    Cpu lagging preformance, please help!

OK, I wonder if maybe some filesystem issues are occuring, try this and see if indeed there are any and then a fix for this issue. Click on the Windows Start button then select RUN. In the OPEN line type in cmd as in command and then click the OK button. A command shell window will appear, type in the following command without any switches, chkdsk and press the ENTER key. It will run chkdsk in READ only mode but it will tell you if any errors were found and to run the command again with the /F switch, please do this if neccessary and press the Y key to schedule on a reboot, then reboot the machine and see if this fixes the issue or not. You can also use the /R switch to test the unallocated space too but it will take longer to scan as it will check the entire partition.

    Recent Spammers

I've noticed in the past couple of weeks a spate of iPod/iPhone spammers, must be some real humans behind these bots or is there more to this ???

    Broadband hardware compatible with Linux?

You mean a USB Mobile Adapter for a Wireless service like from Verizon or ATT correct ??? As far as I know these are only Windows compatible, perhaps they have some Mac support now. So what distro of *nix are you running on that Asus machine ??? Asus only seems to indicate some of their models come with XP Home and nothing about the Linux Distro they use, I suppose they leave that up to the user

    Red alert 1 install help

Have you looked at this thread yet ??? Then there are these search results from Google I purchased the repacked Command and Conquer - The First Decade as it's been patched and tested to work on XP just fine so I didn't have any of these issues when trying to install the initial release version of RA1. Are you getting any error messages when attempting to run the install/setup app ???

    edit MBR

If you open the cmd prompt and type in bcdedit it will provide the current boot manager information for you. You can add a store by using the bcedit /create option but you need to find the partitions drive letter for Vista first. If you open Drive Management under Adminstrative Tools you can easily see what letters are assigned to which drives.
  10. Are these JETDIRECT printers ??? Most likely there are and you do have them setup in CUPS correct ??? I run setup from the command prompt and select Printer Configuration. When setting up the printers you need to use the JETDIRECT printer type. You need to setup the IP address and the port, usually 9100 on JETDIRECT printers. After configuring and saving, I like to restart the service by typing in service cups restart.

Not able to play games at higher graphics options

You're welcome, another good card to look at is the ATi Radeon HD4770, this is a current generation GPU and can be had at a decent price of aroung $120 or so.

Not able to play games at higher graphics options

Well for one, I wouldn't have purchased a new computer with only a 7300SE GPU installed, it really doesn't have the power you need for higher resolution gaming with advanced effects like shadowing enabled. This GPU is three generations old already and really has limitations on it's graphical power, especially when enabling game shadows and effects. A very good previous generation card is the 9800GTX+, but you will want a good quality PS Unit of something like 500 watts or better with at least a single PCIe power connector. The CPU should be more then enough and the only part that was mismatched on this platform seems to be the graphics card.

    DosBox v0.73 Released

Has anybody tried out the new build yet ??? Seems faster then previous builds and I've now noticed the new video emulation modes. You can emulate a straight, generic VGA or one of the many different types of VGA cards that were out in the day like the Tseng Labs ET3000 or ET4000 GPU's, well before they were called GPU's that is to say I installed some older dos games such as the classic Interplay RPG compilations, these were the re-released Gold Box series games from SSI/Interplay and such like Hillsfar, Pools of Radiance and the Eye of the Beholder series. Fun to mess around with some of these titles but sometimes you can still have sound issues even if you manually setup the sound card IRQ and DMA channels.

AMD Phenom ][ Model 955 CPU

Has anybody noticed these new CPU's reporting their core frequency different to the OS ??? I just upgraded my Phenom Model 9850 to this new CPU and now both Vista and Windows 7 reports a core speed of 800MHz instead of 3.2GHz. The BIOS had already been updated and reports it properly, the ID string for both OS's shows the correct AMD Phenom ][ Model 955 in the registry for all four cpu cores. The interesting thing is that CPUz shows a core speed of 800.1MHz x 4 which would come out to 3.2GHz, but why is it reporting it this way instead of the overall CPU speed ??? Am I missing something or what ??? Also, AMD doesn't appear to have any CPU drivers for either Vista and Windows 7, I wouldn't think this has anything to do with it as it's probable that Microsoft has already included the proper drivers out of the box. The worst part is the very low CPU Index Score from both of these OS's, worse with Windows 7 vs. Vista but not by much. It's sad that the older CPU reports as a 2.5GHz model and it's index scoring is much higher. Any ideas ???

AMD Phenom ][ Model 955 CPU

Resolved this matter with a BIOS update, I hadn't noticed it when I posted this thread. I think it was just the older BIOS not properly identifying the CPU info properly to the OS. No change in the CPU speed and the Windows Index went way up

    Best firewall/antivirus/antispyware combo

Here is my combo that I've been using for a while now: Firewall, Hardware based only. I use a pfsense router built out of an older thin client made by Maxterm called the MaxSpeed 8300. I used a new 1GB CF Drive and then an external USB optical to install the full version of this OS based on FreeBSD. anti-Spyware/Malware, Spybot Search and Destroy and Spywareblaster, mostly for the blacklists and the realtime monitoring. Also they seem to work very well with Windows 7 too. anti-Virus, AVG Free, you really don't need anymore then this app and it also works on Windows 7.
  18. Which Windows OS are you running, I'm assuming XP but wanted to make sure. Also, if you click on the START button and then select RUN and at the Open line type in dxdiag and click OK, does this bring up the DirectX Diagnostic Tool ??? If so, what version does it show ??? Then the final thing is to look at Display Tab and see what graphics chipset you have, if it's an onboard/igp type, you are out of luck until you get a hardware graphics card installed into you machine.

    Gigabit Ethernet: Cat 5/5e/6

So far I've not had any issues using any of my CAT5e cabling to enable 1gb either. I have a mix of both CAT5e and CAT6 cabling now and there doesn't seem to be an ill effects....
  20. So here are the details of what I've done and tested so far to attempt to figure out this issue, here are the System Specs: Biostar TA790GXB A2+ Motherboard AMD Phenom, Model 980 BE CPU, Stock Heatsink/Fan 4 x 2GB, Corsair DDR2/800MHz DIMM Modules Antec True Power 550 Watt PS Unit 2 x 36GB, WD, Raptor HDD's in Single Drive Mode 1 x 750GB Seagate HDD 1 x Lite On DVD-RW Optical Drive, IDE Interface 1 x Lite On DVD-RW Optical Drive, SATA Interface I'm using the onboard IGP which happens to be the Radeon HD3300 onboard using shared memory. The issue happened on Windows 7, RC1 as well so that is when I decided to reformat the HDD and install XP Pro, 64-bit Edition just in case. Under XP I get a 0x9C Save Dump message but it says Bugcheck, when I look up this error on the MS Knowledge Base it seems to indicate a Machine Check error. One of the possible issues is graphics card and power supply. I immediately thought of the ram so I grabbed my UBCD and booted up Memtest and let it run overnight. 5 passes and no errors. Today I started up the Marisanne Prime test and it found errors, I will post some of the error.txt file it creates to see if these are related to the fact it's a pretty new CPU or is it really an issue with the CPU itself or possibly the motherboard. It is a brand new motherboard and does have the latest BIOS installed. I can somewhat duplicate the spontaneous reboot by viewing some videos, this seems to indicate an issue with the onboard graphics would it not ??? Any tips or tricks would be appreciated, thanks

Windows XP Pro 64-bit Edtition BSOD

Ok, I've updated to the latest BIOS rev from the Global website and not from the US website. I also had to clear the CMOS after it rebooted due to a hang at boot time. After adjusting the settings accordingly, I went ahead and made my tweaks to the RAM Voltage and noticed that the DIMM slot assignments for this motherboard were not clearly defined until I looked at the manual and the slots themselves. I was always thinking that the same colored slots were int the same channel, well not on this motherboard I had mismatched memory in that they were purchased at a different time but still the same specs, sometimes there is a small timing difference that can cause strange behavior if the channels are not matched properly.... So far so good....

Windows XP Pro 64-bit Edtition BSOD

@Danleff, I just grabbed that BIOS update, had to go to their GLOBAL site instead of the US site

Windows XP Pro 64-bit Edtition BSOD

Thanks for the reply Danleff, I will look at the CPU Utility, but isn't this the same that AMD provides on their site ??? If so, I've already installed it. I may have come across a solution, I changed the BIOS under the T-Series menu from NORMAL to Manual Overclocking and adjusted the RAM Voltage from the default of 1.8v to 1.95v, the next step up. So far so good (knocks on formica).... I'm thinking it could be an issue with the fact I'm using 4 x 2GB Ram Modules, maybe they need the extra juice so to speak. So you say there is also a bios dated 6/03/09 ??? I didn't see but the one from January, I will look again... As for the Graphics, I was thinking of installing one of those nice ATi Radeon HD4770's but I'm waiting for Newegg to get the Asus model back into stock at $100
  24. I purchased a Seagate Free Agent External USB, 1.5TB HDD. I really needed some extra storage space and CostCo had them for cheap
