But my problem is not restricted to just xmms. Xmame has the same problem.

I'm using FC3 and recently I've been getting "Segmentation fault"s when I try to run certain programs like xmms and xmame. Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

I tried it out and it's true. It's laughable that MS has to resort to sneaky tactics.

I want to write a shell script that can check if my Azureus downloads are completed, then exit Azureus and shut down my PC. can anyone point me to a website or some resource that might help me out with this?

Try installing another kernel version. I got the same problem with 2.6.11-1.27 kernel on FC3. The problem didnt occur when I used the 2.6.1101.35 or 2.6.9 kernel.
-
I installed the 2.6.9 kernel and my external HDD works fine in it. Weird. I thought the newer kernel is supposed to work better than the older one.

I'm intending to switch over to Fedora Core 4 from FC3 so I got a portable hard disk to backup my 5 GB+ worth of files and documents. I was worried that my portable HDD wouldn't work but was really relieved when I plugged it in yesterday and it auto-mounted like a flash drive. However, this morning I upgraded to the 2.6.11-1.35 kernel and now the portable HDD won't auto-mount. When I tried to manual mount, I got a msg saying " fat32 is not supported by kernel" or something like that. I tried to us my old kernel but it wouldn't boot up. Got an error msg "kernel panic".Can anyone help me out here? I really need my HDD to backup.

Lol. That's a heavy upgrade man. Upgrades always have problems. Better to do a fresh install:-)

Which is the best Live CD distro around these days? One that balances size, speed and packages. I normally use SLAX but I'm looking for something better.
-
Did you burn the cds correctly?
-
But why Debian? Why not Unbuntu or some other Debian-derived distro that has a secure code base and more up-to-date packages?
-
I'm still a APT fan though. I've had very bad experiences with Yum in the past.
-
You still need to go to init 3 to do the install. What I was asking was whether any additional hacking is required to get the driver working other than the regular install steps.
Urm. Pardon me for saying this but what makes Debian so good? I like Debian for it's Free Software guidelines and their non-commercial approach but in what way is it better than other distros like Fedora?
-
Try RedHat 9 Unleashed. It's a whopper of a book but it's very through.
-
You mean you just installed the driver, changed the config file and it works?
-
Type in
startx
You might want to check out your /etc/inittab file to make sure that init is set to 5 and not 3.

Damn. So the nvidia drivers really dont work out-of-the-box with FC4.
-
How bout the nvidia driver? I've read some installation guides and apparently installing nvidia drivers in FC4 involves some modprobing and chown. Has anyone tried installing nvidia drivers in FC4 yet?
-
Okay. Thanks guys.
-
Does the nvidia driver work out of the box? I remember it didnt work out for FC3.

I intend to get a USB 2.0 external Mobile Hard Disk Box to fit in my old Western Digital HDD. Would this be compatible with GNU/Linux?
-
I've just downloaded and burned FC4 onto cds and before upgrading from FC3 to 4, I wanna ask if anyone here has installed FC4 and tried it out. Are there any problems with it? I remember that FC3 sucked quite badly when it first came out and has problems with alot of things like udev and the nvidia drivers.

What sound card are you using? Did you check whether your card is detected? Go to System Settings and Soundcard Detection.
-
You might want to try ejecting as the super-user.

Can anyone tell me where I can get a sound recorder for GNU/Linux. I need one that can record sound that is played on my PC. Cos I listen to Internet radio and sometimes I wanna record songs or when I play videos and I wanna record the audio. I already have Sound Recorder but it doesn't seem to do the job.
