    You should not have any problems with your hardware. I to have been a devoted user since it first appeared...it was rough at first, but they have certainly earned great respect from many users around the world. I do think that some of the newer packages...Glibc, Gcc, etc..may cause problems with older programs and games. I do know that WineX doesn't like it at all. But this is part of moving on and keeping up with the latest flavors. I installed 9.1 last night and so far.

    Followup: I have been seeing people posting about having problems with the installation, not sure why. I would recommend trying a differ mirror site. I got my images from ftp://fr2.rpmfind.net/linux/Mandrake-iso/ and everything ran great for me, unlike the betas and RC's.

    Looks good to me, if possible, I would compress everything on the CD to make the transfer quicker. You may also want to (if possible) mount the contenst of the CD as "#mount -t filesystemtype /path/to/sscdcontents /mnt/cdrom", then run the the export command, "export SETUP_CDROM=/mnt/cdrom". If this works, you will have less room for problems, vice trying to install from just any direcory, because the install scripts will probably be looking for an actual CDRom Drive. The installer is GUI based, so you may have to also export the display back to your local terminal, unless you already have this setup to do so. Good Luck.

    Warning: It still doesn't work if you are using any of the newer libraries. Since I moved up to Mandrake 9.1, WineX has stopped running all together. Appearently those using Debian, SuSE with these same libraries, will have problems as well. Glibc 2.3.x breaks WineX.

    It all comes down to what your requirements are, and what your personal preferences are. I was a heavy Slackware user because of my work, but when I am at home, I use Mandrake 9.0, because I can easily install and configure all the hardware to required to do online gaming natively in linux. My stress relief laugh

    Yes, I forgot to add that if you have not created the partitions for Linux already, then you will have to use Partition Magic to do so. You will have to resize the XP/NTFS Partition, then set aside how much you want for Linux. Then convert the filesystem from NTFS to ext3 for now. You can change it to Journalised when you install linux. I find life so much easier using 1 Hard drive for Windows, and 1 for Linux...using removable trays. If you feel more comfortable just learning the steps of the installation on your laptop, you can do that to, until you feel you know the steps involved with the installation.

    You don't have to Reinstall XP, you should only have to install linux. Why Journalised Filesystem ? Because it recovers better and faster from systems crashes. When you start your installation, just point it to the 20gig partition you gave it initially, then break it down into the the 3 partitions that I stated above. You can use the laptop if you would like, but I can't tell you honestly wether or not Mandrake will support all of the Hardware. Giving 5 gigs to Mandrake is kinda tight, the full install is about 3-4 Gigs depending on the installation type you choose.

    You have to tell linux exactly what kind of partition you are setting up. If you are giving a partition of around 20Gigs, you will need these options set;

     

    1. /boot (HD over 12 Gigs, you have to set this slice) = 120-150 Megs, Journalized Filesystem.

    2. /swap (A must) = Double the amount of RAM you have, you should set it to less if over 256 Megs of RAM.

    3. /root = Remainder of Space, and again use the Journalized Filesystem.

     

    You will only be able to mount your XP partitions as ReadOnly, if you are using NTFS.

     

    The easiest way to dual boot is to do the following;

     

    1. Install XP,

    2. Install Mandrake, but when it prompts you to use boot diskette, say YES, and

    3. When it prompts you to use a boot loader, (eg. Lilo, Grub..) say NO.

     

    Use the boot diskette when you wish to load Linux. That was how I did it for years, until I made the switch over to Linux perminently. I got tired of farting around with boot loaders and running differ OSes. Hope this helps.

    Don't quote me on this but I thing Urban Terror MOD for Q3A is the equivalant of HL CS. I know there are alot of MODS for Q3A, but Urban Terror is the one that strikes me as being the closest. As for any Dedicated Servers games, it should just be a matter of running it in a terminal window. For Example I have created sripts for starting all mine up, then I just create shortcuts on my desktop. Here is one for UT2003 TDM that I use;

    cd /usr/local/games/ut2003/

    ./ucc server DM-Antalus?game=XGame.XTeamMatch?mutator=UnrealGame.MutLowGrav?weaponstay=true?translocator=false?ff=0?Gamespeed=130?maxplayers=10?minplayers=7?spectators=0?timelimit=20?Fraglimit=50?AdminName=-=REL!c2K=-?Adminpassword=PaSSwOrD ini=ut2003tdm.ini log=ut2003tdm.log

     

    It will vary because of Game differences, you just have to do some reading and it should tell you how to started a dedicated game. Hope this Helps.

    Just thought I would add this, it is very limited.

     

    Q. Can Gaim send files?

     

    A. TOC can, in a limited way, and OSCAR can send files over AIM in CVS. Most protocols are capable of it, but Gaim hasn't implemented anything yet.

     

    Q. When will file transfer be supported? Is it being worked on?

     

    A. File transfer is currently being worked on in CVS. It will be released when it is ready, and no sooner. Do not ask for a more precise timeline. Currently it is only being worked on for AIM, MSN, Jabber and IRC. Get CVS and submit a patch using the generic file transfer api in Gaim if you would like it for another protocol.

    I pretty much use most of the messanger clients in linux, GAIM = multiple logons, but no ability to transfer files. AMSN = single client, file transfers, very fast, automatically downloads buddy list from MSN server. LICQ = Just plain ol narly like it's ICQ cousin, you never know how it is going to behave from one day to the next, and you have manually add buddies..

    It all comes down to preference and what you do the most off. I usually sit in GAIM most of the time until someone talks to me, then I switch to AMSN for file transfers laugh

    I have never come by this problem, and I have been running WineX since the first days, both CVS and RPM. I have been running HL, CS, DMC...some FF, and even Op4. Opposing Force takes a few more steps to get running, but I have been playing on Veraxx since my CLAN Days.

    WineX 3.0 will be released shortly, which is promising to offer better support for some of the newer Titles, but I am sure there will be a whole slew of new bugs to come with it.

    Regarding Wine, I can't help you with that much, but if you were to install Winex CVS I can help you. Another option is that can either pay for a one year subscription, which is what I did, then you can download all the RPM packages you want from the URL below. It would be easier for you over all. No I am not a sales rep or anything, but because you are a new to linux, it would just be easier for you overall.

    First off, yes there is a linux native port of both Quake 3 Arena and Team Arena Add-on, see http://www.lokigames.com/ and Tuxgames to order them, I am running both, and they rock.

    Secondly make sure you are using a valid store bought CD Key, or the servers will boot you off, I am not saying that you are running downloaded software, but this happened to me with RTCW. Some jack ass, using a keygen in Windows, ended up stealing my damn store keys on me. I basically wasted 50 bucks for nothing.

    I got passed the time experation, but backing my Calendar Date to 2002 smile The server is now back up and running online, and I have downloaded every Custom Map I could find for Coop. Now I just have to figure out how to get them to run on a dedicated without Serious Runner and Windows.
