  1. We have several XP computers that I need to update to XP Sp2.

    I was wondering how could I make an automated update for SP2 with all the options selected the way I need.

    It is ok if I have to visit every computer and just run a setup, I just don't want to answer all the questions and then customize pop up blocker, fire wall... etc.

    Should I make an MSI package or is there a better way?

    Thanks

  2. How can I get user name from the variables in 2000?

    Like is I want to find a cd-rom drive I can use %CDROM%, so what is the one for the user name?

    Is there a list for all variables available in 2000?

    Thanks

  3. Any tips on the setup?

    It just ain't working frown

    Here is the sample of my reg file.

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\Au]

    "NoAutoUpdate"=dword:00000000

    "AUOptions"=dword:00000002

    "ScheduledInstallDay"=dword:00000000

    "ScheduledInstallTime"=dword:0000000E

    "UseWUServer"=dword:00000001

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate]

    "WUServer"="http://xxx.xxx.129.201"'>http://xxx.xxx.129.201"

    "WUStatusServer"="http://xxx.xxx.129.201"

    The above setup only works for users with Admin rights frown

    But even than, if I change "AUOptions"=dword:00000002 to 3 or 4

    it just stops working all together.

  4. What would be the best way to auto install all the current MS security updates on the network if we don't have AD (Novell 5.1).

    Most clients are 2000, but still a few are 95/98, I suppose we can just ignore those for now.

    All users have Power User rights to their local computers.

    There is one Win2k server available but it is stand alone with no AD setup.

  5. if you have alreay mapped then drive then:

    copy {drive leter}:\{path}\*.mdbs {drive leter}:\{path}

    exit

    example:

    copy c:\"files to back up"\*.mdbs d:\mybackup

    exit

    if you have to map the drive then in the begining add:

    net use d [devicename | *] [\\computername\sharename[\volume] [password | *]]

  6. That thing only monitors trafic to/from your computer. i need a full network monitor.

    Like www.ntop.com

    The linux version is free but you have to pay for the Win32 version unless you can compile it... I've tryed but failed frown

    Maybe some one can complile the code?

  7. Anyone is having any problem with it?

    I applied to one IIS5 and it seems to be fine so far. (one day)

    Another dude patches his up and now he is having problem connection with his NetWare server.

    Don’t ask me why you want IIS to have NetWare client smile

  8. What can you guys suggest as an easy to use network monitoring tool that does not create a lot of extra trafic.

    Has to be either freeware or not that expensive to register.

    Maybe below $200 US.

  9. We have a NT server running IIS with secured website....

    All computers but one have no problems accessing it.

    This one pig... when you get to the site you get the log-in screen (we are using NT security for authentication) as expected, type the user name and password, and then it just kicks you back to the login screen and after 3 times says authorization failed.

    I've tried repair function, as well as a few other sites on different servers, all no go... any ideas?

    Win95 OSR2, IE 5.5 SP2 128 bit encryption.

  10. You will not save any $$ buy using Pro.

    Maybe upfront cost, but after a few month and many extra hours spent you will realize that Server was a cheaper/easier way to go.

    Not to mention 10 user connection limit.

    Just think off all time you can save by automating software rollouts, upgrades patches....

  11. As everyone said above those are the same things.

    Symantec calls it ghosting

    Powerquest calls it imaging.

    Say thanks to the copyright law smile

    >>The repair vendor we use..... If they don't know such a simple difference, maybe it is time to look for another vendor, ask you IT guy :P
