    XP networks will generally find all computers connected to

    the router or hub but since you are using a domain your

    machines are not members of that workgroup so they cannot

    be accessed.

    Although a workigroup will locate other boxes connected by hub

    or router it can only accesss the ones that belong to the same workgroup and have shared folders.

    I had the same problem with VISTA and a lynksis hub.

    Finally gave up and set up an old XP box with USB

    connection to cable modem as server.Internet works fine now.

    Only have 3 boxes networked but can go online with all 3 at

    same time.Don't know about your system but I don't notice

    any difference in speed.

    I have a new Presario SR2173WM running VISTA.

    This computer is networked with my HP W2040 with XP

    and my daughters Presario running VISTA.

    Each computer has a shared folder named dwnlds for

    downloads and file transfer.

    The problem ; I can got to either of the other two

    computers on the network and upload files to the SR2173WM

    but when I am logged on to the SR2173WM (even as administrater) and try to download files I just get a

    requester saying I don't have permission to perform this

    action.

    I have tried every combination of permissions on all 3

    boxes I can think of but the problem persists.Also,the

    read only attribute is checked on theSR2173WM and when

    I clear it the OS rechecks it.

    It doesn't seem right to me that anyone on another

    computer has more control of this box than administrator.

    Any suggestion will be appreciated.

    I've been burning at 4x with this drive

    for about 18 months.It is a different brand

    disks,though.My daughter bought them for my

    birthday.That may well be all it is.

    I've known for some time that some cd's are

    not compatible with 1x but never had a problem

    with 4x before.

    I'm using SUSE 10.0.

    I've recently started using k3b to burn ISO files.

    I prefer burning at 4x but k3b bumps it up to 8x.

    Is there any way to stop that?

     

    I like watching news videos on the web.

    When trying to play web videos with linux FireFox,I

    get a message saying I need to install directX but

    I can't find a working relationship between directX

    and linux firefox.

    Any suggestions will be appreciated.

     

    (I've lived longer and heard more than I care to admit so any attempt to offend me will be in vain.)

    This works for me on all SUSE distros I've tried including 10.0.

     

    Go to

    Control Center/Sound and multimedia

    unselect "Autosuspend if idle for [5 sec.]

    (Default is 5 seconds which means sound is turned

    off 5 seconds after startup.)

    Click "apply"

    Go back to Control Center and select "System Notifications".

    Check "Apply to all Applications"

    Click "Turn on all [sounds]

    Click apply

     

    From main menu

    select "volume control"

    push sliders for master,Master Mono and PCM all the

    way up.

    click "Apply"

     

    Restart computer and use the speaker icon to adjust volume>

    OK

    After I posted my last reply ,a friend told me

    that text isn't on the SLES DL page anymore.

    I subscribed to the 30 day free trial so I could

    DL the disks.

    On reading the license I found it is an open source

    license.The time limit is on the free upgrades and

    support.

    I'm not an attorny but the license states you may

    use as many copies as you like on as many machines

    as you want but support and updates are limited to

    30 days unless you purchase a subscription.

    This is a qoute from the download page

    for the SLE9 free trial.

    "NOTE: The only limitation of this evaluation software is the duration you will have free access to updates and patches. Should you choose to license Novell Open Enterprise Server you will be provided with a new activation code."

    I assume that means you can keep using it but you won't get free

    updates and patches after the trial period.

    How big is the MadDog ?

    Try formating a primary at about 30 gb then

    format the rest as extended and divide the

    extended partition into logical drives less

    than 38gb.That pavilion can't handle anything larger

    than 38 gigs.Most of the low end 40gig HDs have

    a jumper to restrict them to 38gb so those old

    HPs can read them.

    64Mg isn't enough ram to install most distros.

    Make sure your swap file is at least 500

    to make up for the low RAM.That may help although

    it will probably be a little slow.

     

    Hi,Danleff. Finally got back on cable so I can start

    DLing distros again.Now I can start playing with these

    old boxes again and just maybe say something that will

    help someone.

    Phone lines just ain't made to DL distros.

    If you have ubuntu 4.10 , puppy linux or an older version

    of Mepis and some free space on one of your drives,

    You can try installing one of those. They will usually find all

    your partitions when installing bootloader and rewrite part. table.

    Fat32 on hdb is probably screwing up partition tables, like windows ,it wants to be #1.

    Oh,yeah it's either sane or xsane you need to edit to turn on

    HPOJ.

    Reading the above link suggests two or three drivers that work with different distros. Some distros need hpoj for scanning and

    hpijs for printing.Some just need hpijs.Also ,you may have to

    install hpoj and get your scanner working then install hpijs to

    get your printer working.(Don't know why but on some systems you

    have to get your scanner working with hpoj first then install hpijs for printing.For some obscure reason the scanner won't set

    up with hpijs installed on some systems.)

    You need HPOJ to and xsane to scan with hp psc.

    The HP scanner can't be found with the usual scanning

    drivers. Use gimp to scan and save then use kooka to

    process the images.

    When you setup the printer,the scanner is setup with it.

    I'll have to look at something and get back to you.

    You may have to turn on hpoj in one of the kernal files.

    I'm thinking fstab but not sure.Anyway the line you will

    be looking for is probably "HPOJ =off" If you setup your psc

    with hpijs,You'll have to change that to "HPOJ = on".

    If you see someone who never messes up, you're looking at

    someone who doesn't have a computer.

     

    For me ,older versions are usually better. Only thing I

    get from newer versions is drivers. ( SUSE now has the

    Suse version of LTwinmodem that is very easy to install

    and works great with most Lucent winmodems.)

    I usually use SUSE to access the internet but right now

    I'm experimenting with ububtu and kubuntu (KDE version of ubuntu).

    Yes , two or more versions of linux are running

    happily alongside xp on a lot of computers.

     

    A little information would help answer the how part.

    Do you have more than one hard drive,or do you

    want to put them all on one drive?

     

    What os is installed and is it ok to remove and reinstall ?

     

    As much information as you can give on your hardware.

    ( different hardware needs different tweaks.)

    Use ubuntu version 4.10 to find your OS's.

    I tried upgrading to version 5.04.

    Well, everything looked fine,until I booted

    windows.

    I don't know if it's just my machine,but

    with version 5.04,after booting windows,

    version 5.04 says all the OS's are not

    valid operating systems and refuses to

    boot anything.

    You can still use all of that 15 gig HD.

    I assume from your post your system can

    handle a 5 gig HD.

     

    So do this.

    Boot with win98 floppy.

    Run fdisk.

     

    First be sure your 15 gig HD is selected.

     

    Select "1". (Create Primary Dos Partition

    or extended DOS partition.)

     

    1. Select "Create Extended DOS Partition"

    and make another 5 gig partition.

     

    2. Select "Creat Logical DOS Drive in Extended DOS Partition".

     

    Repeat 1 and 2 .

     

    Now your computer thinks the 15 gig HD is three 5 gig HDs.

    You can use one just for a swap file if you want.

     

    I had to learn this years ago to utilize a 10gig HD I bought

    for a 66mhz Packard Bell that couldn't use over 1 gig per HD.

    The machine thought I had 8 HDs and the drive still had unused space.

    And ,WOW!, I had a whole 8 megs of ram.

    Hi , Danleff

    I think he said that disk came glued inside a book cover.

    Those disks sometimes take a beating in route to bookstores

    so you're probably right about it being corrupted.

    Also ,he said he started the machine then tried to cram it

    in the drive before the bootloader took over.Probably got

    a few scratches.
