i forgot my root password on red hat 9 what should i do. how can i recover it without reinstalling redhat? before, once i get this probelm i just reinstalled the OS and all my files are gone... and also how can i do it on fedora core 2??? tnx a lot...

does anyone know how to add a usb device to linux? you c i had a usb device and attached it to my linux box but i do not know how to mount it, i dont even know if linux has detected it?? what shall i do???

my kernel is 2.6, my OS is fedora core 2. I did not change my kernel. I did not upgrade my kernel. My kernel is as is when i first installed my os.

how do i recompile the kernel in fedora core 2 inorder to get the ntfs support??? in red hat 9.0 i just used this commands: make mrproper make xconfig make dep make bzImage make module make module_install make install when i tried xconfig in fc2 the gui was somewhat corrupted not displaying the correct characters! so, i tried make menuconfig, everything worked well until when i reboot my system and it got errors and won't be able to boot anymore. what shall i do???? and also i got this rpm file in the net that says it will enable ntfs support. if i install it will i be able to get ntfs support without even recompiling the kernel??? also it says it has full support for ntfs, does it mean it has write support for ntfs??? is it safe to use it??

fedora core 2 doesn't readily support ntfs filesystems. i recompiled the kernel. why is it that when i run xconfig no letters are showing up its like encrypted so i tried menu config after the whole process of recompilation when i restarted fedora it got error and wont even continue booting up! what is wrong wih my fedora?? all i did is just execute these following commands: make mrproper, make menuconfig. make dep, make clean, make bzImage, make modules and make modules_install. after i boot it my fedora got errors and doesn't continue to boot anymore.

does any one know how to check my downloaded iso using the md5sum file??? because i downloaded a mandrake 10.0 and it had many package errors, my cd just got wasted for nothing.

at home i had a dual boot system, one is xp and the other is red hat 9.0 before you try and install any linux distro try researching about its hardware compatibilities. my red hat 9.0 did not detect my NIC which is braodcom4400 i think?! so i just downloaded the linux verison of that driver and walla i get to configure my network connection!

i recommend xmms. its like an mp3 player! this is what i used at home, although for rh9 you must download a patch. you do a search for it on the web. and also for playing movies i use xine player. they are just fine. there are lots of cool video and audio players out there, just try to search for them. i even play .rm files using xine media player and also .wmv and .wma fles...

when i try to mount a shared folder in windows xp using samba no error would occur but when i open the mounted share and try to type ls i get some message in my command prompt saying: ls.:Stale NFS file handle.

when i tried the start here and typed smb:/ i get error, but when i go to the console mode i get no errors and i can browse through my windows share through and throught!! no problems. the problem with gui is that everytime i access a shared folder deep down to the lst directory i am always asked for an authenticaation. and sometimes you just get disconected for no reason at all.

is there any way to recover my root password in case i get lock out, ot forgot the root password???

what does the error in samba mean: stale NFS file handle. why is it that when i try to view my entire network in windows xp i c my samba server but when i try to access it i get error message saying that "access is denied, i may not have enough permission to access it" what should i do, i already made a share in my smb.conf config file and even made it guest ok = yes, but still i cant access samba!

Why is it that when i try this one: smb:/// get an error, or whenever i dont get error and i try to go deeper in to the shared folder i am always prompted to login. when i mounted the share and explore deeper into the share using the console i am not asked to supply a username and password. oh, and by the way i already mounted the share folder in xp and i can already explore on it but when i try the smb:/// i get an error also my winxp can already see the samba server i put up but my problem is when accessing the samba server. i get an error saying that access is denied, it says that i dont have the permission to access it, but also sometimes an error says that network not find whenever i double click on it. when i try to issue the comand net view the samba server can also be seen... could you help clear things out???

my lancard works on other os like windows, my knoppix is installed on the harddrive and i am not connected to the internet and i am using static ip. i have a windows server and my knoppix is on a workstation. My lancard and network is fine with red hat 9.0 using samba. it can ping to the server using samba and even mount it. when i installed knoppix in the hard drive i used the debian style and knoppix style like in the cd. you see i installed 4 linux distro's and red hat is the only distro that's working fine with the network.

is it similar to windows' that you can execute any file as long as it is included in the path. In windows you can change the path so windows will automatically execute the executable file.

what is kerberos ?? is there any good tutorial to download about it???

i tried the driver you gave me but i get errors whenn i compile it... my lancard is already detected and i inputed all the necessary data including the ip add, gateway, etc but still i cannnot network my mandrake. when i try to ping my gateway i recieve mesgs like destination host unreachable.

were can i find a good tutorial about it???
