    learning

im going to say debian i just switched to it not to long ago, and my favorite thing for that is apt-get and the amount of pacakages you can get for it the install isnt the hard just have to know a bit about the computers and the computer is customized to what u want now albeit debian still doesnt have the easiest installer so these are debian variants i know of ubunutu excellent and easy enough to install knoppix mepis alright other than debian ive tried fedora core 2 good distro as well, my main complaint for that is up2date not real stable id have to say, but good news is you can get apt-get for fedora as well and that will make it easy to have it comes with alot of different packages, and the install is a breeze with anaconda, only thing is i beleive core 3 is coming out soon those are my favorite 2 distros (note for debian im using sarge)

    Debian configuration

yeah even in the testing area they are a bit dated but configure some more repositories or you can do this under sypnatic tools repositories new i prefer doing it the text way /etc/apt/sources.list then you can head over to http://www.apt-get.org/main/ then at the bottom of each entry it will have something like this deb http://ftp.freenet.de/pub/debian-openoffice/ woody main contrib now just copy and paste it into /etc/apt/sources.list i beleive each entry should have a # sign in front of it i did that because the originals did maybe somebody could tell me what the repository is for debians offical site for testing and unstable ie on the debian site and then packages there official package list not someone elses also the more repositories you add the longer it will take to update but then youll get more software on

    Gentoo Incompatible???`

All right i just finished rebuilding my computer ill give the specs first then explain the problem i440 BX motherboard chipset The board has soundblaster 5.1 platinum built into it geforce mx 2 32 mb video card DLINK ethernet Creative 12X DVD drive Smart Fast CD writer no idea about the speed 160GB hard Drive 4X 128MB PC100 SDRAM 650MHZ SLOT 1 P3 all right the problem is my computer is very selective with linux it wont boot mepis 2004 RC2, yoper, gentoo/gentoo based, knoppix, mandrake, slackware, etc. essentialy it will only boot fedora or redhat even with those they come up with errors consistently. So i guess what im asking is would there be a way to fix this. Like possibly get another cd drive would that rectify the issue. to give a picture of what i want to use is NAVYN OS ive been using it on my laptop for a week and a half its gentoo based, wheni try to boot it just reboots, with the other distrobutions they would just get errors and reboot. So is there anythingi can do.

    Gentoo Incompatible???`

The errors are saying file is not present, file is corrupt i fixed it by putting a weight on the enter key and 8 hours later new system um thanks for the interest but im not real worried the computer is in need of way to many repairs right now the main issue is the cd drives as stated is royally screwed it all started when i saw it smoking and heard noises resembling a gunshot coming from it um needles say im still using the thing second hint all fedora discs tried are failed tried on two other computers pass third hint is that it doesnt install key system components um i installed ubuntu after 30 times and it was missing xfree86 not even going to guess that one but the errors for fedora arent starting up its keeping it going and my average install is about 3 hours for one disk all right the last thing as well is if i reboot sometimes ill get a good three times usage and then it comes up with No operating system found or grub error 18 right now im just debating as to whether i should repair it

    Gentoo Incompatible???`

Thanks Black Page I was poking through the bios and i found something really odd the processor speed was set differently listed in three places during the post screen it said 650MHZ during the boot where it lists all the hardware it lists the processor at 450 and in bios it said it was 550 ill try to turn off what i can theres no really nothing onboard but the sound and a few ports serial parrallell etc. network and graphics are pci but ill try that thanks and ill keep up my findings i got fedora 2 on it and its running fast though and lastly once i get the cash ill try getting a new drive i was thinking it was that because it took 7 and a half hours to install core 2 thanks
  25. i just got a issue of pc mag and it was about is windows at fault anyway gates said linux had more holes and a outside source did a study and find only 128 in xp and 268 in debian the get the facts ads are bad though my computer teacher points them out to me just because i use linux
