  1. I have someone called "Krups" who makes my coffee and "George" cooks my bacon.

"Tiffany" makes my toast and my butler "Philips" reheats my food.

My washing is done by someone who I only know by their initials "LG" and my clothes are dried by J.Edgar's great grandson.

There's also a quiet Korean named "Kawai" who entertains me occasionally.

    Argh, what am I doing.....

  2. I have my account forward to current ISP account at the moment but I just logged in and found that I have been given another 6 invites. So here it is - I will give them away and here's the checklist:

    1. 30 posts on the board (nobody can ask that many SIMS2 questions surely)

    2. Monty Python fan (not a requirement but good anyway)

    3. Can promise me that they've given something to a Tsunami relief fund

Then either leave an email with some kind of "NOSPAM" in it or drop me a PM.

<edit> Tomay and Akiss just got sent one each. Only 4 now.</edit>

  3. It's just terrible.

I dunno how the rest of the world it opening their wallets, but the Australian Gov't has kicked the can to the tune of $60M plus troops, planes, medics etc. The Australian people have matched that in donations up to this evening, including $1M from collections from the people watching the fireworks at Sydney harbour.

There were many doctors and nurses who just left their holidays and went straight to the airport and waited for any airline to stick them on planes.

I thought about signing up to do stuff but as my expertise is IT and Bushfires I decided that I would only be good for lifting and shoving and given that I would need food too, it was better just to get the VISA out and go visit the Red Cross site.

  4. The one that really gets me is "untitled thread".

Phillip, would it be possible to either disable the message content box until there is a subject typed in or provide an error message if there is no subject.

Next, like pmistry I would like to see a SIMS2 specific room and the mods shift any new SIMS2 threads from other places into it. Then lock the threads with 1 or 2 posts with a re-director to the 110+ post thread cause they all need the same answer. That being "get a ATI or NVidia card and re-download the full directx9c".

I can't remember being that I am writing this and can't check, but is there a "sticky" feature here? If so it would help the SIMS2 stuff.

Perhaps also a "readme first" that comes up when you create an account where the first 3 points are:

    1. Don't ask for warez, cracks, serials or illegal ways to circumvent copy protection.

    2. Don't flame or incite flaming.

    3. Don't expect answers by email.

This wold have an Accept/Reject choice at the bottom and if you don't accept, no account.

I realise that Phillip and the mods have much other stuff to do however as this board is a commercial work in progress, perhaps some of this isn't a bad idea.

Another, though a little silly given that this is a board focused on Windows, perhaps a single "Console Issues" room for the inevitable questions that occasionally surface.

Just my thoughts for stuff for the new year.

  5. As one of the first NTC members to get Christmas (I don't know of any Kiwi's) I'd like to take this opportunity to wish all a Merry Christmas and for those who don't celebrate Christmas, a Merry Festivus.

Drive safe, spend time with & hug your families.

I guess we're all looking forward to the next round of Sims2 and DirectX questions in a few days. smile

  6. I vote for the following:

Freeman - George Clooney or Ben Affleck (depening on desired age)

GMan - Peter O'Toole or Christopher Walken

Alyx - Lucy Liu or Uma Thurman

Any movie must also include the Busey Brothers in armed forces capacity, Also Michael Ironside (little Starship Troopers nod there). Eddie Murphy would make a great "freaking-out soldier".

Although Sigourney Weaver could play Alyx opposite Clooney.

Scientists could included Donald Sutherland and Sean Connery in cameos.

The following characters should be included as alien fodder:

    Kevin Costner

    Richard Gere

    Steven Segal

    Any advances on this list?

  7. I may have gone a little over the top with "best FPS ever" to the point where I sound like a 16yo fanboy.

I'm playing it again for the sheer fun. My absolute favourite weapon is the fully upgraded sniper rifle which gives you point and click assasination power with no sound, recoil or sway.

Favourite levels are the New York ones because of the real feel of them. Having been to some of these places when I was on holiday makes it even cooler. Same feeling I get playing Max Payne.

  8. Yeah I know Google Toolbar makes it's daily report to the overlord, but that doesn't worry me. More concerned with malware/spyware that does unknown things with my machine and my data.

Google knows everything about me anyway as I have an active GMail account.

    Vive la revolution

  9. I'm going to say it right now. As far as I'm concerned, the best FPS ever, on either PC or Console is Deus Ex (the original).

Best story & gameplay plus new adaptations of the genres, not to mention a great redesign of the unreal engine. Even if it is a little long, treated as episodes, it has great replay-ability.

Now with this argument that is getting very silly - consoles do have major advantages, however in order for them to remain viable games have to be written in older technology or you upgrade your console entireley and put the old one in the kids room or use as a boat anchor.

PC games are able to take advantage of new technology and older technologies can use the games by turning down the details etc.

Now, for people who don't play FPS but rather RTS or TBS or solitare a console is not the go. This is why PC still is the best all round games platform as it is not limited to shoot/fly/drive/fish etc games.

That being said, i'm still waiting for prices of HALO2 for Xbox on eBay to come down to the $AU40 that I'm willing to pay for any games.

  10. Probably to protect from script kiddies.

I run two virus scanners (McAfee & Innoculan), two spyware programs (Spybot and Ad-Aware), BHO Demon, Google Toolbar & a firewall plus all the stuff that comes with XPSP2 in order to keep the bastards honest.

    I don't like infiltration.

  11. I've been catching up on some music that I've missed over the last year on dial-up. Streaming anything can be a pain on a modem.

Plus some virus scan updates and some game updates. AS for the quota, once the inital "oh my gosh" phase wears off, I doub't I'll burn the whole 8gb. As for the price, there's AU70c per $US1 roughly so for you that would be 37*0.7=$26. I got my modem for $AU50 off ebay.

Given previously I was paying $32/month for unlimited dial-up and burning about 350-400mb, I'm on a good deal, plus cheaper long-distance, to-mobile and international calls through ISP.

  12. Mutasem,

Basic story of HL is your standard conspiracy thoery.

The guy in the Blue Suit (GMan) is the administrator of the Black Mesa facility (supposedly with Gov't links ie Area 51, CIA, NSA).

So, these scientists work out that using some new fangled gizmo they can teleport, but only using a triangulation of a co-ordinate on the Xen world. As a consequence, the Xen dwellers get mighty pissed off about this interuption and the fact that earth is much nicer than Xen, so when the cascade failure occurs (during the sample testing) they take the opportunity to have a hunting vacation on earth. Actually GMan likely knew this would happen and ordered the test to continue regardless.

Then Freeman decides that he doesn't like the new neighbours and begins to ask them to leave and GMan decides that this is quite nice, but has the military go in anyway as there are always more soldiers to fight.

Basically GMan is the equivalent to "Smoking Man" from X-Files who attempts to control/influence both sides to his own ends, which is why you can't shoot him, ever.

  13. JHC, keep your shirt on. There is only one NTC staff member, and that's Phillip. Everyone else posts when they feel like it/have time, so don't go around demanding people help you.

    That being said.

At the end of HL you need to use the jump pads and ledges to get as high up as possible, then use the final jump pad to jump into the big baby's head after it opens. At this point you should have shot out the 3 yellos crystals that recharge him and done significant damage so his head will open.

There will be a green portal. Jump through that and you be taken to another location (battlefield) on Xen where GMan tells you that humans are winning then you get zapped to an Osprey flying in space/another dimension where GMan makes you an offer you can't refuse. Either you work for him, or he sends you to a valley where there are hundreds of the wasp-launching three armed things that get very cranky. Depening on which of these you choose you get a "Deceased" or "Awaiting Assignment" message and then cut to credits.
