  1. Has anyone else noticed in the latest build of WinXP/IE that when ever "Microsoft" it displays crap about MS like a link to thier page, stock info and lots of other crap. Now it wouldn't be so bad if they didn't point out this feature but it puts an annoying purple dotted line under that word. Luckily you can turn it off in the advanced options under Smart Tags. But just got me thinking about what they are going to do in the future to point them selves out.

  2. I had this happen to me too. What I figured out was going wrong was the first time I booted I went into safemode and ran through the reg hack to disable Windows Activation. When doing this it for some reason pooches the services database and only a handful of services are started. What you should have done is booted normally the first time into Windows and go through the MS Agent welcome crap. Then try to login. Then you will get an error message saying something about reinstalling windows. At that point reboot and go into Safe Mode and run the reg hack. I have reproduced this serveral times and it has something to do with the Windows Activation being started in that wizard, it might be creating the HWID (im not sure though). The down side to this is the only way I have been able to fix it is a clean install. An inplace upgrade will not work, I have tried that too.

  3. Not with any MS app, The only app that will do that is partition magic. I would strongly advise against that however. I had a customer call in after he had done that and it FUBAR'ed his system. From what I understand powerquest is trying to make Patition magic compatible but I don't know when it will be. The only thing you can do now is fdisk and chop the drive up from there.

  4. I don't want this to come out like I am being an a-hole cuz that is not what I am trying to do.

Just go and buy a hollywood+ card, these cards work PERFECTLY under Win2k. I have been through the whole software decoder scene and it was a major pain. You can pick these cards up for about 50 bucks US and they are worth every penny.

  5. Sure this whole thing was a joke and you were just trying to trick us wink. You're such a llama. You realized half way through this that what you were saying was completely stupid and little by little you changed what you were saying.

  6. Ge0ph,

MSDOS.sys is on Windows2000 and the Windows dir may or maynot be there depending on whether or not it was an upgrade from 9x. If it was the system root will be windows. Holy **** i just defended J something or other. Although I still think that he is fulla **** about putting DOS on there and games working.

P.S. This is MSGuy at home =)

  7. Who told you that and what were they smoking? How could installing dos help NT? NT is a 32 bit OS dos is not. They would not have anything to do with each other. I run Windows 2000 Pro as my main gaming rig and I have NO problems.

  8. Alright kiddies. I will read you what is on my RETAIL box.

    Windows 2000 Professional:

-Highest reliability to keep your business running.

-Enhanced security to protect your business data.

-best support for mobile business computing.

-best platform for next generation business technology.

    Windows 98 SE:

-Best platform for multimedia: music, pictures, video.

    -Best support for PC *GAMING*

-Easy home networking and internet setup.

-Broadest support for comsumer hardware and software.

This was taken directly from the Retail box. It is clear that Microsoft is NOT pitching this to the general consumer. The only reason it might be is that places like compUSA, officemax and others are just going to try to sell a new product and the average user will not look at the back and just see Windows 2000 and think "oh this must be the next 9.x".

  9. This is to all the people that whine about this and that not working.

Windows2000 is NOT a consumer product it IS a business product. I work for MS and get really tired of ppl saying this doesnt work or this wont run like it did in 9.x. Well unless it is on the HCL you are on your own. When we go live on the 17th I am betting that over half of all the questions will be "my _________ (insert non-HCL component) is not working, FIX it!" and my response will be "well SIR did you check the HCL before you upgraded?" Basically don't whine because all of your hardware doesnt work right away and its not MS's fault that your third party hardware doesnt work. Microsoft does NOT write drivers!

  10. bigfitty,

A while back you posted this msg:

"i just d\l'd the latest nt 4.0 drivers from aureal's site and they work great!

    they are vers 2.04

    they are here: ftp://ftp3.a3d.com/pub/Public/Drivers/Vortex/nt2.04.06.zip

    they enabled my rear speakers!

as with any nt 4.o drivers you get the message that they are not designed for your hardware (or something to that effect) but they seem to work fine.

    i am using an mx30 with b3"

I downloaded these drivers too and when I go to update my drivers it starts to install them and then at the end when it displays the aureal splash screen I get what appears to be a memory dump and my system reboots and the drivers do not take. My question to you is how did you get them to install? I have been trying desperately to get my rear speakers to work on my Aureal SuperQuad 2500 but its still a no go. Can you please tell me how you did it?

  11. The PantherXL right now does not work in Win2000. If you goto www.pantherxl.com they have a msg board there where the topic is quite frequently about win2k drivers(mostly brought up by me). I have come to the conclusion that the ppl at Madccatz when they aquired this technology from Assassin3D did not know how to properly write drivers for it so they basically tweaked the existing drivers. Now that Win2000 is upon them they are completely clueless on how to properly impelement the Direct Input needed to get this controller to work. They do say however that they will have Win2000 drivers before or just after the release but I highly doubt it.
