. What is the benefit of doing so other than having more than 4 partition?

Quake 3 Arena on SMP system

Anyone managed to get Quake 3 Arena to work on SMP system? I seems to get an instant hang on Windows 2000 (2195) when I start Quake 3. System Spec: Geforce DDR Nvidia Reference Driver 3.75 256 Mb PC133 Dual Celeron 450 Mhz.

Anyone break the 24hr uptime barrier yet?

I think I beat everyone's record. I restart my system more than 30 times a day, reinstall Windows 3 times a week (Hella of trouble with CD Writer/Geforce/Scanner/Sound Card). 50% 50% chance of getting a hang when I run any 3D graphics. I get quite sick of getting any games to run. Infact, I rather have it on Windows 98, a much more stable platform for games.

    Windows 2000 Professional BSOD

you have a a writer dun you? you have directcd 2.5? upgrade to 3.0 by not putting any cd in the cdrom drive... that is how i deal with it..
  9. Solutions 1. Downclock your FSB so that your AGP run at 66 Mhz. 2. Use 3.78 Reference Driver. 3. Disable AGP under DXDIAG if there is problem. 4. If you have RC5Client, try to exit the program when running Quake. 5. Very frequently, I find that deleting the q3config file solve the problem.

Quake 3 Arena on SMP system

Hello Darth Bobo I emailed to Epox and request they update the BIOS for 1Mb Chip. Haven't got any reply from them so far. I think they won't reply me at all. My question, what if I buy from them the 2 Mb EEPROM BIOS Chip and fit it into my mobo, so that I can flash to the newest BIOS. Does it work? I could hardly find anyone with the same mobo as well. Let me ask you, do you get occasional junkies+Flashing+multicolour ASCII character flashing all over the screen when you do a hardware RESET? I do, and I got a feeling it is the BIOS problem.

Quake 3 Arena on SMP system

No doubt. The uniprocessor users far much more than the multiprocessor users. But this shouldn't make it a good reason for not supporting SMP platform. For me, I am terribly upset by Epox mainboard manufacturer. I think Epox would be my first and my last mainboard from them.
  13. I am getting much stable drivers now. I think we need to let the driver get matured a little. It should take another 2 months or 3 months. More and more of the lock up issue has been resolved. I can at least play Opengl and Direct3D program much fluently since 3.5X. But we are still 10-16 fps behind Windows 98. Hope Nvidia will improve that. I still get occasional lock up from time to time especially when switching mode in Direct3D or OpenGL. Hope they will iron it out soon.

Yuppie, Do you have any SoftMenu or jumper setting for bus speed other than 100 Mhz for your SuperMicro motherboard? I will be buying the dual slot 1 GX chipset with SCSI onboard soon.

Quake 3 Arena on SMP system

After some try by turning off the RC5Client, I seems to be able to work around with Q3 now. It is quite a bit more stable. Although occasionally it hangs particularly when changing resolutions. I do not see any benefit of using SMP system here, it seems to me as though there is only about 0.3 fps benefit when I run in 1024x768 32 bit colour, High Detail, Trilinear mode. The fps score is still 17 fps lower than Windows 98. I hope Nvidia will at least come out with something very much better than what they have now by tomorrow. Thanks for your tips anyway. -- Simon BTW, I am using Windows 2000 (2195)/Windows 98. Dual Boot. >Hi, >Maybe this is a little after the fact, but >I had the same problem with Q3. One CPU or Two ?

I have a dual Celeron system, I do not find any great improvement compared to a uniprocessor system. Anyway, most programs are single threaded, therefore, it would not benefit the SMP users out there. The benefit of using SMP system is, you can have more things done at the same amount of time, not you can have more things done in less time (which many people misunderstood). It can only show its potential when the program is multithreaded. I do agree that Celerons are crippled by its low amount of cache compared with PIII or Xeon. But when considering the number of Celerons you can buy when you buy a Xeon, I think Celeron definitely win the performance/price throne.

Quake 3 Arena on SMP system

Thanks for your tips. But I think I will probably stick to Windows 98 for the time being as gamers platform. I use Windows 2000 for normal work will do. Probably I have already tried almost every tweaking method available. I think it has nothing to do with my hardware. It can either be the driver not too optimized enough or my BIOS isn't compatible enough. I guess even by a week time, I will still have similar problem, they couldn't possibly fix it that soon coz SMP users are almost considered as minority. Uniprocessor mode still work fine though. -- Simon

Quake 3 Arena on SMP system

I don't think I can find any PSU more than 300w in UK, unless I go and look for those exotic PSU for those servers. I personally think 300w for this system is a bit overkilling. Well, I mess around with quite a lot of thigns today. Resetting the CPU to 300 Mhz (both), Use PC100 Memory for this stuff. Set apperture size from 4 Mb to 64 Mb. Using the latest Nvidia Reference Driver, tweak around with DXDiag. No luck in getting it to run. Reference Drier for NT4.0 3.68 seems to be the most stable that I have found so far. I don't think I want to flash a Tyan BIOS into my Epox BIOS. It will simply roast my BIOS. I think I am going to give up on this. By the way, what system are you having?

Quake 3 Arena on SMP system

Marksmanx, I haven't have problem under dxdiag, it won't lock up my system. Under Quake3, when I close Quake3 and restart again, it reached the grey skin and it just hang there. BTW, I have the appeture size set to 4 Mb, but still doesn't work. Reference Driver 3.76 from Reactorcritical. I have the latest BIOS update, that is May 1999. The manufacturer didn't make any BIOS update since then. If you don't mind, could you send me your Quake3 Config file to my email address (slkh@hotmail.com)? Thanks.

Markmanx, The detonator 3.68 doesn't work out well, they hang straight away I start Quake. By the way, for those who have Geforce and SMP system, the way to enable SMP capability in Quake 3 is Goto Console, type \r_smp 1 \vid_restart

Same error message... I think Bleem probably won't make it compatible with Windows 2000 anytime from now. Probably won't, even in the future. Unless Windows 2000 become the main Operating System and takes over Windows 98/95
