    Connecting to a new domain

Here's what I would try: 1. Dejoin it from the old domain 2. Delete the computer account on the new domain 3. Login to the local PC (should be a member of Workgroup, or similar) 4. Join new domain, enter domain admin credentials when prompted (A new computer account will automatically be created, this is why it's important to delete the old account) 5. Restart, attempt login Also may be worthwhile to make a note if you have two DHCP servers or scopes to see what your IP address is, to make sure it's receiving as expected.

    The Dell TaskManager :(

No problem, it's not a very obvious fix. Too bad Microsoft didn't add a context menu or a way via a button to show/hide the tabs.

Doom 3 compatability issues, openGL shuts down...

    Is that a Geforce2 MX400 or a Geforce4 MX440? It's likely that neither one will run Doom 3 acceptably.

    Promise Controller Problem?

What SP do you have installed? SP3 for 2000 had some issues with some versions of Promise controllers for me. Reverting (at the time) to SP2 completely solved that problem. It's possible that newer drivers/firmware may resolve that issue, though.

    Windows 2003 Server Activation Key

Or, if you have a volume license agreement, you may contact your Microsoft account manager for assistance verifying your purchase(s) and activating your installation. Of course, if you're looking for assistance defeating activation measures so you may continue to run your unlicensed version of Windows Server 2003, you'll never get that here.

    Local volume search engine?

I'm looking for a search engine for a local PC/hard drive that can search and index in a similar manner to Lookout. I'm aware of the indexing service, but it seems only accessable via a MMC template. Ideally, it would be free (open source an extra plus), and be fully capiable of searching contents/keywords for most all common document files, such as Excel, Word, Adobe PDF, etc. TIA!

Filehand search does a ranking on the result, and lets you optionally view more or less of the context where the result was found. If you have about 30-60 minutes, you should download it, and try it out, that will be far better than I could ever explain how useful it is.

    Local volume search engine?

May as well add here that Google has released a beta version of their Google Desktop Search. Supported files: Outlook / Outlook Express Word AOL Instant Messenger (prior conversations) Excel Internet Explorer (history, cached pages, etc.) PowerPoint Text Again, once this product matures, it will likely be the best, at least until a SQL-based FS becomes a reality...?

You may refer to my other thread here about alternatives, although once the Google product matures, it will likely be crowned king.

You have to join by IP. If you are hosting a game then you will need to open some ports in your firewall (or router, if applicable). Follow these guidelines for more information.

  21. You could go into the Security Center and manually set the options to prevent notifications, but you may as well just stop and disable the Security Center service. You can access the services by running services.msc.

Should we get a Win2K3 Server?

A few other comments, as you replied while I was typing my last message... While you can configure SBS using mostly wizards, the other tools should still be available either via command-line or as MMC templates. If you have doubts about SBS 2003, here's the best solution: order a trial copy from Microsoft here. It's good for 120 (or maybe 180...?) days and only costs about $15.00. Also, SBS 2003 includes an Outlook 2003 license with each CAL, so that's an added value. [edit] Just noticed that the order link is dead. I think I have a few extra unopened eval copies at home, if you're really interested I'll drop one in the mail to you. Note that it's the Microsoft Partner kit, with some tools for selling as well. [/edit]

Should we get a Win2K3 Server?

Yep, SBS 2003 would be a great fit. Although, as AndyFair mentioned, if you plan to use this as a RADIUS server, you'll want a good firewall. Don't forget that you'll need to buy some CALs, too. You can get them as per-device (computer/laptop/PDA, etc.) or per-user. 75 is the maximum number of concurrent authenticated users. Note that if you run a web server (IIS) on this server, assuming you use the anonymous account, this wouldn't impact the user limitation of SBS 2003. Best of all is the price for SBS. Last time I looked (shortly after the launch) it was about $600 OEM. Add to that some CALs, and server hardware (the Dell 2650 is GREAT) and you'll be spending about $3k or so, but you should be set for quite some time, until you outgrow that system. Don't forget to plan good backup strategies, either, you may want to look at a Dell PowerVault LTO tape drive (I have the 100/200GB drive here). Hope this helps, let us know.

    Lagging Network

The computer with the cable/DSL modem (PC1) shouldn't be the DNS server for either computer, unless you're running BIND or maintaining a hosts file. Use the DNS server(s) assigned by your ISP. PC1 needs a default gateway. Do you have the SP2 (or another) firewall installed? Is it properly configured? Have you tried disabling it momentarily to see if communications resume as expected? If you let DHCP assign the IP addresses what do you recieve on each PC?
