  1. I have been experiencing the most torrid computing problems for the past one month. My computer is roughly 4 years old, and it usually runs 24 hours a day. A month ago the SMPS /power went bust, and I got it replaced with a new device. For 10 days; everything went fine until the computer mysteriously started rebooting of its own, in the middle of work. I have dual boot windows XP SP1 and 98 and the rebooting happened with both the OS. The frequency was anything from 2 minutes to 2 hours. There was no blue screen, and no dumps, no errors since it wasn’t a crash; but it was like someone just hit the reset key. There were also couple of occasions when the computer didn’t start at all – The monitor instead of lighting up went into power saving mode and the HD light showed a hang [constant red LED indicator] state. I thought; perhaps it had got something to do with the new SMPS and I again got it replaced. Once again; I experienced no problems for 10 days; the computer was up and running 24 hours. And then, from the past 2 days I am plagued with the same problem. Computer restarts of its own without a damn explanation. The chances of any virus on my computer is very very remote; as I always use latest antivirus. Where could the problem lie………also I have noticed that the monitor power off and HD LED constant red situations have increased in frequency. I have to often switch on/off the computer multiple times to even get the computer to start.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. I hope it is not my MB because that would mean virtually replacing my entire system

  2. Hi

    Comp. Specs

    P-IV Intel Chipset 1.8Mhz

    Intel motherboard D845GEBV2

    512 MB Ram

ATI Radeon 7500 with 128 Mb video ram

    Win XP SP1

    Seagate 80Gigs IDE 7200

    LG DVD ROM

    BENQ 1650 DVD Writer

For the past 3 weeks, my computer keeps hanging and restarting of its own at random intervals. The computer was performing well until the 3rd of march, when I bought a BENQ DW 1650 DVD Writer. I replaced it with my old LG CD writer. It installed perfectly well, it was a simple plug and play device. When I restarted the computer after a few hours, after startup the system suddenly hanged. This had never happened for the past 2.5 yrs when I have been using this computer. On a cold restart, I got the error message [might not be 100% accurate as I hadn’t noted it down but I am trying to recall “Your computer has recovered from a serious error. A direct draw function could not be performed by the graphics card.” In the event log, I got this”……

On 6th of march, I installed a new DSL connection [prior to that I was on dlup]

On the 13th of march, my computer restarted of its own, while I was not on my desk, and I got the error “your computer has recovered from a serious error…notify MS about the problem”

I received a third such error on 20th March 2006

    Today, on 22nd March, I received a similar error…..during this time, I was burning a DVD……

    Error code 0000000a, parameter1 00000166, parameter2 00000002, parameter3 00000000, parameter4 804f48a3.

I have also noticed that sometimes the computer hangs of its own [does not restart and is not involved with any 1003 error] Instead I get this error

The IPSEC Services service terminated with the following error:

An attempt was made to access a socket in a way forbidden by its access permissions.

    Source: Service control manager

    Event ID 7023

    Category None

This error is even more frequent, I get it almost every two days, the computer hangs while downloading stuff from the net. This error has started occuring after i installed the DSL connection.

Apart from that, the computer functions absolutely normally while playing games, movies, etc………

Can someone guide me, to fix this problem without formatting my computer? I am pretty desperate

    Regards,

P.S. -> is there anyway to attach my minidumps here?

  3. Its quite a newbie question.

I have a ripped dvd vob file 1.5 gb

    I have to convert it into a avi/divx file within 700mb (1cd)

Can you suggest an app which can do so

Preferably a freeware/shareware app which provides a trial period cos i need app for this file only. (Please don't suggest Dr. Divx as it has got corrupt on my sys. and i can't reinstall it inspite of my best efforts)

    Thanks in advance

  4. i got some spyware by installing brixout xp(a game) from www.sunnygames.com (i read their entire license agreement and nothing of that sort was mentioned there.. disgusting)

I have uninstalled the program and the files it tried to download but i have a suspicion that it may star again. How can i be sure that there are no adware on my system. Please suggest some good progs. For security i have only NAV 2003 and disbaled activex controls

  5. I want to overburn a CD-R with 700 MB capacity

with a file which is 711 MB.

I am using nero 5.9. However, even after using the expert features and

allowing overburning till 90 min., I am still getting the message that there is not enough space on the CD-R. However, I am able to make copies of

VCDs containing upto 740 MB. How can i overburn

    Thanks in advance ;(

  6. I need help in running the game 'Mortal Kombat Trilogy Windows version'

I can't get it to run either in win xp sp1 or win 98se

It asks for some svga chip which I don't think is present on my system

    Specs:

    PIV Intel 1.8 Mhz

    512 MB DDR Ram

ATI Radeon 7500 128Mb video ram

    Win XP SP1

    or

    Win 98SE

  7. I have a dual boot machine machine with win98se and win xp sp1

I installed win98se only to play my old games.

So far I have seen for past 3 months that only a few games

(1998-2001) run which didn't in win xp but the dos games run most unsatisfactorily. One can use vdmsound in xp.

    1. For most dos games, I have to restart in MS DOS mode and graphics are extremely poor (they run much better in an old 386)

    2. I can't use mouse then (ms optical wheel mouse). Where can I find a dos mouse driver

    3. No sound; where can I get old drivers

    4. Games like Mortal Kombat Trilogy refuse to run because can't find some SVGA chip?

    5. Can someone provide any answers

    Thanks in advance

    wink

  8. I have tried everything and it makes matters worse. I think, the motherboard might be the problem as it s KRYPTON board [3rd party] with VIA chipset. SO, i am going to change it and see if it helps. Can you suggest a motherboard which would work for my configuration (especially having the AGP slot), may/may not have onboard sound/video, preferably from ASUS or INTEL and preferably within $140/- budget.

  9. I bought a Gameraider gamepad.

It has a very good D-Pad, USB support, eight buttons (with option to enable turbo in all of them), two front buttons, vibration mode, 2 free game CDs and was priced at Rs. 500($10/-). I would have liked to buy a Logitech gamepad but I was unable to get a demo from any of the vendors here. Also the BTW gamepad mentioned is unavailable here, and buying it from ebay was not possible due to steep shipping charges.

  11. Hi!

I bought my new computer a week back.

    Specs:

    PIV - 1.8Mhz

    Motherboard : VIA P4M266A+VT8235

    U8668D-Z4 VER:6.1

    DVD LG

    CD-R LG

    LG e700b monitor (17 ")

    ATI Radeon 7500

    Onboard AC97 sound

I have installed both win xp and win 98 SE as dual booting

    512 mb ddr RAM

I am facing numerous problems with both these OSs

    1. Win XP sometimes locks up especially when using graphic applications.

    2. WIn 98 Se -> Whenever I am running any games, the system hangs.

I ran Midtown Madness, Motorcross Madness 2, Fifa 98 and all of them lock up instanly.

    3. I am using catalyst 2.91 drivers which were provided on the driver CD.

Should I install the latest drivers with both OSs. Or is there any motherboard conflict, etc.

Also, both win xp and win 98 fail to detect my internal modem (pctel chipset). Also when I use modem drivers on CD, Win 98 shows modem attached to COM1 port. WIn xp shows modem at COM3 but COM1 also occupied.

Please help and thanks in advance.

  13. I have decided to buy an ati card but then which motherboard should i choose since now i don't require integrated graphics. I would like your opinions on the Asustek P4PE Motherboard. Also, can I find an intel motherboard with onboard sound minus the extreme graphics

    Thanks in advance

  14. I am planning to buy a new computer. The problem I am having is about the graphics card. I need a decent graphics card with 64 MB Video Ram and which is able to run most of the new games smoothly.

One option I have is to buy an intel motherboard with integrated intel extreme graphics and ac97 onboard sound. Would this do for gaming purposes or is buying a NVIDIA G-Force necessary.

    Thanks in advance

  15. I need advice on buying a gamepad

    Specs:

    1. Minimum 6 buttons (better if including couple of turbo buttons)

    2. D-Pad (direction control) should be good

    3. Win XP compatibility

    4. Compatibility with large no. of games and even better if

compatible even with olden DOS games

    5. Compatible with emulators like genesis, snes, callus, nebula, etc

    6. Not too expensive (mid range)

    7. USB Port support (not necessary if other features are good)
