With the new design, a new Blog has been incorporated to the website features to bolster the site's previous resources. Port Orchard, Washinton - The MacPicks website has been completely overhauled, removing the old light on black color scheme and the HTML frames. The new design is more user- and browser-friendly, while still presenting arguably the most useful condensed categorized grouping of Macintosh and Apple links found anywhere. With the new design, a new Blog has been incorporated to the website features to bolster the site's previous resources. The site's Perl-driven design has also undergone a complete rewrite, reducing the website's loading time and data handling. Also a part of the redesign is the unique link-checking Verification Engine which runs once every day, testing all the links on the site, and turning them on or off according to daily availability on the web. This feature cuts down on the "404 Site Not Found" errors while using the MacPicks links. The MacPicks link site's main competitor online has always been the venerable SiteLink Mac link website. Now that their site has reached an end, the MacPicks cordially invites all previous SiteLink users to visit the new MacPicks. We hope you'll enjoy the simple portal-like experience enough to use our site regularly. Please feel free to leave a comment about how you feel about our site in the MacPicks Blog. MacPicks: http://macpicks.com Piper Computer Services: http://piperhosting.net MacPicks was started in 1997 as an online service for people looking for Macintosh and Apple Computer information. Originally created by Greg Piper under the Piper Computer Services company website, MacPicks began its life as a simple list of Mac links used as bookmarks for personal use. As the list grew and landed its own domain name, it evolved into the dynamic link portal it is today. Piper Computer Services is a web hosting company located in the Puget Sound area of Washington State. Specializing in small business/personal website design and hosting, they strive to serve their customers with a kind and personable approach. ### Greg Piper Owner/Designer 360-731-2805 prmac ( -at -) macpicks.com
  4. Hello Webmasters and News Posters, NEW CONTENT (Visual) - NVIDIA Slowing Down Graphics Upgrades? QUOTE: "If you’ve recently found yourself thinking that you might just bite the bullet and buy a new high-end graphics card, news last week that new models from NVIDIA could be coming as soon as July may make you rethink that decision. The day before the 9800GTX was officially unveiled, rumors started to leak that NVIDIA was already preparing a new line-up of high-end cards under the 9900 naming scheme, and that the 9800 series would be discontinued in July. With NVIDIA moving onto the CPU market in the near future, you have to wonder if the strategy will be the same when they continue to battle AMD and the even stronger Intel. If you really sit back and take a look at the big picture, you can see why consoles are so popular these days." 11. Hardware Canucks is pleased to present out review of the PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750W Quad power supply. Quote: On paper it seems like the PC Power & Cooling 750W Quad has everything going for it and unlike many other “good on paper†power supplies, it completely lives up to our expectations and then some. Its voltage regulation is literally second to none, the efficiency it showed in all of our tests gives complete credibility to its 80Plus certification and its ripple suppression was excellent. Without a doubt, PC Power & Cooling has delivered an engineering tour de force which is able to keep up with many other higher-wattage power supplies on the market. 16. Hello fellow editors! Tech ARP ( http://www.techarp.com/ <http://www.techarp.com/>'>http://www.techarp.com/> ) has just posted the x264 HD Benchmark. Quote - The x264 HD Benchmark is the "High Definition version" of the x264 Benchmark which has become a standard CPU benchmark for Tech ARP as well as many other hardware enthusiasts. The new x264 HD Benchmark ups the ante by using a new 720p24 high-definition video clip. Therefore, it will be a great test of the processor's ability to encode HD quality video streams. Give it a try and let us know how your processor fares! Here's a quote from the article :- "Simply put, it is a reproducible measure of fast your machine can encode a short, HD-quality video clip into a high quality x264 video file. It's nice because everyone running it will use the same video clip and software. The video encoder (x264.exe) reports a fairly accurate internal benchmark (in frames per second) for each pass of the video encode and it also uses multi-core processors very efficiently." Background ========== OpenSSH is a complete SSH protocol implementation that includes an SFTP client and server support. Affected packages ================= ------------------------------------------------------------------- Package / Vulnerable / Unaffected ------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 net-misc/openssh < 4.7_p1-r6 >= 4.7_p1-r6 Description =========== Two issues have been discovered in OpenSSH: * Timo Juhani Lindfors discovered that OpenSSH sets the DISPLAY variable in SSH sessions using X11 forwarding even when it cannot bind the X11 server to a local port in all address families (CVE-2008-1483). * OpenSSH will execute the contents of the ".ssh/rc" file even when the "ForceCommand" directive is enabled in the global sshd_config (CVE-2008-1657). Impact ====== A local attacker could exploit the first vulnerability to hijack forwarded X11 sessions of other users and possibly execute code with their privileges, disclose sensitive data or cause a Denial of Service, by binding a local X11 server to a port using only one address family. The second vulnerability might allow local attackers to bypass intended security restrictions and execute commands other than those specified by "ForceCommand" if they are able to write to their home directory. Workaround ========== There is no known workaround at this time. Resolution ========== All OpenSSH users should upgrade to the latest version: # emerge --sync # emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose ">=net-misc/openssh-4.7_p1-r6" References ========== [ 1 ] CVE-2008-1483 http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2008-1483 [ 2 ] CVE-2008-1657 http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2008-1657 Availability ============ This GLSA and any updates to it are available for viewing at the Gentoo Security Website: http://security.gentoo.org/glsa/glsa-200804-03.xml Concerns? ========= Security is a primary focus of Gentoo Linux and ensuring the confidentiality and security of our users machines is of utmost importance to us. 19. Hi all, We have just published a review of Battlefield: Bad Company Beta impressions - if you could post a link on your site that would be very much appreciated.* Link: http://www.bit-tech.net/gaming/2008/04/05/battlefield_bad_company_beta_impressions/1 **Picture: *http://images.bit-tech.net/content_images/2008/04/battlefield_bad_company_beta_impressions/s1.jpg * *Quote: Bearing in mind that /Battlefield: Bad Company/ is just a beta, and we're probably another three months away from release, the game is surprisingly polished. There were a few framerate drops, but only when the action gets really frantic – which it often does thanks to the destructible environments. Likewise, there were a few network dropouts, but EA are still tweaking the servers, so this is to be expected. There are still a few balancing issues to sort out – for example, it takes what seems like an inordinate amount of bullets to kill another player – but I'm sure they'll be sorted out as development progresses. Gold Rush is an interesting twist to the usual multiplayer games too, but I think the big story with /Battlefield: Bad Company/ is going to be the single player storyline. Can a game that has been resolutely multiplayer only since day one really come up with a compelling single player game? You'll have to wait another couple of months to find out. Cheers guys! 20. Hi all, We have just published a review of Lancool Metal Boned K7 - if you could post a link on your site that would be very much appreciated.* Link: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2008/04/04/lancool_metal_boned_k7/1 **Picture: http://images.bit-tech.net/content_images/2008/04/lancool_metal_boned_k7/s00.jpg *Quote: For us, there's a lot to like about the Metal Boned K7 even including the rather unique name, which has somehow managed to grow on us like some sort of all-conquering fungus. Too many times we come across cases which have also tried to go back to basics but which fall down because they don't really understand what the basics are. Thankfully, Lancool do understand the basics and they've demonstrated it here. This is a no nonsense, solidly built case which is perfectly tailored to the needs of its audience. Cheers guys! 21. Hi guys, Nvidia way of branding their mobile GPUs is pretty confusing due to re-branding of older generation GPUs and such. Nevertheless, we tried our best to compile a list of their upcoming GeForce 9M series. GeForce 9800M GTX is the only mobile GPU which is G92 based among the entire GeForce 9M line-up while GeForce 9800M GTS, 9700M GTS are G94 based. Below is a direct quote from the review: "Recently Razer sent over two of their latest products for review, and the first one I'll be taking a look at today is the Piranha Gaming Communicator. 25. Hello Technology News Community, I4U NEWS reviews the Turning Point: Fall of Liberty Video Game for PC. Quote from the review: "The game starts off with a lot of potential and then fails to deliver on the interesting setting for the game. Graphics are horrible, there is no method to bind keyboard commands and the game suffers from an exceptionally frustrating tendency to shutter and stop even on a very high end gaming machine."
