  1. Update - I think I've gotten in over my head. Whew - too much for my brain and limited time. I got all confused - the source code got all messed up - I've had to start over several times. Its good though, because I am learning plenty of new things. Still - I think I'm going to need some actual programming knowledge for me to complete this project. So I'm currently trying to teach myself C Programming. I just made a stellar huge giganticly awsome program that prints HELLO WORLD! - Its so cool. Ok - I'm a bit further than that, but getting confused by octal numbers... weird stuff to me. Anyways, I'm still working on this, but its gonna take some time. Thanks for all the advice everyone - its been most helpful.

    WIndows Or Mac?

ds3circuit is Probabily right. At this point benchmarks and things like that don't matter that much. As for pros and cons though I can't really think of any pro's fr the MAC except appearance. They look friggin awsome. Makes me want one just to look at. Good luck with all your choices!

    WIndows Or Mac?

I hate to disagree with the masses here, but I'd suggest a PC instead of a mac. While I think Mac computers look awsome, and have a wonderful operating system there are a few things that always push me to the PC side of things. 1st. Price. Hands down. Mac's are Expensive. Its partially because they use very high quality parts - and probabily partly because they have a little apple logo on them. PC's can be obtained cheaper and easier in a greater selection than a MAC. 2nd Performance (I can't wait to get flamed on this one). Sadly even in apples own benchmarks, a dual 3.2 ghz G5 gets slammed to the curb by both Intel and AMD single processor machines running the same clock speed. Especially in 3d which is surprising considering graphics was an area where Apple had always had the upper hand over pc's. On paper, an Apple machine looks very powerful. In the real world their performance has been lagging behind the market. Its probabily not that the machines are inferior, just that software isn't taking advantage of it the way PC software uses AMD and Intels special instructions to get better performance. Still, with identical video cards and a faster hard drive, the G5 proved almost 40 percent slower on average in 3d tests. PC magazine had one test which apple's G5 was nearly 120% slower. There is no software enhancements which would account for that large of a disparity, even in just one of many tests. Apple pulled their "Fastest Desktop on the Planet" Advertising campaign in light of the benchmarks that they themselves funded. Another problem is that OSX is a resource hog. Putting PPC linux on a new Apple could yeild a large performance gain, but I am not sure about that. Even AppleQuicktime barely outperformed the PC, and it is optimized for the Apple. You will get more for your money if you purchase a PC. There is more software readily availiable, and if you get the urge to play some games in school, you'll be ready for whatever game you want. - So Long and Thanks for All the Fish. P.S. AMD Athlon 64 FX = Awsome! Look into a machine with one - or better yet - build one yourself.

    connecting to a windows network

Assuming you have samba installed correctly and have a graphical interface such as KDE or GNOME then there is a much easier way. All you need is a program like LinNeighborhood or SMB4K. Installing these are easy and you seem pretty sharp (i've read your posts before) so I won't go into their installation in detail. Anyhoo - both of these programs allow you to mount a windows share on your linux box just like a regular hard drive. All you have to to in windows is make sure that the folder its in is shared on the network which you can do by right clicking on the folder and selecting the tab that is labeled sharing. Then click the check box that allows network sharing. (Warning - you have to have every folder up to that folder shared to browse to it - i.e. Say your mp3s are in c:\Documents and Settings\Music\MP3s YOu have to have sharing enabled for the Documents and settings folder, the Music folder, and the MP3s folder. ) Anyways - LinNeighborhood allow network browsing in a graphical environment. Simply browse to the share as you would in windows - then mount it - these programs are easy to use - you should have no trouble. Once it is mounted you can copy your files in via drag and drop like usual. - So Long and Thanks for All the Fish.

    No sound on Mandrake 10

I apologize - I didn't read your post thoroughly enough the first time - I failed to notice you were using onboard sound. Sorry - try the second and third suggestions. Good Luck! - So Long and Thanks for all the Fish

    No sound on Mandrake 10

Two things: 1.) Do you have an onboard soundcard and a pci soundcard? If you have both sometimes there are irq conficts to deal with. If this is the case try to disable the onboard sound in your bios. Then run from the command line: alsaconf - and let it search for your sound card. Then afterwards try running any mixerprogram such as kmix to turn up the volume. 2.) Try running alsaconf even if you don't have a onboard soundcard and a pci soundcard. If it finds no legacy cards have it probe using all possible combinations of irq's - that is one of the options you will run into while running alsaconf. It will take some time but that usually detects anything unconventional. 3.) Google search for your soundcard to see if there is a linux driver available for it and follow its instructions for installation. Good luck!
  8. I had a similar problem with yoper linux and with SuSE Linux. The solution that worked for me was to download the source for alsa and compile it under my newer kernel. I had to have my kernel-source for the compile, but I don't know if that has anything to do with my distro or not since I didn't find anywhere that it was required. Hope you get it all working! Good Luck
  9. Yea - I think I even have a free gift card to barns and noble. Thanks for the info - I get paid this thursday, so if I can't find my gift card I'll pick it up then. Man this has sure been a learning curve - I'm learning more than I ever thought I would - (or cared to know about directplay).
  10. Well, I successfully merged my work computer over to linux. I'm running the latest release from YOPER. I am able to connect to the windows network in my workplace and browse shares. THe only problem is that the windows boxes cannot see me on the network. I'm not too expirenced with samba, so I don't know what I am doing wrong. My computer is a PII Compaq Armada with 256 ram. The server is a dell P4 running windows 2000 server edition.
  11. Hehe - any hopes of getting the book at a bookstore? I'd pick it up tonight if there is - maybe microcenter..... If not I guess I'll order it online. Thanks for the link! Much appriciated. All the information has been a great help to me!
  12. One more question - as I work on making changes to the source code, will I have to do anything to the make file? If so - are there are any resources I can read that would give me information on creating and editing a makefile? Anyhoo - thanks for all the help! - So Long and Thanks for all the Fish
  13. More expensive? I run 5 computers in my basement on my network in addition to my server. I don't even want to think about how much it would have cost me if I had used windows. Just the operating system cost would have been nearly 1000 dollars, plus all software I would need to get - when they already have a free linux conterpart photoshop - gimp microsoft office - open office I prefer gimp and openoffice over their expensive counterparts anyways. I find them more intuative to use and of a generally higher quality - plus no need to pay for the latest version. I can stay up to date to the day, and not shell out anything other than the few donations I make to projects I feel are important to the linux community. ITs absurd to think if Microsoft as a cheaper alternative to linux - especially in server deployyment. Down time costs money - and if you choose microsoft - you will have plenty of down time - So Long and Thanks for all the Fish
  14. Thanks for all the help. Its been quite a learning curve for me, but I think I'm beginning to get a basic understanding of the difference between IP Tables and IP chains. The only difficulty is duplicating thier functions on one another. But the info is out there, and I've figured a few of them out. I don't get compile errors now until a few lines lower, so maybe I'm on the right track.
  15. I got started checking out the source code last night, and it starting to make sense to some degree - are there any places I can go to look up some good documentation on the newer ip tables? I'm also now interested in whether or not the 2.6 kernel made more changes - that is - if I port this to 2.4 will it work with 2.6?

    Kernel 2.6.8.1 & Reiserfs

I did a little expirementing. I installed yopers latest release on my old PII laptop (which it runs surprisingly well). I used a reiser fs - I don't know what reiser I was using though I know I did use cfdisk for partitioning. I tried a variety of kernels (vanilla, and from yopers own) and the only one that seemed a problem was the reiser + vanilla 2.6.8.1 kernel - yopers latest kernels had no problem - but as of my expirements they had not posted a yoperized 2.6.8.1 kernel to check. The errors I got were "drive seek complete error sector something er another..." over and over again on boot - is this the problem that the other people were having?? -So Long and Thanks for all The Fish
  17. martouf is correct - I posted the commands in the wrong order. - this may help clear things up (I also left out an important command). First of all if you just switched to a 2.6 kernel (just in case you did ) it may be helpful to type at the command line : $ modprobe yenya_socket I needed this when I switched - because for some reason the pcmcia card services were not being activated at startup - this successfully activated them. then type $ niswrapper -M This just does some automatic stuff in ndiswrapper - I don't know what it does exactly because mine seemed fine without it, but ndiswrapper says its needed so I always include it. next $ ifconfig wlan0 up this activates the card as the systems networking device next $ iwconfig wlan0 essid any substitute any with your essid if you are using some sort of encryption on you wireless connection. $ dhcpcd wlan0& followed by $ dhcpcd wlan0 This obtains your ip address from the dhcpcd server. You can roll it all into a script like this (if you want to use this just copy and paste it into a blank text document and save it as something like wlancfg. Then edit it to be executible - in kde you can actually just right click on the files icon and go to permissions and set it to executible.) - be sure you are logged in as root to do this. start copy on the next line of text echo "Welcome to the wlan0 configuration utility" echo "Inserting ndiswrapper module....." modprobe yenta_socket modprobe ndiswrapper echo "Activating wireless card as network device...." ifconfig wlan0 up echo "Setting essid..." iwconfig wlan0 essid any echo "Obtaining IP address via dhcp....." dhcpcd wlan0& dhcpcd wlan0 echo "Script completed successfully - your card should now be activated." end copying above this line Now place the file in your /bin file and voila - just run this from the console or shell or whatever command line interface you use and just type wlancfg (or whatever you named the script) and the rest is automatic. Sorry about the confusion and left out commands - I was a bit tired... P.S. I tested this on Suse 8.2 pro and 9.1 pro and on Yoper linux - it worked on all cases - and my hardware is the same as yours. Good luck -So Long and Thanks for All the Fish
  18. Thank you very much for your advice. I'll see what I can do. This weekend I'm going on a trip to Arkansas, but next weekend I have a 3 day weekend, so I'll get to work on it more then - that said I'm going to look at it tonight. The project has a mailing list but I think its dead. There have been no additions in years. I did note some people who wanted it ported - I'll try contacting them. Thanks for all the advice -I'll get working on it all asap!

    Kernel 2.6.8.1 & Reiserfs

I don't know too much about reiser fs or the 2.6.8 kernel either, but I have noted that a kernel upgrade can break compatibility on certain systems and not on others, so isn't it possible that the problem is a combination of hardware and the 2.6 kernel and not the file system at all? Or is it also possible that the problem is (2.6 Kernel)+(Hardware)+(Reiser FS)...
  20. And I know you are correct, but if the answer truely is 42 then what is the question? Certainly not nine times six. Or is it "How many roads must a man walk down?". I think if we can resolve this then we can do anything - everything will just start to work instantly - its the ultimate question. And Linux is ultimately the 42 in all this....I'm being vague yay! P.S. I can't seem to get an e-mail response from the origional author of the 2.2 kernel dplay ip masq. --So long and thanks for all the fish!
  21. I'll put in as much time as would be necessary to get this started. I've never participated in such a project before, so I look foreward to putting a good deal of energy in this. What could someone like myself with no programming expirence contribute to the project? The only thing I can think if is testing, and maybe research. I've collected all the old projects source code and the source code to the ip_nat_ftp module - the one that works with the 2.4 kernels.

    Konsole doesn't work in X11

Hey - this is the first time I have encountered a problem like this. Whenever I try to start any kind of shell or konsole, it opens fine, and menus and such work, but there is no way to type. The text portion remains blank. There is a white square but nothing to indicate its working. This is a recent development, and no hardware has been added. I can boot to init 3 and use the text based interface there, but thats the only way. I'm used to tail-f /var/log/messages to solve problems but since I can't open a console I can't even view that - checking the log doesn't reveal anything anyway however. Specs: Yoper Linux - 2.6 Kernel Compaq Armada 7800 PII 350 256 MB Ram Linksys WirelessG PCMCIA Card Colorful sparkly zebra sticker I found while at work one day that I sutck on for some reason that I can't remember but I'm sure it was good. Any help would be appriciated because I can't compile or really do anything useful now. I'm stuck using the run command to run quick scripts I write.

    Konsole doesn't work in X11

My problem is not quite the same as cibi3d. My problem does not change depending on who is logged in, and I can type in a run command, though I can't start a shell from the run command. I can however, run shell scripts from the run command - they run transparantly and I can't see whats happening, but I know they are working because one shell script starts my wireless network card using ndiswrapper. I'll check on the things you mentioned though. Also where is makedevs??

    Konsole doesn't work in X11

HEy - It does sound plausible that its a path problem, though I'd assume its slightly different from mine. I can use the run command, and can't use the Konsole no matter who I log in as. Still, its a good thought - I'll look into it some more. IF anyone else has any ideas please let me know.
