upgrade to xp and machine doesnt turn off :(

Warning: this may hose your machine but probably won't. Make sure ACPI is enabled. (Check mobo manual see if it has ACPI and or enable ACPI in bios if it is currently disabled) if you have acpi enabled you can do this to enable it. Goto device manager>computer> standard pc Upgrade the driver to "acpi uniprocessor pc" and reboot. Reboot and windows will freak out and find all of your drivers again, and most llikely all will be well.
  2. " free to use (excepting sale actions" From reading this, I believed it to mean that they can not be used for sale, as in for music that is for sale. So you are just saying they can only be made into musc then sold, just sold as they are as samples? Sweet deal if so.

How WinXP Pro deals with Profiles.

After imaging, run newsid.exe from www.sysinternals.com. it will give every post imaged computer a new random sid, plus a new computer name is desired (and usually is when imaging.) Sysprep makes you enter key and or activate again; newsid is 1 000 000 times better.
  4. A suggestion. Include licensing terms witht he samples, and have them divided into 2 folders in the rar. In one folder, allow them to be used in music for sale, provided you get the credit on the CD insert or readme if compressed internet audio sale, with a link to your website. In the other folder have samples that must be outright purchased for commercail use.

    Wireless Network

    1) Disable DHCP on the WAP, let ICS on the dialup machine hand out IP addresses. yo will have to change the WAP IP address to be compatible with ICS addressing, 192.168.0.x with subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. 2) Set ICS on the dialup machine (right click network connection, sharing tab>share this conection) 3) install wifi nic drivers in all machines (set for infrastructer mode) 4) configure passwords and wep/WPA (recommend WPA if available) 5) turn on all pc's, and you are done. internet will now work on all of them.
  6. Currently running nt4 with echange 5.5. Going to upgrade to server 2000 or 2003, with newest exchange. Should i upgrade the echange server, or the OS first? (I will image the machine before i touch it, so no need to worry about reloads from scratch, if all hell breaks loose that's what i will do)
  7. 150 mailboxes. I'd like to avoid a fresh reload if possible!
  8. Thanks. That's very useful information.
  9. My 2k DC forest root, 2 nics set with static IP's. My 2k member server is the dhcp box for the ntwork. I check it's dhcp config and I see the primary DC (with pdc emultaion) has 10 IP address leases. ?? What culd cause this?of note: I disabled the routing and remote access service, and it no longer grabs IP addresses from the DHCP serer. Also of note: None of the addresses it's listed as grabbbing is pingable.
  10. here is what is strange. RRas was not configured to do anything, this was a freshly instaled server 9 months ago, and runs IIS and AD, and that's it. The routing and remote access service was running by default but unconfigured. This machine also is not the DHCP server, it is the only 2k AD controller, the 2k standalone is doing the DHCP duties. As soon I as did disable RRAS and refreched the IP leases the 10 addresses fir this disappeared. Perhaps more to add to this is i'm getting duplicate name on the network error too, not sure why as there is no duplicate. Edit: i disabled netbios over TCP/IP and the duplicate name error went away. (netbeui is installed for file and authentication access.
  11. I have one win2k forest root DC, 1 NT 4 bdc, and one 2000 member server. I wish to make the 2000 member server a dmoain controller (no problem i know) But how can I make it the new forst root? The old forest root is due to be retired pretty quick. The NT4 BDC will sit there doing not much of anyhthing except letting users log in and is fine just the way it is. (Obviously this is mixed mode)

  14. here is the deal. I have one lan adapter in my pc. It is 192.168.0.1. My internet nic is instaled, i try to enable ICS and i keep getting error 783 : The adapter specified is not present or non funtioning blah blah ICS cannot be enabled. MS knowledge base simply says " another nic somewhere on the lan has 192.168.0.1" but this is not how it currently is, the ICS has the .1 address right now. WTF do I do to fix this? here is relevent info. When I run nat32 config, it shows a non connected adapter which is unchoosable. I think ICS is tyring to bind to this non connected adapter. (the non connected adapter is the same nic that's in there now, but I uninstaled and reinstaled the driver for it a little bit ago) I went into device manager and "show hidden devices" And I culd not see it in there to remove it, just the one real working nic that's in there. This is driving me crazy as my main rig gets its internet through the ICS machine, so I am dialing up now.
  15. Download dosbox and you will be good to go.

    HyperThreading: HyperProblem!

For the record, I am currently encoding a 352,480 mpeg2 file with an smp capable program. Both CPU's at 70% and realtime. Computer is runing smooth. Then i fired up Prince of persia sands of time while encoding, and IT was smooth as silk. I love my dual rig. ive seen people with 1 p4 2.4 be virtually unusable while using some encoders with default priority even, but virtually unusable I mean sluggish as hell.

    That's It Getting a MAC!!!

I won't support a company that wont sell you a cpu or a motherboard. Apple's policies are rediculous. They cut supplies off from companies that sell their hardware. It ain't right.

    HyperThreading: HyperProblem!

I too have thought the "realtime bad never use" situation from what I have read. i however have a true Dual cpu rig. I encode alot of Divx and DVD (mpeg2) Guess Ill set my encoders to realtime and see how much extra speed I get. Currently one encoder I use only eats about 70% of both my cpu's, i wish it would use more. Hopefully realtime will help in this case. The other encoder I use uses both cpu's 100%, but it takes longer (inefficient encoding) and it stays at 100% both chips when set to low priority, although my machine is very responsive even when it's at 100% both. ind of like the way prime95 makes my cpus go to 100%, yet the machine remains totally responsive. Wwhat causes this behavior? (great responsiveness even at 100% use) ?
  19. Search google for a program called "Folder guard" with it you can hide the folder, even if they stop the folder guard process they wont be able to see the folder, let alone run it.

    Partition magic question

you are prolly sol. All you can try is install P<Magic on another pc that not server 2003, and make a bootdisk from there. PMgic may see that it is a server though and simply refuse to run just cause they want the cash for Powerquest "volume manager" their server partition magic.
  21. Ive not used this, but it seems to me if the dongle is in place, then it should. The dongle is in between and transparent to the hardware I assume, which would allow all low level disk access to be performed. In this case however I would guess the resultant data would not be encrypted anymore as ghost wouyld see the unprotected data. However, I can't be sure, not used one. If you wanna know what will happen, and not spend any $$ testing this, make an image using "Partimage" It is a free drive imaging tool and uses linux as its engine. you can download a bootable ISO (~50 MB) that runs only partimage. Image away and see what happens. Partimage will also let you do a true sector by sector of unknown filesystems too, so you culd also make an image without the dongle on it and have a protected encrypted image file that if someone restored the image to a drive they would be SOL, but would still work for you with dongle. (I noticed ghost is rather weak with unsupported filesystems, even with -IA switch and "force sector copy" it would not image a mac drive for instance.)
  22. Alright let's get some competition for the VP6 sale here! P3 800x2( From retail box with retail HSF), 133 Mhz FSB,one had 2 year use, 1 had 3 years use, (3 year manufactures warranty probably expired now) this would be a great thing as a backup for anybody that buys A vp6 and wants a handy spare..... Abit VP6 Dual Processor mobo. (Read the reviews this is an excellent motherboard) 4 IDE controllers for max of 8 IDE devices, 2 are ata 100/raid capable. It has been used since November 2002 until present. 256 MB PC 133 SDRam (Generic but ran without issues). 1x 256. I don't believe they are rated cas2 but I have run them cas 2 for the entire 2 years without issues. if any other components are needed it can be worked out (video, lan cd/dvd rom etc) For the board chips and ram I would like $250.00 firm. First to offer this price gets it. I'm selling it because I Bought my new Dual Processor AMD Athlon MP 2600+ rig and since it's stable I've no need for the intel. (Currently using it to watch divx movies with TV out and one CPU sitting there going to waste.) I guarentee it not to be dead on arrival (ship it back within 7 days of receiving it for money back, if for some reason it's faulty) , I just ask that you hook it up and test it to be working within 7 days of receiving it.
  23. Post edited, price inserted, bump.

    RAID1 storage most reliable?

Quote: I've used the RAID Zero solution under XP Pro and it works just fine for my general purpose data, stuff I wouldn't die over losing lol, from where I sit, I will die from losing anything at all. Almsot a terrabyte of data on my machines, and not enough $$$ to have backup of it all.

    getting hyperthreading to work

Easy peezy that is. here how to do it. 1) make sure HT is enabled in bios. Dont worry, windows will still boot, but only see 1 cpu. Goto device manager>computer. Uograde the driver for "ACPI uniprocessor pc" force the driver for "ACPI multiprocessor PC" Note that this may cause issues, but on my motherboard it worked fine, so give it a shot, nothing to lose in trying. After you reboot windows will freak out and find all your hardware again, so have your drivers handy just in case. Most of the time this works just fine.
