WinXP SPII ftdisk 49 in Event Log

ftdisk stands for Fault tolerance disk driver (ftdisk.sys). Set the page file to system managed as it sounds like it is too small.

    I dread a clean install

Boot to the XP cd and try a repair install as it will enumerate Plug and Play devices again which will include a new hardware abstraction layer (HAL). The HAL is most likely why you are getting a blue screen.
  4. I have no idea as I use Eudora.
  5. I wonder if the reset button in maintenance resets counter.

    Virus Help!

Free are not as good as pay IMO. This Comparative ranks AVG 28th with it only catching about 50% of the test viruses and that was the Pro version which is better then the free one. In AV-Comparatives tests AVG comes in last of the ones they tested.
  9. If this drive was a boot drive in another system that had a different chipset then what it is in now you will have to try a repair install. This will reinstall Windows but all your programs and personal files will remain unharmed. Normally when you put a drive in a system with different chipset (VIA to Nvidia, SIS to Via, etc.) it is best to do a fresh install of the operating system. Reason is the hardware is different. Repair Install of XP

    Antivirus question

If nothing else ever flagged these things then they could be false positives and if this is the case then Avira is not as good as you thought.

MS Word 2003, Smiley Autocompletion Weirdness

If nothing else you can do a search for the file Normal.dot and delete it. The next time you start Word it will create the normal.dot file again but everything will be set back to defaults. Normally on XP this file should be at: driveletter:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

    60+ processes running

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [OpwareSE2] "C:\Program Files\ScanSoft\OmniPageSE2.0\OpwareSE2.exe" This one is just for Omnipage unattended scheduled scanning and if you have a flatbed scanner there is no way you could do unattended scanning anyway. I suppose you could but it would just scan the same page over and over. I always remove this after installing Omnipage.

I scan from desktop, check log then delete the Hijackthis executable. FDLxStudios: Log looks clean to me. [Edited by American Zombie on 2005-11-23 05:11:53]

If so to do that you push R after setup detects the Windows install.

How do you get a replacement serial number? If you have lost or misplaced your serial number you may submit a request to be issued a new serial number.

    agp4X and agp8x

Download then run CPU-Z. Look on the mainboard tab to see what board you have and the maximum AGP it supports.

    DirectX 9.0c versus DirectX 8.1

Going to DX 9 should not make any difference in games you can play so I think it is something else. Anyway.... 1. Would have to know what he installed but the full installer is HERE. 2. Yes there is with DirectX Happy Uninstall. 3. No you can not do that. I would try reinstalling video card drivers before messing with DirectX. If you update to SP2 it includes DX9 as well as lots of compatibility fixes for games.
