i have windows 2000, and since i hate the 60 hertz refresh rate glitch, i disabled it with a display utility. apparently there is a bug in empire earth where the startup screen only runs in 60 hertz. in other words, i get a blank screen on startup. i am not planning on running this game at 60 hertz ever, especially since i become nauseated when i watch the monitor at that frequency for too long. is there a way to run in a window, or change the refresh rate?
-
Quote: what graphics card are you running, and with what drivers? radeon 9000 with the latest drivers for it and dx9 and sp3 (win2k) its not the driver, its the refresh rate. the game's menu only runs in 60 hz i disabled it. i need a way to run it in at least 75 hz

the disk check could not be performed because exclusive access to the drive could not be obtained..... this happens when i run disk check or norton disk check or anything similar. what is causing this and how do i fix it win2000 60 gig hd on ata133 card
-
Quote: Due to the filesystem of NT/2000/XP, exclusive disk access is disallowed. that must explain why its next to impossible to fix a corrupted ntfs disk i use the boot up scanner, but i dont trust it to fix everything
-
thanks ill try that gotta free up space on my other drive to move the swap file i have 512 mb sdram too but i doubt ill tempt fate by not using a swap file wish me luck

Quote: After you get a new drive you could low level format on the old drive, might get rid of those bad sectors If you're planning to setup a raid, the ideal is if you have two equal drives. If you don't you can still use jbod. sounds like i should low level format my seagate drive then, how do i do that? and whats jbod ;( i suppose raid might work if i format the 80 gig to have a 60 gig partition but im not too comfortable messing with stuff ive never tried before ill probably ruin it. also wouldnt the rpm difference screw with performance? ack, dont think i really wanna make my drives into coasters my western dig 60 gig drive is 5400 rpm, the 80 gig i want to buy is 7200, is it that much louder?
-
right now, i can get a 80 gig 7200 western digital for 82$ free shipping a 120 gig samsung is 110$, but i doubt i'll need it the maxtor one is 10 or so$ more and has same mb buffer (does maxtor offer any better data fetching techniques?) so if its not any better than wd... besides my second 60 gig is a western digital no problems whatsover of course i formatted it with ntfs and my other one is fat32 hmmm can i set up raid with a wd 60 and wd 80 gig? sounds interesting my ata 133 card supports raid, i just dont know how to use it ;(

is there a workaround of this? is it possible at all to get scandisk to run in windows instead of rebooting? if it wasnt possible, i dont think the option would be there..
-
whoops Quote: windows wont be able to read it in dos :x you know what i mean.... ;( scandisk from a 98 boot disk

a lot of people seem to dislike ibm hard drives are they that unreliable? not that id buy one i also heard that some older maxtor drives have noise problems after a while but besides that rumor, i hear theyre not bad. so i guess that leaves western digital... anybody got bad experience to share about it? oh and for seagate, isnt there some seagate tool that im supposed to use to format my drive? i heard if you use stuff like that, windows wont be able to read it in dos i know that from having a old 4.X gig on my last pc that had to run a diag util to get past the 2 gig limit i guess that was because of an old bios or something oh well dont matter, sold it on ebay for 50$ lol maybe im just thinking of the utility for the 2 gig problem but i thought you had to use it anyway even if you didnt need it

go here http://www.majorgeeks.com/showfiles.php?cat=31&PHPSESSID=cfe9555e70245cc796e70b9e0e0f4a52 thats all you need

awww come on, its been like a week. im sure somebody knows how to help. OK!!!! if you are completely devoid of any ideas whatsoever, then what about this: how can you use windows 2000 without disabling the 60 hz rate and play games in 75 hz thats primarily the problem. the bootup screen in EE uses 60 hz, the game does not. why it does this is a completely retarded idea, i cant explain it but for me windows 2000 plays all games in 60hz if its enabled i need to know if there is a way to keep 60 hz as an option but not use it when necessary. or if you can just adjust the game menu to use 75 hz refresh rate

disabling smartgart, enabling fastwrites... well? how do i install ati drivers without the smartgart crap i dont care about what they think might be stable on my pc i have a p3 mobo that supports fastwrites, a radeon 9000 that supposedly works with fastwrites, in fact this is the first time ive had a mobo/vid card combination support of fastwrites. except NOW the SOFTWARE doesnt let me!!!!!! *sigh* what a world, what a world....
-
also.... i didnt have this smartgart problem with my last nvidia card (geforce2) i dont think it even had an autodetecting gart driver... it just worked. so unless ati is having driver problems (lol) with fastwrites i dont see a reason why it shouldnt work.
-
its not the bios, plus i've had problems with my rad 9000 with the omega drivers, for some odd reason the last couple of times ive used them omega detected my card as a radeon 7500, which is not a 9000 plus the fast writes are enabled in the bios. however, there was something i read a while back on how to install the regular certified drivers without the smartgart part i just dont remember it. something about the installer.....or method of installing....

logitech wingman rumblepad second joystick not working thats pretty much it i emailed the tech support, got nothing they just told me to get the new drivers then said it was dx8's problem i waited for dx9 and NOOOOOO that was not the problem. is anyone else not being able to use the second joystick? i have 2000 i think it may work in 98 though, so its not the hardware
-
its more than that, its not just the fact that i can only use 1 joystick its that the other joystick is constantly sending data to turn in other words every time i try to bind a key to the joystick it automatically picks up the second joystick's axis instead, its a real pain.
-
i found out that its not the joystick's problem its the damn game quake3 AAAAAA!! what a pain! it works fine with the new update of ut2k3 but apparently that's the only game that i have that it works on however, i dont know how to get the joystick to go faster if you hold it the whole way in, and slower if you hold it slightly foward. and what about force feedback?
-
xwing vs tie fighter doesnt let me run it because it doesnt detect directx i hate games that force dection of a specific version of directx to run how to fix this anyone?
-
lol, i thought this was about the website that used to exist a couple of years back, about computer funny pictures, drivers etc. nevermind you probably dont remember it.

back in win95 there was a patch for midi, it was a microsoft software synthesizer, and it was free it is now called direct music, i think. but anyway, you could install it as a driver, then play doom95 with very decent midi sound. i have 2000, the website for the 95 patch is no longer at microsoft's website and i want to reenable it. if anyone knows how to correctly register the dlls to play it tell me (i dont want a midi player i want a midi driver!!!) and also dont waste space saying to get a soundblaster live or what not im not spending 200$ for midi, that defeats the purpose, since its already incorporated into microsofts OS and wingroove is a cheaper way to try a software synthesizer, i already have it, dont use it. ps here is a tutorial to check it if you dont believe me start--run--dxdiag--music tab test using this port "Microsoft Synthesizer" also WINAMP2 has in the input options support for this too do not get confused with microsoft gs wavetable sw synth. it is not the same thing compare the midi playback between this and the other options in dxdiag to see the difference in quality
