  1. I am also VERY impressed with Suse9.3 pro, and am looking forward to the next release. I am sure I have plenty of HD space (160Gig), but have never had any success with more than 2 operating systems on a drive at any given time (win & linux). Right now, Suse is using only about 4 of 80 gig, or 5%, so space is not an issue, my limited ability is (I am no spring chicken either, zenarcher :-) ). Once I tried to have win98,FC3, and Simply Mepis on the same drive, and Fc3 wouldn't boot, so my only experience with multiple linux systems on the same drive has not been good! Justbill
  2. I installed SUSE9.3 over the weekend. So far My family is really happy with it! We switched from FC4. Personally, I think the install was a breeze! I did have to configure the printer (a HP psc 1315) after the install, and the soundcard (FC4 auto detected everything), but that was really no big deal! I haven't tried to scan anything yet so I don't know if that is working or not. I do really like the updater, it will automatically delete source packages after an update, something I never quite got (how to do), in FC4. All in all, i am very happy with this distro, so far. 45 minutes after I put disc-1 (5 disc set) in, I was using my computer, and exploring SUSE9.3 , the install was very quick, and painless :-). My son did try to play a game, that didn't work well for him, something about 3-D graphics wasn't suppported. I'll have to check that out at some point, this machine has onboard graphics, Perhaps I need a NVIDIA card instead. All in all, this distro is very nice, and is one my wife and kids (and myself as well) can use with no problem! linspire

I almost put linspire on this box, I got a bug to try something different, after having some small problems with FC4. I ended up trying Suse9.3 pro. Just got it installed this afternoon, so I haven't had time to see if I like it yet (do they have a forum ?), but may end up trying Linspire, if Suse doesn't do for us what we want. Justbill

    /etc/hosts problem

Not long ago, I ran some live cd's. One was Beatrix, and the other DSL. After running these cd's, I get a message when I log in "could not look up internet address for box. This will prevent GNOME from operating correctly. It may be possible to correctthe problem by adding Box to the file /etc/hosts" . Log in Anyway - Try Again that was after running DSL, after Beatrix, just replace the word "box" with "Beatrix" I have to click "Log in Anyway" to get in. When I open a terminal it says [bill@box ~]$ When it used to say (before these live cd's) [bill@localhost68 ~]$ I have run "Puppy Linux" without this problem. Both of the other cd's (DSL and Beatrix) seem to be based on the Knoppix kernel and they are the ones that have caused me this problem. Can anyone offer a suggestion on how to correct this problem, short of reinstalling FC4. Thanks Justbill Windows XP & Fedora Core 4 on a Compaq Presario SR1426NX 2.93GHz Pentium 4 Processor 515J 160GB 7200RPM Serial ATA hard drive 512MB PC2-3200 DDR2 SDRAM

    DSL on Lexar Jumpdrive

Hi all! I am attempting to install DSL on a Lexar Jumpdrive. I have run the live cd, went thru the menu to the point of the shell opening, and it asks the location (example sda ). In Fedora, when the Jumpdrive is mounted, it is sdf1, on this system (I looked in the "hardware browser"). I tried sdf1 on the dsl live cd, and that was no good. Does anyone know how, when running the live cd (DSL), I can find out the location of the Jumpdrive? Again, the example would be sda, sdb, ??? Thanks in advance Justbill

    DSL on Lexar Jumpdrive

The fdisk -l command did work, but the install to the jumpdrive of dsl did not. I did however, after formating the jumpdrive to fat32, install Puppy Linux on it. Justbill

    qn about partitioning

Personally, I also use Partition Magic. I used to resize my NTFS partition, and then used Fedora to create my swap, and Ext3. Justbill

    Minor irritation

I am dual booting winXP and Fedora Core4. This afternoon, I took a notion to run a live cd (Beatrix) for a little while just to play with it, and maybe install it to a jump drive. After playing with Beatrix for a little while, I took out the disc, and rebooted the machine into FC4. When I logged in I got this error message: "Could not look up internet address for Beatrix. This will prevent GNOME from operating correctly. It may be possible to correct the problem by adding Beatrix to the file /etc/host Log in Anyway - Try Again" Obviously, I click "Log in Anyway", and go about my buisiness in FC4. However, when I open a terminal, the prompt reads like this: [bill@Beatrix ~]$ instead of [bill@localhost68 ~]$ Like I said, this is a minor irritation. However I would like to correct it if I could. Does anyone have any suggestions what I might try to fix this? Thanks Justbill

    Burning pictures

Is it possible to burn pictures (photo's) to a disc that can be played back on a DVD player on a television? I am using FC4, I have K3b as one option as my burning tool. I tried this once, and burned the pictures as a DVD data project, and the DVD player said the disc didn't have playback feature. Thanks Justbill

    Trying to install Qcad

Duh, that was kind of a dumb question! I typed before I thought! I got it where I wanted it! thanks to all thaat helped with this! My next project will be burnning Qcad to a cd and installing it on a machine that is not connected to the internet. He is running CentOs 4.1, I wonder if I will have to download compat-libstdc++-33-3.2.3-47.fc4.i386.rpm, for qcad to work on CentoS 4.1 ( obviously it would be the version for CentOs, if it needs it). Thanks Again Justbill

    Trying to install Qcad

Well I got to play with Qcad a little, it was quite a project getting to it, Here is what I had to do to get there: [bill@68 ~]$ cd qcad-2.0.4.8-1-demo.linux90.x86.tar.gz_FILES [bill@68 qcad-2.0.4.8-1-demo.linux90.x86.tar.gz_FILES]$ ls qcad-2.0.4.8-1-demo.linux90.x86 [bill@68 qcad-2.0.4.8-1-demo.linux90.x86.tar.gz_FILES]$ cd qcad_2.0.4.8-1-demo.linux90.x86 bash: cd: qcad_2.0.4.8-1-demo.linux90.x86: No such file or directory [bill@68 qcad-2.0.4.8-1-demo.linux90.x86.tar.gz_FILES]$ ./qcad_demo bash: ./qcad_demo: No such file or directory [bill@68 qcad-2.0.4.8-1-demo.linux90.x86.tar.gz_FILES]$ cd qcad-2.0.4.8-1-demo.linux90.x86 [bill@68 qcad-2.0.4.8-1-demo.linux90.x86]$ ls bin doc examples fonts library patterns qcad_demo qm README scripts [bill@68 qcad-2.0.4.8-1-demo.linux90.x86]$ ./qcad_demo I was kind of hoping this would install in such a way like "Kover" did, in accessories. Is it possible? Justbill
