More details about the issues may be found in the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) database: http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2008-1687 http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2008-1688 Here are the details from the Slackware 12.0 ChangeLog: +--------------------------+ patches/packages/m4-1.4.11-i486-1_slack12.0.tgz: Upgraded to m4-1.4.11. In addition to bugfixes and enhancements, this version of m4 also fixes two issues with possible security implications. A minor security fix with the use of "maketemp" and "mkstemp" -- these are now quoted to prevent the (rather unlikely) possibility that an unquoted string could match an existing macro causing operations to be done on the wrong file. Also, a problem with the '-F' option (introduced with version 1.4) could cause a core dump or possibly (with certain file names) the execution of arbitrary code. For more information on these issues, see: http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2008-1687 http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2008-1688 (* Security fix *) +--------------------------+ Where to find the new packages: +-----------------------------+ HINT: Getting slow download speeds from ftp.slackware.com? The developers have made a great game once again, and made there be several modes for either a single player, cooperative, or even deathmatches. On the other hand, even if you haven't played the original, this game still has quite a bit to offer. It isn't totally necessary to know all the events of the original to have fun, but if you plan to play them both, play the first one before the second. Why then, are so many franchises left to die at the side of the road, despite the first game having an original concept or a great fan base? Unfortunately, in most cases it probably boils down to money, but there are many reasons that games just don't get made. 15. Hello everyone, Honeywell ARIUS 22" LCD Monitor " The HWLM2216 is a 22" LCD monitor that uses standard cathode type backlighting. I'm sure we will see an update sooner or later that will include LED lighting instead, but a regular cathode is tried and true technology. They last long enough that you will be buying a new monitor rather than replacing a backlight. Since it is a 22", the resolution is 1680x1050 which is the standard 16x10 resolution found on computer monitors. This resolution is big enough to contain a great deal of information and keep the readability. The top of the monitor also contains the discreet 1.3MP webcam. This is probably the reason that the monitor contains 3 USB ports instead of the more traditional four. The microphone is located on the bottom right. 16. Today, we take a quick detour off our normal path of evaluating PC-only hardware to look at brand new controller making waves in the Playstation universe. The $60 Zero Controller from Nyko is the first rumble and motion sensing controller for the Sony Playstation 3. Released only a few weeks ago, Nyko was the first to market with a controller that vibrates along with having six-direction tilt functionality. Quote: "Unlike the Sony controllers, third party controllers like the Nyko don’t have built-in wireless functionality and thus need wireless adapter. Nyko has packaged a low latency USB adapter for use with the Zero controller that is a very simple to plug in and go. We didn’t notice any lag or delay with this solution at all with using the Zero which was a concern of ours as we realized that there would be a USB adapter in the mix. The Nyko Zero is powered by a NiMH rechargeable battery that in our tests gave more than 20 hours of continuous gaming. Like the original Sony controllers, you can recharge these using the USB mini like you normally would. If you need more playtime, Nyko includes a “AA” battery pack so that you can have uninterrupted p0wnage..." 17. Hi all, We have just published a review of Intel Core 2 Duo E8500, E8400 and E8200 - if you could post a link on your site that would be very much appreciated.* Link: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2008/04/07/intel_core_2_duo_e8500_e8400_and_e8200/1 * *Picture: http://images.bit-tech.net/content_images/2008/04/intel_core_2_duo_e8500_e8400_and_e8200/7x4.jpg *Quote: Just like the QX9650 and QX9770 the 45nm products are the ones to aim for if you're considering and Intel upgrade, however /unlike/ the Extreme Edition CPUs, the Wolfdales are *affordable*. In fact, every CPU featured was affordable, the only exception is the Q6700 at £311. If you're heavily into multi-threaded applications or serious multi-tasking, then a quad-core processor will offer a greater performance and space to breath. If you're a gamer though, a high clocked dual-core with plenty of memory bandwidth is certainly the way to go - the Wolfdales will oblige in every aspect. Cheers guys! Tim Smalley www.bit-tech.net
  18. Hello Everyone, We're writing to let you all know that we have just posted a new article at HotHardware in which we evaluate a somewhat unique Radeon-based graphics card, the Sapphire Radeon HD 3870 512MB Toxic. Unlike most reference 3870 cards, the Sapphire Radeon HD 3870 512MB Toxic differs from ATI's reference design and features higher GPU and memory speeds, a fancy single-slot cooling solution that leverages Microloops' Vapor-X technology, and it has one of the better retail bundles we have seen in quite a while too. Come on by the site and check it out... Article URL: http://www.hothardware.com/Articles/Sapphire_Radeon_HD_3870_512MB_Toxic Site: http://www.hothardware.com/ As always, a link in your news sections would be much appreciated! 19. Hello fellow editors! Tech ARP ( http://www.techarp.com/ <http://www.techarp.com/>'>http://www.techarp.com/> ) has just posted the Missing Resolutions In Crysis. Quote - This is one of those problems whose solutions were always there in front of our eyes. It is also a problem that should never have happened. Perhaps Crytek could have done it in a better way. Certainly, I would be the first to admit that even I fell for it. Okay, what exactly is the problem I'm referring to? Here's a quote from the article :- "A quick search on the Internet revealed that many gamers faced the same problem. The only reason why this was not a much bigger problem is because Crysis is so tough on hardware that most users cannot really use the higher "missing" resolutions." 20. Hi! We got some exclusive information from Kinc and Elmor about their escapades last weekend when they were playing with some brand new hardware from ASUS and Intel. The final result is a new 3DMark 06 world record. The hardware is too new for the ORB though. Link: http://www.nordichardware.com/news,7604.html Quote:" With two ASUS EAH3870X2 TOP, which sports two AMD RV670 circuits on one PCB, they had four graphics cores working together to break the world record. In the end they were able to reach 32,601 points. " Image (1280x1024): http://www.nordichardware.com/image3.php?id=4844 A news post would be most appreciated! NordicHardware Crew

  22. Coolink GFXChilla Review Dear webmaster / news poster: Quote: Coolink has been around for several years now. Their award winning products like the Coolink Silentator and the SWiF fans showed some nice performance over other competitors, although Coolink did not really have very efficient and high-performance GPU coolers. With the recent release of the Coolink GFXChilla, I was itching to give it a try. Overall the performance to price ratio is excellent, not to mention the silent operational fans that leave your computer system silent at all loads. Take a look at how well it performs to the standard manufacturers stock cooling.
