    Shutting down ports

We want a web server running. We are not using IIS (shut off)... we are using the W32 version of Apache.

    Shutting down ports

Thanks for the recommendations. We tried PB, but got more complaints after implentation than before. Now that they have stopped up[censored] PB, it doesn't stop the new cheats. A software firewall would be cool if it didn't add any latnecy to the clients and didn't eat up too much resources. We will look into that. Meanwhile, I would still like to shut down any services that don't need to be open for our simple game server. btw, the OS is w2k server. Thanks again...

    VPN Server Testing

Huh... I had to use Netscape to get the link for the document, then cut and paste the link into IE to download. The document download link is, http://www.microsoft.com/serviceproviders/whitepapers/configuring%20a%20vpn%20solution.doc
  4. I can't complete the login sequence when trying to connect to the IIS ftp server. Any help would be great. The server is behind a Linksys 1 port router. I am using a non-standard port for the FTP server (e.g. 2121). I have tried both forwarding and placing the server in the DMZ, same output. I am WS_FTP as the ftp client, here are the logs for both passive and non-passive connection attempts (my IP addr has been X'd out). Linksys router and FTP server

Quote: So, can you connect on the LAN to that server on 2121? Yep, just tried it. The ftp server worked fine in passive mode before I put the router on. Non-passive never worked with the non-standard port.

    Linksys router and FTP server

Port 21 is not an option. My internet provider has that port blocked to residential users (for good reason). For the record, my ISP knows of my activities, and has given me informal permission to set up this server.
  7. I want all html documents in a folder to be password protected. In other words, IE and Netsape users must enter a username/password to access any document placed in this directory. I managed to get it work by making the directory only viewable by one user account, but the username/password only worked for IE users. Netscape browsers could not view these pages. Any solutions?

    IIS password protect documents

Yep, that indeed covered it, thanks a bunch!

How do you do that? W2k help wasn't very helpful on this topic.

    NAT and routing

I had NAT up and running. Then I decided to swap out the LAN NIC. Now it doesn't work and I can't access NAT through the "Routing and Remote Access" snapin. My local computer has now got a big ol' red X on it in the snapin. If I try and fire up ICS, it tells me I can't because I have NAT running. I can't shut it off because "Routing and Remote Access" won't let me. What the heck is going on? Frustratingly yours,

    NAT and routing

Yep, I had to reinstall w2k also. I guess the next time I will disable or uninstall routing and remote access before attempting this again. Dunno if that will work though.

    Capping FTP

I want to cap the amount of bandwidth available to the FTP service. I also would like to cap HTTP if that is possible. Win2k server is the OS.

    Capping FTP

Quote: kbps is kilobits per second KBps is kilobytes per second.. That's the way I remember it also. kilobits/sec didn't make sense in this instance, for some reason. The global bandwidth throttling doesn't seem to be doing the trick. Do I need another service to be running in order for this to work?

I want to limit my bandwidth.. but how???

On my "Windows Component Wizard", there is a "QoS admission control service" that is not installed. The descriptor for this is "Allows you to specify the quality of the network connection of each subnet". This was found under "Network Services".

I want to limit my bandwidth.. but how???

I believe it can get port specific. Let me repeat, I have never used QoS. After you read those microsoft pages (see earlier clutch post), you will likely know as much as I do. If you can't find QoS on the win2k professional disk, then you likely can't install it unless you go 3rd party. For additional reading, here is the linux-QoS howto. (yuk) http://qos.ittc.ukans.edu/howto/index.html It would be really cool if an experienced QoS user would chime in.

I want to limit my bandwidth.. but how???

It comes with windows 2000 server edition. I doubt it comes with professional. It is not installed by default, so you will have to whip out your win2k disc and add the service. This is not a simple endeavor, proceed carefully.

Quake 3 stuck at 60hz refreshrate..?

there is a maxfps variable in the q3config file. check this out also.

I want to limit my bandwidth.. but how???

QoS (quality of service) is what you need. Don't ask me how to use it because I am stuck. All I know is that you need a 802.1p compliant (whatever that is) NIC in order to use QoS.

I want to limit my bandwidth.. but how???

Either see my post below entitled "capping ftp", or learn to use QoS.

    Capping FTP

Just found what will do the trick. I enabled global bandwidth throttling in IIS. I bumped it down to 5 from 1024 kb/s. I am assuming the kb/s is kiloBytes/sec not kilobits/s. The server is running on my cable modem, and I didn't want FTP and HTTP eating into my gaming bandwidth. If any of you see something wrong, feel free to chime in. Thanks...

    Quality of Service (QoS)

I am trying to install QoS. When firing up the QoS Admission Control Snapin, I get "The expand action cannot complete. The error that occurred was: The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted". Looks like I missed a step somewhere. Anyone no where. I have 2 NIC's: one hooked up to the cable modem, the other to the LAN. The reason I am installing this is to give a high priority to my game server. Is QoS the way to go about it?

    Terminal services port

What port does Terminal services in 2000 use for a remote desktop. Can this be changed?

UT crashes Win2k when it exits!

When in UT, make sure you are in 640 x 480 before you exit. Sucky work around, but it works.

Corrupted screen apon exit for UT or Q3A

This is a lame workaround, but it does work. Before exiting the game, switch to 640x480. If I exit with the game in a higher resolution, I get what you described. If someone has better fix, please post. This workaround is getting old. dual cel-366@458/V3-2000PCI also if someone knows how to get smp working in Q3A with the above setup, post please.
