    install win98 as second OS?

You cannot install 98 if you primary OS is Windows 2000. First Install 98 then Windows 2000. DO NOT UPGRADE DO A FRESH INSTALL. This will enable the dual boot option.

    Guys READ THIS!

The main reason they are doing this is because of money. Microsoft has saturated the PC computer environment with DOS 5.0, 6.0,6.22 in the beginning. Then Windows 95,98,98SE, NT 3.5, 4.0 and now 2000. We don’t want to forget Microsoft Office for us College people who need to type reports. We are so dependent on Microsoft it is sickening! Trust me people will object but you WILL accept it because you NEED it. Microsoft could make it totally incompatible with older version of Microsoft Office and force you to do a convert, which will not allow you to use your old Office applications if you decide that you don’t want it. It is unfortunate Microsoft have stooped to this level. They don’t have any competitors that are even making as much money as they are. Some are just struggling to keep pace with Microsoft It could be a start of something that we have to accept as more countries are going online. I am very uncomfortable of giving my personal information to anyone unless I have to. Last time I did that I got lots of junk mail because I registered my software.

Sorry, another stupid UT/W2k/nvidia question :)

Memory bandwith in 32-bit color is extreme and thus slows the whole card down because it does not have the bandwith to handle it. That's why the GeForce DDR is good is only because of its DDR RAM Sure it DOES bottleneck but it runs silky smooth at 800 x 600 at 32-bit color but, around 1024 x 768 that's a different story. It also can be the processors also, I have this relic dual 450 soon to have 700 Once I get it I will post some benchmarks. I am almost positive that at 1024 x 768 it is all fill rate and not the CPU. But I will find out soon Spending $1200 for dual CPUs and Quake III is REALLY extreme if you ask me. But I am in love playing Quake at 1024 x 768 in 32-bit color ------------------ Dual Intel Pentium II 450 384 MEGS of PC-100 RAM Sound Blaster Live! Quake 3 Arena on SMP system

Quote: Originally posted by slkh: I don't think I can find any PSU more than 300w in UK, unless I go and look for those exotic PSU for those servers. I personally think 300w for this system is a bit overkilling. Well, I mess around with quite a lot of thigns today. Resetting the CPU to 300 Mhz (both), Use PC100 Memory for this stuff. Set apperture size from 4 Mb to 64 Mb. Using the latest Nvidia Reference Driver, tweak around with DXDiag. No luck in getting it to run. Reference Drier for NT4.0 3.68 seems to be the most stable that I have found so far. I don't think I want to flash a Tyan BIOS into my Epox BIOS. It will simply roast my BIOS. I think I am going to give up on this. By the way, what system are you having? PLEASE DO NOT use other manufactures bios for updates I have a Tyan S1832DL Tiger 100 motherboard. I recently ordered two Pentium III 700 E processors I don’t believe RAMBUS is going to be embraced at all by the motherboard manufactures at all. Plus memory companies are considering canceling because of the Royalties involved. Lets see here for 256 MEGS of RAMBUS RAM I can get a total system upgrade! Not worth it and I do need to upgrade. Plus Intel with their buggy I820 and I840 chipsets are not worth the gamble at this point. BX is fine for me and I will continue to use this motherboard till Intel has a really STABLE chipset. You can order a good power supply at http://www.pcpowerandcooling.com/home.htm I ordered my 400WATTs from them. 3 Year warrantee From what I have read and seen people always say use 350+ Watts for a dual system. You might burn out your power supply. So just letting you know now Remember not all systems are alike some people have SMP working and some do not It’s just little things like bios settings that affect the total outcome in SMP mode in Quake III. Just wait one more week and you will see manufacturers releasing updated bios and patches so they can run in Windows 2000 I know it’s frustrating, I must have switched cards around and moved DIMMS around and eventually it WORKED! NT is a VEEEERRRY pick OS and if you have something it doesn’t like. It won’t run properly ------------------ Dual Intel Pentium II 450 384 MEGS of PC-100 RAM Sound Blaster Live! Quake 3 Arena on SMP system

Did you try restoring the CPU to their default speed? Is your system operating well at 300 Watts? From what I read you need atleast 350+ Watts for a dual system. First try this. Remove PC 133 DIMM and run with 128 PC 100 and run Q3. If it locks up try the PC 133 without the PC 100 and if it locks up then it's not the memory Set the Apperature Size to 4MB and don't set it to 256 because the bios allocated the 256 to AGP thus having no resources for Windows 2000 to use. I think a BIOS flash will solve most of your problems to be honest. That new bios flash from Tyan just stopped the grey screen in quake III. If this fails, then contact Epox and ask them are they planning in releasing a bios update for Windows 2000. Let me know if this helped

Quake 3 Arena on SMP system

Try this, go to run and type dxdiag. Then click on the display tab. Then click on Test DirectDraw and Direct3D. If your system locks up. Make sure you get your AGP aperature to the lowest amount and then repeat. If it locks up again start toying with the settings till it works. Also I tried the new 3.76 and I have no problems in Quake III under SMP Toying around is the best way to see what works and what doesn't also makesure you bios is updated. I got my bios updated to Windows 2000 recently. Once I applied it the errors just vanished

Does 3Com LAN cards worth their price ??

Yeah when I made the switch to 3COM my life became very easy also 3COM is best for networking, infact that's pretty much what they did a few years back. Stick with a well known namebrand and you're all set! That's why I have a creative sound card and Adaptec SCSI cards These cards never failed me and always have driver updates

I need NTFS format opinions :)

This is a silly question but I am going to format my primary drive to NTFS. Is there anything I should know about before making this plunge? The command I will do is Format C: /FS:NTFS /A:4096 Is this correct? Or do I need to add anything else with this command?

Sorry for the bad joke Most people execute the unrealED in the wrong folder so I have to tell them it's in the system folder. Freak is correct about the Editor Fix. Give it a try and reply if that doesn't help

I need NTFS format opinions :)

Wow I am shocked with the negative output for formatting FAT32 to NTFS. I heard from people who have NT servers that NTFS is best for NT. Faster performance in NTFS is what I usually hear. Am I mistaken to even tamper with my old FAT32? I am just doing it for NT only. But if there is no performances gain whatsoever then why bother right? I need more technical input though in the pros and cons
