    Windows XP - several problems

Quote: Number 1: I have the Windows XP Home Edition on my other computer. A few days ago I was on the computer and it said I was extremely low on disk space. I tried disk cleanup and it would not run. I have a 60 GB hard drive, and it says I only have something like 52 MB of space left. I deleted all my temp files, songs, pictures, and programs that I don't use anymore, and it still left me with very little disk space. Not sure what to do there. Again, disk cleanup will not run for some reason. Disk Cleanup Tool Stops Responding While Compressing Old Files http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;812248 Disable Low Diskspace Notification http://www.windows-help.net/WindowsXP/tune-06.html I would love to know how you "trashed" the disk space counters on your machine. How much actual free space is left on the drive? Quote: Number 2: Although the computer runs very slowly, it still runs. So I was trying to install software for a new mp3 player yesterday, and it said that my software did not work correctly. So i hit "cancel installation", but it finished anyway, and then prompted me to restart my computer. So I clicked restart, and then when it got back to the logon screen, I clicked "Owner", the name on which I always logon under, it said "Loading personal settings" and then it just restarts. I kept trying, it just keeps saying "loading personal settings" for about 30 seconds then restarts itself all over again. Not sure if the mp3 software had anything to do with it. I uninstalled it and everthing, and still does not logon. 1. Does this profile load in Safe Mode? 2. Do you have a fully updated antivirus running? 3. Have you gotten rid of spyware? Adaware? Spybot? Webroot? 4. Anything in the event logs? Need more information to help you further. Ping us back
  3. Quote: Okay trust me i have already tried letting it finish the install and i even put in the disk because i actually had a copy of Office, but it just didnt continue. and to the 2nd reply, can u explain this in more detail as far as what it actually does?? MSICUU.exe will rip out failed MSI installations from the registry. Then you would manually delete the Office 2003 Folder. Reinstall from scratch, and that should take care of it HTH

    win2k pro boot problem

Quote: Thanks Alecstaar. But I don't have any windows 2000 cd of any kind. Do you know where I can get one? Bestbuy.com Hope you werent trying to install an NT 4 driver onto your 2K machine. The printer subsystem has been completely rewritten and GENERALLY the 3rd party NT 4 only drivers will hose your machine. If you need to boot your machine to a working state and see if you can manipulate the printer drivers, try this http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ (I am assuming you have windows XP) If this is an OEM machine (DELL, Gateway, etc), do you have recovery CDs?

Please Help Norton Ghost to wrong Drive!!!!

Well you are quite lucky. Guess the sectors that held your data were not over written in the disk imaging process. You should play the lotto today, and see if that same luck carries over

    DirectX 9.0 Problems

Just a couple of things to square away 1. Are you downloading the full install? If not I would suggest using http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/detai...;displaylang=en 2. Is your 98 Machine fully patched and updated? 3. Is your AV off during this install? 4. On a lesser note, are your video drivers updated? Ping us back.
  8. At this point I would suggest a complete removal of the catalyst drivers and a reinstallation A) Run the uninstaller found in either the ATI driver folder found in the root of the C drive or in the control panel applet. If you are unable to do completely remove it from there, Driver Cleaner should aide you http://www.driverheaven.net/cleaner/ C) Reinstall the ATI or Omega drivers, whatever your preference is HTH

    The Sims 2

Welcome to the forum. Though you need to post in the correct sections. Your aspire comes with an S3 video card. Since that company is now long gone, the only people who will support it are third party, such as Acer. I doubt your drivers can support the requirements of the game. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/games/gameadvisor/default.mspx The above link should be able to give you a baseline for your machine and SIMS 2.

    Pagefile stutter

I didnt see this posted in the thread so BANG there she is :-) http://www.jsiinc.com/SUBQ/tip8000/rh8098.htm Freeware PageDfrg.exe defragments your PageFile, registry hives, and event logs. Personally, I would play with your video card setttings .... AGP speed, fast writes, AGP allocated memory, AGP driver, color depth, resolution and so on.

I agree with APK OS migration is messy ... and very difficult to bullet proof. I remember migrating 50 or so IBM P3 towers from windows 95 to 2000. Had to write the stuff so part time IT folk could do it. Bios upgrades, mem upgrades, ghost backup, automated scripts, profiles and the list went on and on. Very cool deal there adam. I'll checkout your work. I remember about a year ago playing with APK's registry cleaner software. That was some pretty sweet stuff. I wonder how it ever turned out.

Installing Server 2003 on PC instead of server

Quote: Regarding X:\i386\winnt32 /checkupgradeonly, would I used that from the Server 2003 CD before reformatting my HD to see if the hardware on the box I'm installing it on complies? Correct

Quote: Hmm, ds3circuit, did you have one too many Labatt Blues or did you accidently hit submit twice lol .... would you believe I am still getting used to the new forums? Gotta go back to work, otherwise I would think of a better excuse ... How does that Alan Jackson song go?? Ahhh yes, its 5 O'clock Somewhere
  16. LOL nice man ..... Easy on the P2P stuff. Other solutions include USB and Firewire pc to pc connections. Certainly more bandwidth than cat5e Dosfreak also brough up cat6 and gig-e. Another viable solution.

Installing Server 2003 on PC instead of server

Although most of the articles apply to win2000, I would suggest going through them http://labmice.techtarget.com/windows2000/install/dualboot.htm Quick answer: the system partition should be fat32. The boot partition for win2k3 should be ntfs. You will need ntfs if you wish to play with AD. You should be ok otherwise. No Dynamic Disks for you either. C: = WinME and WIN2K3 Boot. D: = Win2K3 System files. If you got more specific questions, feel free to fire away. Im sure you will get hit with quite a few posts. EDIT Almost forgot this X:\i386\winnt32 /checkupgradeonly To make sure all your devices are on the HCL. Better safe than sorry

I realize I havent posted in these forums for quite sometime but I did have some ideas to share. First. When did clutch get his MSMVP ? CONGRATS !! I wonder if he has had the chance to meet Darren, Deji, and Joe ...... Second. I didnt know that people from other sites were trolling in these forums .... its a shame ... script kiddies hehe. I remember when it happenned between neowin and activewin. Glad to see the management are more adult then there members. Second + 1. I remember this site when it was red and green and people were hacking their voodoo drivers to get them to work with 2000 Beta 3. Thats build 2085 or so, I am probably off by a few on the number. Finally. Everyone in these forums contributes. From the person who asks a question that makes the experts here rack their heads to the question that makes those said experts remember an archaic topic. In a dynamic busines such as ours, we will be the perpetual student. None of us are any better than the other, just more experiences in one subject. And Alex, like I said a year ago. I couldnt code myself out of a paper bag. Script ... yes .... but an actual non-vb app. HA!! LOL. Who wants to see a grown man cry I do have say this is one of the most professional forums on the net. Everyone should pat themeselves on the back for that. Oh and regarding the alcohol to maintain my sanity, http://www.labatt.com/ is damm good 8)

two nic in the same subnet

Quote: Hi! I write from italy and i hope my messagge is understandable. I have a windows 2000 server in a network. The server has two nic with ip address in the same subnet: 1 nic) 10.0.0.1 255.0.0.0 10.0.0.2 gateway 2 nic) 10.0.0.5 255.0.0.0 Both nic connect to a switch and the switch connects to a router adsl. I hoped that both nic will function but it function only one. See the route print in this page html. http://sitofree.com/tidweb/5.txt How can i do for make them to work together? (or what can I do for getting to work together? ) Thank you and i hope that help me Ciao Teaming NICS for port aggregation, load balancing, and/or fail over capabilities is something that should be hardware and not software dependent. Spanning tree should disable one of your ports on the switch to avoid routing loops.

VPN and accessing shares in my Network...

Thanks Alex and Adam. Its actually good to be back. Quote: He has - It's his OWN stuff here & I like and respect what he's done with it thusfar... needs a bit of work in the SEARCH function capacity imo, but other than that? Agreed .... In house applications are always the pride of any IT team. Im sure you, Phil, and the other coders couldnt agree more Quote: (I'd say my success rate has dropped to around 30% in fact on fixes on many of them... they're crazy-tough @ times, especially the last 3-6 months or so now! Heh, maybe? I'm just getting old!) Nah, no one is getting old .... just the technology. There are many variations of applications, directory implementations, user environments, and networking protocols. In my eyes, we have reached a certain point in IT. More people will need to be jack of all trades and less spe[censored]ts. Hell, if I was interviewing candidates for network administration positions, in the environments that I participate in, I would rather have a guy who can do exchange, AD, Sharepoint, etc .... then a guy who can only do exchange. Even if he is a guru within the subject. Perhaps when I move into companies that have more nodes then stars in the sky, my view will change ...... END OF RANT LOL .... so no you aint getting old APK, there is just toooo much to keep up with I have issues remembering what attributes and objects are different between AD and OpenDirectory lol Quote: his entails what? Dual NICS, NAT client (not sure on this part but it COULD help right?), ** Nods ** For a home environment, he made it rather "complex". It should be a single vlan. Whew, well that was a long one for me and yes my BS is almost complete .... ya know what they say about the light at the end of the tunnel.

Changing pagefile size in WINXP slows down bootup

Use bootvis to improve bootup and resume times. http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/12/2/12-2-1.shtml With regards to your swap file issue. I would suggest in defragmenting your HD and pagefile. http://www.pureperformance.com/js/showtip.asp?id=22 Other thoughts ... is UDMA enabled on the drive? Are you using intel ata drivers or the default ones from MS? If you need to monitor your pagefile when fully booted, use this http://billsway.com/notes%5Fpublic/WinXP%5FTweaks/ Anything in the event viewer logs? Im sure one of the other guys will add mucho tweaks
