how do you hack an AT power supply?

I think you mean an ATX supply. The ATX supply design is "always on" with a relay start switch which then closes the circuit. You would be better using an AT supply that has an actual switch which controls the power and was used in older systems.

    half life won't work

If you have a vaild license you will need to install STEAM to get all latest updates. Just download the STEAM client and install. You need to set up a STEAM account with a valid e-mail address. It will ask for a valid CD-key and then copy your entire half-life installation into itself and then update it. You will then have access to all the programs you are entitled to with the CD-key plus updates and an improved UI. Updates for HL and related games are no longer available on the web. You will need at least cable to do this effectively.

    Home Build PC

armbandbob, I do have to ask, why are you installing 98SE? With hardware like that, the only decent choice is XP. I don't think 98SE will know what to do with 2gb RAM and you may be wasting your money. Given you bought the board, processor and I'm assuming all the rest, the vendor should have been able to sell you an OEM XP disk.
  8. Last week i got a new Seagate 7200rpm 200gb 8mb buffer drive. Also got a Sony CPD-G520 21" trinitron monitor for $AU400 ex gov. Nice. http://displaysbysony.com/display/model.jsp?pCode=CRT&pModelId=555

    shutdown link ?

You can but from memory you need to have account privileges(sp?) on the remote machine as there is no login prompt, it just takes you local details and passes them through. Also, only accounts in the administrator group on the machine you're trying to telnet to have telnet ability unless you extend the access in group policies. In order to use this, you need to be pretty snazzy with commandline operation and you can't see squat. Really only good for remote operation of daemon type processes. STiX - get a price on pcAnywhere or find an equivalent. Then set up a modem dedicated to this program that you can dial into. From memory the license allows each pcAnywhere server to install the dialler client on unlimited machines - you can only use one at a time. This can be expensive if you live long distance. Alternatively, use the native VPN setup in XP to have a private network between you and your Mum and then access that way. Only allow pcAnywhere to be accessed via that VPN link to limit security risks. Does anyone have an opinion on terminal services solutions?

    shutdown link ?

You could enable a telnet server (SSH2 is better )if the machine is an NT deriviant. You can then telnet (SSH) into it and run commands as the local user would. Been ages since I've done this (Uni 3 years ago) and wouldn't know if there were any problems with such. Better idea is a pcAnywhere type program either by direct dial or over the web. WinVNC is available but as it is open source, it can be a security risk. If you really want to go nuts, use MS SMS.

    ? duel monitor?

You need to make the wallpaper as an active desktop item eg jpg or html. If you are running 1024x768 on both, you then make a pic 1024x1536, save it as a jpg and then play with the stretch/zoom/centre settings in display until it looks fine. From memory you can't use a bmp.

    network printer

Be sure "File and printer sharing" is enabled on the PC with the printer. Allow access through WinXP firewall and make sure you are using identical (except IP addresses) network settings. You can do it without that but it's harder. Then share the printer on the PC. On the laptop go to the run line and type \\pc (or whatever the name is) and there should be a printer. Double click that to install drivers and then print. If it is a complex HP printer you may need to install drivers first. There are other methods here (I think APK has a good one). You could also get a router with a USB or parallel print server built in and then the PC doesn't need to be switched on.

    shutdown link ?

The resource kits for OSs issued by Microsoft used to have a shut down app with them whereby any "power user" account could send a command from a remote machine in the form of "shutdown -r 20" or something similar to shutdown, restart etc after a period of time. Don't know if it's still available in WinXP.

    Unreal Engine 3

    Unreal Engine 3

Well I bought the monitor that one may require, on the weekend. http://displaysbysony.com/display/model.jsp?pCode=CRT&pModelId=555 Currently running 1600 x 1200 32bit 100Hz Can do 2048x1536 60Hz max, but I won't use anything under 85Hz. I don't have much other hardware worthy of the "battle of the computers" thread but this'll do. Got it for $AU400 ex gov't. There's something disturbingly satisfying about shooting things at 1600x1200.
  16. From the news story on the expected requirement of $100 PCs which APK responded to I thought of this. The guys who make this http://www.cheapestpc.com.au/ are an offshoot of an Australian company who I have had successful dealings with buying hardware and consumables from. (http://www.gamedude.com.au/) I'm posting this not as spam, advertising or product placement but merely as a comparison and kick-off point for discussion. You will note that the install and config are Linux/open source based and the price is $AU349 sans monitor. How does this rate to cheap stuff available locally to others?

    Measuring Internet Usage

I use DUMeter. Not free but works well and monitors all traffic to and from a machine. Obviuosly, if there is more than one machine on the network, you'll need to install it on all or find something else.

    more hijackings

Are you running a software modem that appears as a "Lucent WinModem" or a "HCF Modem Enumerator". This could be the modem config utility asking you what country you live in so it can set the dialling properties. I get that with the WinModem that is intergrated into my mainboard each time I re-format.

Answer to life the universe and everything

True, but I'm assuming it was APK who got the right answer and the Brady Buch quote was just a nod to that film? Even though I'm a brunette man myself, there's something about long blonde hair.

Answer to life the universe and everything

Actually a simlar line was used in one the Brady Bunch movie (the latest one with Ben Stiller's wife Christine Taylor) Mike Brady says something like that when they are about to be kicked out of their house. AS for why I was watching that movie - show me one male over 21 in a western country who doesn't have fond memories of a Marcia Brady moment and I think it was raining that night.

    Blogging?

A tech web-log is a great idea. Would it be feasible to port it to a WikiPedia type setup where anyone could add stuff on. You might need to limit posts to ~4000 words for APK though As for the web-logging craze for personal daily life story, I don't have such lofty delusions of grandeur to believe that for example a 33yo mother of two from Belarus actually gives a flying duck about what I had for dinner and how I feel about international politics. I think the entire concept is to allow people to feel some kind of validation and self-importance by having something there in the electronic wilderness in the vain hope that people comment on it. A better solution is to get a good circle of friends and take a case of wine to a restaurant, get pissed, tell lies and wait till the management kicks you out at 2am - at least you have real people with real faces, voices and names. Not a reply from blondiegirl534 who has a pic of Lisa Simpson in her profile saying "I like to agree with you about GM foods and how the CIA is using them to control the minds of beef cattle". Hmm, I'm done now.
