Cant find a way to install Mandrake 10.1

-Make sure you have burned all of your 3CDs correctly(tell your CD burner application that you are burning ISO images, and not as data format and don't use re-writable cds) -Once you done burning the images, pop in the CD1 into your cd-rom and reboot computer (it shoould bring up a boot loading screen, so you can start your installation) -If CD1 is not recognized at boot, makes sure your bios settins say to boot up from cd-rom. If this doen't work, all I can suggest is to try out the LiveCDs at htttp://www.distrowatch.com and try out Mepis, knoppix, etc. which come in just one LiveCD (a LiveCD has basically has an OS in a CD and they won't touch your current data in your computer, and you can install the OS to your HD if you want to) Good luck.

Linux/MythTV drivers for 2nd gen PVR cards

I checked out your website. I think I like that feature that if someone breaks in into your house, then you are able to see it through your mobile phone. Many house owners will be interested in this I think.

No way, are you serious. How sad? Why would MPlayers be shutting down. That's a sad news for the open source community.

Unable to boot Linux Mandrake from CD

Have your tried loading up one of the Linux Live CDs in your computer to play around with. I'm not saying that you should get away from Mandrake (Which is one of my favorites) but I would recommend either download some live CDs like Knoppix, Mepis, BeatrIX, Morphix, and so on. Check it at http://distrowatch.com/. You download this live CDs into one cd, burn it, boot the computer with cd inside cd-rom, and jut play! Good thing is that it doesn't touch your system at, but you can always decide to install them to your hardrive if you desired. Or you can can download the three CDs from Mandrake and try to see that maybe something happened to the CDs.

    Spyware? Virus?

I've been using Linux for the last couple of years from Mandrake, red-hat, fedora, etc...but now I think I really like Knoppix. I must say that linux has really the best OS out there. I love it. I was wondering though...is there such a things as spyware and/or malware on Linux? I'm supposing not since I've never heard of such a thing, but just wondering. Has there been any viruses for it? Many people argue that there hasn't been because it is not the mainstream OS yet. I'm a network admin for my company, and I would love to get them on linux, but I guess there are a bunch of software that I'm don't think is supported under Linux (yeah, wine people would suggest but in reality in only fully supports 10 software apps out there. The apps that my job mostly use are (if anyone knows out there the matches for it that would beautifully work under linux, please post it): Act Best Software - Mass 90, 200 Quickbooks And some of there third party apps suchs as timeclocks software.

    Spyware? Virus?

Another thing that we should add is that in the console we can also use netstat, which will display applications that are connected or listenning to net and through which ports. netstat -ta will display this.

I don't know how to instal amarok in simply mepis 3.3

Thanks Danleff, Wow, I didn't know about this nice application. It's awesome...It's very close to Itunes and probably even better in my opinion.

    xine

I think I would get this problem back in the old days when xine wouldn't have the right codecs, such as libdvdcss, or it if can't find the where the physical path to the DVD player is if I am correct. I think I installed the libdvdcsss and created a symlink to the dvd player. I don't remember the exact code to create the symslink but I'm sure someone here knows for sure. What distro do you have? Good luck....

Which version of Linux do you have? I was going to say to need to install libpng, but you already have it..unless it is looking for a newer or older version.

    KDE or GNOME?

I've also had Knoppix for a little while and liked the way I had my KDE desktop configured with superkaramba running a bunch of cool applications on my desktop, transparent menus and taskbar, and etc. with very low cpu resources, but now I've been using ProMepis and I have configured it also to make it look just like the way I had it with knoppix but a little more advanced though with cool desktop backgrounds and a 3Ddesktop manager. Personally I like KDE more than Gnome and this is probably because I stopped messing around with Gnome, which I have heard so many good things about it as well. You can also configure Gnome to look as fancy as you want it to look as I have seen in some of the screenshots posted at http://www.gnome-look.org/. I have read stories where someone had configured their gnome desktop to look just as a MacOSX desktop and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. I remember I used to mess with gnome when red hat 8 came out. So I guess both are excellent window managers and same goes for IceWM, but for now KDE seems to be the most popular.

    Java programming in GNU/Linux

What's the "8" doing after the statement "7% discount....);" ? Can't you use Netbeans to write and compile your Java programs under Linux.? I'm thinking it is the same thing as in windows where it looks all nice with a text editor, debugger, package manager, etc. Last time I checked suns website I though they had a Netbeans for Linux.

    What are the must gets?

I have a question! How do you install "Sunbird"? I downloaded and moved the whole folder to the /usr/share then I added if to the kicker menu redirecting the command to sunbird with its appropriate icon, but after loggin out the shorcut in the kicker menu disappeared. How do you install it then...?

I correct myself. You should be able to run the install.sh by either exceuting the following command: sh install.sh or ./install.sh

Best Linux to use for complete newbie

I never experimented with it, but it sounds like it is a good distro since it is linked to RH. If you try it, let us know what you think.

    Securing a network

You know I have experimented with FC3, but not with its firewall/NAT, but I know there's a special Linux distro that lets you convert you computer into a dedicated firewall. They have docs on well-known strategies, or network plans and diagrams that you can follow so you can secure your network. It is supposed to let you do all kinds of manipulations with ports and other network security things. This distro is called Smoothwall. Check it out.

Best Linux to use for complete newbie

You might want to try the linux distros that come with live CDs. If you are not familiar with live CDs, they are just simply an OS in a CD that is bootable and you can work from and of course it won't install onto your HD, unless want to, and it won't damage any of your windows HD at all. I would suggest experimenting with Knoppix, Morphix, or my favorite, which I think it is almost a perfect linux distro Mepis. ProMepis comes with lots of the plugins or packages that you may need on a daily basis. I highly recommend Mepis and since you have laptop and if you have trouble booting the live CD if you decide to use SimplyMepis, then go to this website: http://www.mepis.org/node/view/3829 You can check out this site if you haven't to see the alternatives for the different distros out there: http://distrowatch.com/

    getting hotmail with evolution mail

Quote: iamroot Posted - 2005-02-07 20:23:56 Hotmail doesn't have POP3 access. Yahoo and GMail have though. Yahoo does? But it is not free though, right! I thought only gmail was the only one with free pop3 mail access.

    divx for linux

I think with this installable scripts .sh in the past I have used the following statement and has sometimes worked: bash install.sh, but I'm sure there's another better wayto do it, which hopefully someone will post it here. Or maybe try ./install, usually these programs come with a "configure" script to be run. If it is, navigate to where you have program and do ./configure, then 'make', and last 'make install'. Usually these are the general commands for installing programs. Hope this helps and doesn't confuse you at all. Oh yeah, you probably have to execute it as root.

    wanting to rip my cds

Yeah, it might be a copyright thing. That's one of the reasons why I moved on from FC3 because I was trying to listen through XMMS an archived sound byte or rather a radio webcast and it wouldn't let because of some new copyright policies that they had implemented. But then again, it may just be that you need to manually mount the CD first as suggested by iamroot.

    Partitions in Mandrake 10.1

You know, partitions are up to you, but of course there are general recommendations how you should partition your HD. Some of the general rules that I would follow for partitioning my HD for Mandrake are: -Create a boot partition at least 100Mb -Create a Swap partition three times greater than your RAM, so if you have a 256 RAM multiply it by 3. -Creat a Root( / ) partition and I would say about 60 to 70% of your HD. -Create a Home partition (/home) with 25% to 30% of your HD or just use whatever space is left. You can go on creating additional partions if you prefer such as for /var, /www, etc...but usually I never did. There are many tutorials online that will give some general guidelines for this as well: http://www.linuxplanet.com/linuxplanet/tutorials/3174/1/ Right now I'm using ProMepis and the only partitions I need are swap, and root, but it is always suggested to make some partitions for security porpuses.

    ProMepis 2005.b4 help

I installed SimplyMepis and messed with it for about a week. No complainst. I think it is very stable. I installed ProMepis yesterday. It comes with a few glitches, but I think I like what see in this distro. However, the glitches that I found were for one, firefox kept crashing on me at first, second the fonts that I tried to change on firefox would go back to its default fonts everytime I tried to change them, third sukperakaramba kept crashing on me a couple of three times but now seems ok. Anyhow, the one that I still would like resolve is how do I get rid of some of the partition icons that get mounted into my desktop. I had this same issue with knoppix as well and even SimplyMepis. I like my desktop somewhat clean and I don't want to have all those icons all over my desktop. I have tried deleting that specific line on the fstab, but of course it must be dynamic since after reboting the always reappeared.
