    Installation Problems on HP Pavilion

OK, I am going to dis-able my sound so I can't hear the I "Told You So's" Thanks for all the help guys! I ended up puting a new cd-rw dvdrom drive in, and all works great! I got a LiteOn cd-rw dvd rom, and stuck that in there and it has solved all my problems. My free computer is starting to run into a few bucks here Between the new cd-rw dvd rom , ethernet card, and 128MB of ram, free aint looking quite as cheap as it did at first. O well, it will make a nice little box for playing around on..... It is a HP Pavilion 6630 500 MHz Celeron processor 192MB SDRAM 10GB Maxtron hard drive dual booting Win 98 & Vector SOHO 5.0 Thanks for all the help guys Justbill

    Installation Problems on HP Pavilion

Well, it looks like I've met with some success here! As I said earlier, I pulled (earlier it may have been I intend to pull) Maxtron hard drive out of the Pavilion, and put it in the Vectra. I did make sure to put it on the first IDE, and on master. I did successfully install Beatrix, and Vector SOHO 5.0 (at different times) to the drive (the Maxtron). My next attempt (going on as we speak), is to have a dual booting drive (OK I am nuts), win98 and Vector 5.1 . I went with Vector 5.1 because of its relatively small size. Vector is installing now, almost done as a matter of fact. It appears that the issue was probably the cdrom in the Pavilion, because I have been able to install systms on the Maxtron, with it in a different machine. Incidently, The Mad Dog is a Dominator 4 in 1 CD-RW DVDrom (it will burn cd's and read dvd's). I will check back tomorrow and let you all know how this fiasco went. Thanks for all the help Justbill

    How do I Remove?

I just downloaded and installed the most recent kernel for FC4. I now have 4 kernels in my grub menu, and in my computer as well. Now , going with the philosophy that "if 1 is good, 2 MUST be better" , 4 seems a little exessive! Could someone explain to me how to find and remove these "extra" kernels that I have, but most likely really don't need. This is the one thing I really liked about SuSE, it automatically removed source packages after an update. I am using yum for my updater, up2date just didn't work real well for me. Many Thanks Justbill

    Installation Problems on HP Pavilion

Thanks guys! I bumped the ram up to 192mb. Stil, nothing would work. Now it gets weirder. I put a Mad Dog 4 in 1 Dominator in the Pavilion, that I had in a Vectra. With the BIOS set to boot from cdrom first, and nothing. Now when the machine booted into win98, win98 saw the Dominator, however, the BIOS did not! In set up, on IDE 2 master, it said none. When I put the originall cdrom back in, it saw it fine. I even "flashed" the Dominator, with the flash tool from Mad Dog website. Currently I am loading Ubuntu on the 10 GB hard drive from the Pavilion, in the Vectra (took the HD out of the Pavilion and put it in the Vectra), hopefully this will work. I may still try to get a cd rom and perhaps a burner for the Pavilion, but I hate to waste the money on it if the Pavilion wil only recognize the cd rom that it had in it originally. Maybe a Sony would be more compatible with this older machine. What do you think? Thanks Justbill P.S. I don't think interupted downloads are an issue here, as I am on broadband, 3meg service. My average download speed is about 350 kb/sec.

    Installation Problems on HP Pavilion

Thanks for the idea on that danleff. I will probably get a new cdrom drive for that. I'm just wondering though, the win98 disc, is a burned copy, I don't know what speed it was burned at though. Justbill P.S. When I tried to install FC3, that was a publishers disc set (the discs came with a book on FC3), so they were not burned at home. [Edited by Justbill on 2005-10-18 13:34:09]

    apt4suse

I just downloaded apt4suse (yast hasn't impressed me much!) and ran it. It seems to have run fine and without problem. I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with apt4suse, and what there opinion of it was? Justbill P.S Can someone PLEASE tell me how to insert a link in a post on this site

    Programming Apps.

My son is beginning to study c++ language. My question would be, what programs is he going to be needing, and or using on my computer to be working with this? About a week ago, I downloaded something call Qt. I've got Qt Assistant, Qt Designer, and Qt Linguist. I'm just guessing that this is what he may be needing. Can anyone tell me what I may need to get for him, or what I may already have on my machine that he will be using, learning to write programs, and run them. We have SuSE 9.3 on this box currently, and will probably be upgrading to 10.0 after its release on 10-6. Thanks much Justbill dual booting Win XP & SuSE 9.3 Compaq Presario SR1426NX 2.93Ghz Pentium 4 Processor 512MB PC2-3200 DDR2 SDRAM 160GB 7200RPM Serial ATA hard drive
  9. I've been downloading some games for my kids. Some of them are tar.gz files, how do I get the game to install in SuSE 9.3? I would like to make the games available system wide. RPM files are easy, I just open a terminal and su yast2 -i <filename>.rpm and its done! but these aren't rpm's, and I don't know what to do with them. Any help is greatly appreciated Thanks Justbill

  13. A friend of mine has a DTK computer. He wants to dual boot WinXP and SuSE 9.3. I have repeatedly attempted to install XP on this box, to no avail! It seems to format and copy the files alright, but when it reboobts, we get an "error loading operating system" message. On one of the install attempts I entered an install for setting up "SCSI or RAID" and was prompted to insert "manufacturers install disc" . I don't have this disc (and neither does my friend) so I dropped in a blank floppy, in the hopes that the machine would further tell me what it wants, and it did (I think). I got a message that the "txtsetup.oem" files could not be found. I'm just guessing, but I'm thinking I need those! So my question is, if that is what I need, does anyone know where I might be able to download them from ( I tried DTK site, and got nowhere), and can I download them on my SuSE 9.3 box, burn them to a cd, and transfer them to floppy on another machine (my machine has no floppy drive)? I did install Fedora Core 4 successfully on this machine and it boots fine! And I tried to install Win98 on it and that wouldn't install either. Score = Linux 1, M$ Windows 0. :-) . This computer has a PRM-92V EO motherboard , 256mb ram , 533mhz Pentium III processor, and a 60gig hardrive. If anyone has any thoughts on this (other than the trash can) they would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Justbill

Problem installing OS on DTK computer

That DTK website is kind of a joke. I got redirected to the VIA website, and the best guess I could find is the "Hyperion Pro" download. I looked in it after it downloaded, and it does have the "txtsetup.oem" file so I'll give it a whirl. The download was a little over 6mb so I obviously wont get it all on a floppy. I suppose I'll put it on severall floppy's a little at a time. I'll be giving it a try tomorrow, as this computer is at work. Thanks Justbill

    SuSe won't import pisctures?

I am currently running (but not for long, if this don't change!) SuSe 9.3. I have a Kodak CX4310 digital camera. When I was using Fedora Core 3 or 4, or Centos, or Mandriva, these OS's auto detected my camera, and imported pictures effortlessly. This SuSe 9.3 see's the camera, but won't import the pictures. Can anyone give me a clue as to how to get this working? I am using the Gnome desktop. Thanks in advance Justbill

    XP won't boot

A buddy of mine has a TDK computer. I really know very little about this machine, other than, it has a 533 Mhz Pentium III , and 256 mb ram. We have installed Windows XP severall times, and the OS is there, but, the machine won't boot the OS, I know this because I can see the partition, and the files when RUNNING a linux live cd (Beatrix), and I succesfully installed and ran Fedora Core 4 on this machine, it would boot fine! I used FC4 to look at the drive and make some partition changes, and then tried to install XP again, and let XP have the entire disk (60 gig). I'm only guessing here, but could this be a 64 bit machine? and are windows products incompatible with it ( windows 98 would install but not boot also)? Am I missing something in the install? I Googled TDK, and got a lot of electronics products, but no TDK computer info. So far I have installed 2 Linux different Linux distrobutions on this machine, with no problems at all, and ran 3 different live cd's on it. But it just refuses to boot Windows 98 or XP, when I install them. I am attempting these installs as stand alone installs ( I'm not trying to dual boot until after WinXP install is succesfull). I did run a media wiper on this machine at one point, and after it searched for drives it did come back with "no Hysical drives found" , whats up with that? Any Help on this would be appreciated!!! Thanks in Advance Justbill

    XP won't boot

We did try to boot off XP cd, and never could get to the OS. I will try again tomorrow ( the machine is at work). On my new computer (Compaq Presario SR1426NX) XP came pre- installed on the NTFS file system, and I am dual booting (typing this while in SuSe 9.3 pro ) with no issue's. Thanks Justbill P.S. Thanks for the link! I printed the info and I'm sure it will help [Edited by Justbill on 2005-09-22 19:13:29]

Soooooooo, I downloaded the RPM for f-prot, right clicked on the rpm icon in my home folder, and clicked Open with Yast, and, and, and, and,,,,,,,,,,,Nothin! And yes I did chmod a+x. What, pray tell am I doing wrong here? I had the same issue last week trying to install the game maelstrom. Whats up with that? This is the only thing I am unhappy with on this OS (SuSe9.3). Can't seem to install stuff easily Justbill

Setting Up Damn Small Linux On USB Pen Drive

Hi zenarcher! You said earlier that Suse 9.3 see's your jumpdrive. Have you tried to put anything in the jumpdrive from suse yet? I tried, and suse told me the drive was full. I had nothing on the drive, and I was wondering if you had run into this problem? I think, on mine, its recognizing the jumpdrive, but won't put anything on the fat32 partition. I don't know. I can put things on the jumpdrive using win XP, but suse won't let me. Mine is a 256Mb jumpdrive. Justbill

    Lets get My Scanner Working

I have a HP 1315 psc, I have tried to get it going using "Kooka", in FC4. So far.....nothing, and I'm puzzled as to how to get it going! The printer works great! FC4 detected the printer, and had a driver for it. Kooka will open, but that is as far as it goes. I can't import an image, it does nothing when I click "select scan device". Any thoughts? Thanks Justbill

    Lets get My Scanner Working

Hi guys! I am also REALLY looking forward to SUSE 10.0! I'm hoping that a few things will be different in 10.0. Like the situation with the scanner driver. Also, the other day I tried to install the game "maelstrom", which installed with no problem in FC4, but I had no luck with SUSE 9.3. I downloaded the RPM, right clicked on it, and selected "open with Yast" and nothing happened. I then opened a shell, and chmod a+x , and tried ./maelstrom.whateveritwas.rpm.bin and nothing. So with the permissions changed, I tried "open with Yast" again, and still nothing. Stuff like this is what I hope works a little better. I am considering, if they offer 10.0 as a purchase online to buy it instead of just downloading the free version, my hope is to be able to get some support from Novell, and that there will be a little more in the "for sale" version. That would be a truly different experience for me, if EVERYTHING just worked from the get go. Justbill

    Lets get My Scanner Working

WOW! What a read! Thanks for the info, I think I may just wait for SUSE10.0 final to come out, and see if it just works with that. Right now, my printer works fine, I just can't scan. As confusing as that read was for me, I'm concerned I will mess up and lose my abillity to print. I think it was telling me , I need to uninstall the hpaio driver, and install the new hplip driver. Oh well, I think I'm gonna just live with it the way it is (OK call me a coward). Justbill

    Lets get My Scanner Working

Hello! No luck with the scanner yet! I tried ptal-init setup, and it looked like it worked, but still, no scanner! My printer has been working with the hpaio driver, do I need to un-install that driver before I try to install the hpoj driver? Thanks Justbill

    Internet History

Hi all, I need to find out if there is a way to check where my kid has been going on the internet. He has figured out how to delete his history , by clicking on Go>History, then the drop down box opens, and he highlights and deletes his trail! Is there a way I can check on this elsewhere in the system? Maybe in a terminal? When he highlights and deletes, does that eliminate all trace of where he has been? He had been going to some nude pics sites and some [censored], I told him if he did it anymore, he would not be using the computer anymore. But I don't want to push that on suspition, rather than proof! I am running fc4, and we are using mozilla. Thanks in advance Justbill
