    WindowsXP on an e-Machine

I just tested it out on an SP2 machine and it installed just fine. I'd suggest running a disk cleanup, cleaning out your temporary internet files and setup files. Then re-try the download/installation. If that still doesn't work, try upgrading to SP3 and run the installation, unless you have your reasons for not upgrading to SP3. Honestly, we're just about to upgrade all clients to SP3 due to issues with SP3 and Dynamics.

    Video Card Problem

500 watts seems like it should be enough with what you've described, as it looks like that model only needs 300-350 watts. But if you're having problems with other decives not functioning, that might be it. Before you go off and buy a new PSU, you might just want to retry doing it all. Try installing the onboard video, switch to using that one, disable the video card, remove it from the Device Manager, remove it from your machine, and start from scratch. Yeah, it's a bit of a pain, but at least you get a chance to fully retrace all steps through the process. Also make sure that you have the most up-to-date drivers from the manufacturer's web site. Also update your BIOS; not sure if that would help, but you'll be able to scratch that off your list. Worst case scenario, you could try to use a PSU with more power. Check out dealnews.com for PSUs. They post the biggest sales out there. I know NewEgg.com (Feb. Sales) is having good February sales, which includes PSUs.
  4. You could always revert back to the standard theme and change individual items through the display properties. As for only changing the cursor itself, I'm not sure about how to do that.
  5. It's called your cursor.
  6. Try this out (it works for flash drives): Plug in the device and open up the Device Manager. Expand the USB section and uninstall the device from the listing. After that is done, unplug the device from your machine, then plug it back in. Your OS should install the device so that it's working again. You may need to do this with any USB device that is experiencing this. If that doesn't work, there is a chance that you fried your USB ports.

    IE7 and YouTube issues

We recently upgraded all clients in our domain to IE7. Since then, users cannot view YouTube properly. Firefox works, but I don't want users using Firefox; one more application that I don't need to continuously monitor security updates with. Viewing YouTube the first time works fine, but as soon as you visit another link, it looks all sorts of crazy, almost like plain text and everything is aligned on the right. It also shows the infamous message: "Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player." Flash Player is up to date and JavaScript is enabled. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Flash, but to no avail. I've tried all the suggestions that I've found, but it won't work. Clearing the temporary internet files work, but only once and then you'll have to clear the cache for everytime you want to view a YouTube video. If a machine is outside of our domain, YouTube operates normally. I've looked through settings and can't find a resolution. This isn't a huge deal, but it's annoying the hell out of me, and users are starting to complain more and more to me about it, which just plain aggrevates me; when they're happy, I'm happy. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Generic USB Key Not Recognized

When you say that it isn't recognized, are you receiving a message that says that? Or is it that the drivers get installed, but it doesn't show up as a drive? If it's the latter, then here's a solution I've found to work with USB keys having this issue. Plug the key in, open up Device Manager, expand the USB section, right-click USB Mass Storage and select Uninstall. After that completes, unplug the key and plug it back in. This usually works for me. I've also seen a problem if mapped network drives take up the drive that the key was originally assigned to. For instance, the key used to be drive E:, but then a network folder was mapped to drive E:, so the key would not show up as a drive, although it was recognized.

    advanced bios help

Usually when you try to exit BIOS, it will ask if you want to save settings. Select "Exit without saving changes." Is your computer functioning properly since the accident? If something else happened to your hard drive (HDD) and the OS is damaged, you can copy those files to another HDD by making the new one your primary and the old one your slave. Check the sides of the HDDs for the jumper settings; they're usually printed on the top or bottom. It may take a few tries to get it right, so don't get too frustrated. You may just need to perform an OS repair using the installation disk.

Sometimes those sites work, but I would recommend staying away from them. They usually require you to pay for a service and occassionally throw spyware onto your machine. Just avoid them. And don't worry about asking "too much." If you don't know, how else are you going to find out? I'm suprised Symantec does not have a removal tool for this one, because a lot of people don't feel comfortable screwing with the registry. Take Relic's advice of trying to repair Windows using the installation CD. I'd hold off on formatting and reinstalling until it's a last resort; he's right that this will definitely get rid of any problems you're having, though. Reinstallation is just a big pain and I try to avoid it if I can. If you're out of options, save what data you can and format. NOTE: By formatting your hard drive, you willl be permanently erasing all data on your system. You will not be able to recover anything from the hard drive after you have formatted it. And, yes, it really was my birthday.

Well, that's one way of doing it, although you miss out on all the fun of dealing with hardware.

    Weird power pulsing problem

That's mostl likely it. In the unlikely event that you have two faulty power supplies, test one of them out on a spare machine.

You should be able to get another copy of the disc from Toshiba, for a price.

    Weird power pulsing problem

Take a look at the motherboard and see if any of the capacitors are blown. They will look either popped up a bit or be oozing if they are indeed blown. If this is the case, your motherboard is fried.

If you feel comfortable with editing the registry, you might want to take a look at these instructions: http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2005-042316-2917-99&tabid=3 I'm not positive that this is the same threat, but it's woth a shot. Before you do anything, make sure that you backup the registry first, in case you accidentally mess up (it happens, trust me). To do so, while in the registry, right-click on "My Computer" and select "Export." Save this file somewhere where you'll remember it. Edit: By the way, happy birthday. It's mine, too.

    media player version 9

When selecting all of the media files you wish to play in order, select the last track first, hold shift, and select the first track. This is assuming that you just want to play an album, not select individual files. Of course, you could add the files and then have Media Player sort them according to file name.
  18. I've been experiencing something rather odd with the HP Color LaserJet 2600n printers on our network, lately. Ocassionaly, they don't print out Excel files. All other applications print the jobs just fine, but not Excel. Our Workaround: 1) Restart the computer; or 2) Print an Excel file to another printer, then print back to the 2600n printer. Either of these two solutions resolve the issue, but I would like to keep this from happening, as it does tend to be rather annoying to deal with. Does anyone have any information regarding this scenario which could help me out? As usual, the HP support site proves to be, well, useless. Thanks in advance.
  19. Luckily for us, the problem is not an issue anymore. We upgraded to Office 2007 about a year ago, and also upgraded machines, so I haven't heard anything from the users. Then again, I pinned the batch file which restarts the print spooler to their Start menu in case they need it. The machine upgrade might have fixed the issue if it was indeed memory related. It's interesting that you bring up the 4200 printer, because the macros we use in Word, which were brought up earlier, dealt with an HPLJ 4250. I wonder if that's just a coincidence. jm7sa, have you tried restarting the printer spooler service to see if that helps? I'll go through my notes and see if I can pull up any addition information for you, but it was almost 2 years ago and it could take some time finding. Sorry for not being of better help.

    Outlook freezes accessing global Contacts

I've been working on this machine for hours without any progress. System Restores only cause more issues, but at least I can cross that off my list. I ran Office Diagnostics, but it said nothing was detected as an issue. Upon opening up Outlook and attempting to create a new message, the same problem happened when clicking the To... box. This time, I had the volume turned on and heard low-tuned dings when clicking on the Outlook windows. Minimizing won't be allowed, but opening up another window (say, IE) and minimizing it doesn't affect the display of the Outlook windows, which shows that Outlook isn't really frozen. Thinking that maybe there is a dialogue box open that I just couldn't see (alt + tab did nothing), I hit Alt + F4 and Outlook started responding again. Clicking the To... box brought up the global contacts. I have no idea what happened or why it started, but it looks like it's functioning normally again. I still would very much like to know what did this to the machine. If I find anything, I'll keep you all posted.

    Starcraft problem.

Try seeing if you can run it in compatibility mode. Right-click on the StarCraft icon and select properties. There's a tab for Compatibility where you can select another system, like Windows 98/ME (recommended, since that was what OS the game was originally designed for).

    TryingToHelp

Try running the virus scan in safe mode (not with networking). In fact, unplug the system from the network and run the scan. Make sure that the definition files are up-to-date, otherwise you are going to miss some of the newer viruses out there.
  25. I apologize in advance if I misunderstood you. I do not quite understand your question. From the title of this post, it looks like you want addresses from your address book to display the exact same in the TO section of an email. To do this, open up the contact in the Outlook and change the "Display As" section. You can make it whatever you want to to be. If I am wrong in my understanding of your question, let me know and I will do what I can to help.
