Quote: Quote: definately annoying advertising! The advertising company is testing those new text ads. What is annoying on that ads? This type of ad highlights only up to 4 words on the entire page. The ad text links looks also different that the usual links. I don’t see where the problem is? It's deceptive. I can't tell you off the top of my head what color the normal links are on the page so at first glance it looked like the original poster was spamming, especially since it was his first posts. Secondly, it changed the content of the post made it appear that the poster was endorsing these products. I just think it's another shadey and deceptive method of advertising on the internet. However, I can't see it in firebird or safari so I won't complain too much. Anyone see these advertising compaines that create intrusive ads suing producers of web browsers that have ad-blocking tools in the future?

Quote: WTF is going on with these mouse over words in posts? Are these part of some new NTCompatible advertising system or are they being done by the poster? [edit] My post seems to have nuked them thankfully!! Sorry I have no answer for your question, just needed to ask that [/edit] Well I see them too. I don't know what that is. If it's a new advertising method for the board then I'm going to find somewhere else.
  5. Can someone point me to the site where you can download the windows updates manually? I believe it is called the corporate downloads site. I know it has been posted here many times but I cant seem to find it using the search feature.

Quote: Try this link Thanks. I'll do that
  7. I have two questions. The first is more of an annoyance. Something is changing the ownership and permissions of my .ICEauthority file to root. This prevents me from logging into an X session. The second question is where do I specify what daemons run at startup? Thanks

    My Poxy IPOD

Quote: Can anyone out there please tell me where i'm going wrong in trying to get my IPOD working.. The Problem stems from windows I think.... I'm running Win2000 prof on my laptop... I have music match installed which is fine for picking up the details of Cd's that i download to it but the program does not recognise my IPOD... I also have iTunes installed but where this program recognises my IPOD it doesn't pick up any of the Cd's track names... I have tried importing the songs from music match to iTunes but this is not working either... what i would like is one program that works fully... not two programs that half work..... can anyone help...? Please...? Before i launch the poxy thing into the river.... I had to download a plugin to use the ipod with musicmatch. Beware though, when I used it musicmatch permanently chopped off the last character in every field of every tag in my library. Is the problem with iTunes that it won't get the track names for cds off the web? If that is the case, there is a menu option to do this. There is also a setting to do this automatically. And what is the problem with ripping in musicmatch and importing to iTunes?

Is XP compatible with 2000 pro for home networking?

Quote: Win2k defaults to "WORKGROUP", while WinXP defaults to "MSHOME". I had always thought that as well. It suprised me that in a recent XP Pro installation the workgroup was defaulted to "WORKGROUP." I'm not sure why this was the case.

Guys looking for a good fantasy game similar to..

Quote: Gothic I + II I just got GothicII. I had never heard of it but was just looking for a new game to play on the net and saw nothing but positive reviews. It seems like it will be a very long game. Maybe I'm just going slow though.

    That's It Getting a MAC!!!

I have a 1GHz powerbook and I really like it. Computationally it is quite a bit slower then my XP2100 desktop but I still really like it. It has all the advantages of using a unix/linux machine without all the hardware hell. It's cake to download and install open source applications to run in X with fink. There are little things that bug me though. Like the lack of a right mouse button and preinstalled apple-scripts that don't work. Overall I am very pleased with it. At the moment, I plan on sticking with X86 on the Desktop and Apple for the laptop. As for upgrading hardware, you can do it through third-party companies.

    Invalid boot.ini file

Theres an application included with XP Pro that will create/edit the boot.ini file. I don't know if this is included with 2000 nor can I remember what it was called. I seem to remember it being a command line program though.

Hey Alec! - automated video card overclocking.. :)

Quote: that does look like an oldie. what i was curious of is how the program knows when it has automatically found an error and to lower the clock speed. i mean why cant the actual ATI and nvidia software do this then so when a system crashes it can say - hey - we found an error in pixel X etc. Well how does it overclock? Does it raise the memory frequency? If it does this and can access the memory directly, it should be able to just do a bunch of writes and reads and make sure the vaules are the same (similar to what memtest86 does). I'm not sure what effect raising the voltage has in overclocking. I would assume that it'd would do the same memory testing though.

    External IDE Enclosures

I am looking to get an external hard drive enclosure to store media files on to access from two computers. http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=17-146-172&catalog=92&depa=0 This is the one I am considering. I notice that it has two firewire ports in the back. Does this mean that I can have it hooked up to two machines at once? I have never used an external hard drive or enclosure and I just want to make sure I am understanding this correctly.

    External IDE Enclosures

Well I want to use it between a XP machine and an apple machine and XP doesn't recoginze the "apple device." The more I think about it, I just need a firewire server. I might look into doing that eventually. I guess my best option for now is just to plug and unplug.

    External IDE Enclosures

I'm not familiar with the term dasiy-chaining. I assume it means hooking up multiple devices together so that it only uses one firewire connection on your computer. From what I understand, bridgeboards do the basicly the same thing for IDE devices, having 2 IDE cables and one Firewire cable. If this is the case, I don't see how that will help me any. Is there any way to have two machine simultaneously hooked up to the same firewire device. I'd even settle for a switch of some sort that I could flip to choose between machines.

    power source

Quote: Quote: thx for the answers, since i dont wana risk anything ill buy a 500w, i think i can get one for about 20 bucks, anyway thx again Good god! That's not a good way to go about getting the PSU. Spend some money on one. If you've got the cash to drop on the video card, pay a little more for a quality PSU. Not all PSU's are equal. The cheper ones are cheaper for a reason. Buy an Antec, Sparkle/Fortron...something good. I wouldn't pay anything under $50. Even that's a little low.

Batch convert WPD to DOC ?? Possible?

Quote: My people had a borrowed copy of wordperfeft which is now gone, machine died, money is tight, licenses are now enforced so more unlicensed software. MS office is fully licensed, many Wordperfect documents exist. Is there a cheap or free way to batch convert the wpd to msword doc? Or is theree a ms office utility to do them all in one shot? One that will convert it and make them filename.doc from filename.wpd ? Opening and converting them one at a time will work, but will take much too long. Why not just convert them as needed? I wouldn't trust a batch conversion completely. In the small amount of conversion between document formats that i have done I have seen pretty major formatting differences between the two versions. If I did a batch conversion, I'd still go though and check each document to make sure it's formatted correctly and no special characters are off.

    1 Second Stop ?

Quote: pc only one year old, the only change i have made is videocard to fx5900. do think psu has not got a enough juice? That's top of the line isn't it? If you upped your video card up that much that might be the case. Any idea what how many Watts your PSU has? A lot of the "bargain price" PCs will come with barely enough to run it with the stock parts. If this happens just in games and you have a high range videocard, my money's on the psu. I don't know if there are any applications you can download to test it or not.
  24. http://www.arstechnica.com/wankerdesk/04q1/sp2-beta-1.html Looks like some good improvements to me. They made the firewall much like zonealarm's where you can specify access for specific programs. They also took away the full priviledges that the RPC had which allowed for all the worms several months ago. Looks pretty good to me. I never got SP1 though.

Gimp for windows basic config question

I am trying to combine several very large (4+ MB) files using the gimp. Decompressed, these files are pushing 100 MB. I have 300+ MB of free memory but the gimp won't even use half of it. It insists on using it's swap space instead. So it's taking minutes just to move one layer to try to line it up on another layer. Can I specify the maximum amount of memory to use? There are two settings (Maximum Image Size and tile size) but I'm not sure what these are refering to. Are these what I am looking for?
