  1. ive been using my hosts file to block bad stuff. For example I have blocked www.baddomain.com by routing to 127.0.0.1 I would like to route *.baddomain.com to 127.0.0.1 I tried this with a ping hgjtdgvje.baddomain.com and the real ip resolved. Is there a way to do it?

make a wildcrd in hosts file? possible?

I didnt mention it but I did also block baddomain.com and grsgreger.baddomain.com still resolved.
  5. Did she install dialup software provided by her ISP? This could be the culprit. Networkwise shouldnt matter. the only thing different that I am aware of is this: Netbios over IP is disabled by default on dialup, and the dialup becaomes the default gateway.

    GPEDIT HELL!!!

Samba on linux now can emulate a windows active directory. However I have never used it and know not if it can set group policy. Gotta praise microsoft for their ingenuity. they want you to buy 400 Cal's.

Can boot 2K from floppy. Need to make drive bootable

Easy peeze. Boot from the windows 2000 cd, and choose emergency rpair (not recovery console) This will fix it right up, provided windows is on c:.

    Gotta Love Linux

Almost all modems you seein stores do requir dirvers now as they are software modems. If no linux software written for them you are SOL. For best results you need a true hardware modem. (Not too cheap) then it will 100% of the time work.

You install the app and crreate a pc, choose how much ram to give it and how many hard drives it will have, cd rom nic etc. then you strat the pc in a window, "mr. Bios" kicks in and if no OS is loaded you get system disk error. Mount an iso of an OS, or a floppy image file (dos etc), or stick in an actual cd rom or actual floppy, and install your OS. this would be a miraclulous program for web developers. You can install a trim gig o so install of windows, copy the vpc hard drive file multiple times, and in each boot install a different version of IE. With enough ram/CPU you can run as many virtual pc's as you wish at the same time. the hard drive file may also be configured as undoable, so yo can load, mess with settings/software/fun viruses for giggles, then close and let it undo the changes. It installs a network driver and binds to your nics, and through this driver becomes a real pc on the network, if you enable the virtual sswitch and virtual nic. The virtual pc's hardawre is licensed rom code from many sources and was designed to be the most compatible for all operating systems. For example, the virtual pc's soundcard is a soundblaster 16, video is an S3 trio 694. The virtual pc can tap into the com ports and parallel port just fine. I onced needed windows 98 to move data in/out the parallel port (no 2000 suport for the transfer software I was using) and the win98 vpc handled the job nicely. Also works great for a game that i ant get to work on Windows 2000 (Magic the gathering duels of the planeswalkers with spells of the ancients expansion.

    Domain Accounts Corrupting

Is this a native or mixed mode domain? Did the clients join the "pdc emultaor" type of domain, or the windows 2000 type domoain? (Win2k specifically is capable of joinig the nt 4 domain emulator, not sure if XP can or not) the smb(server message block) error sounds like its joining the domain via netbios and not dns is why I ask, and the nt 4 pdc emulation does it this way. Try this: disable netbios over ip and makje sure no netbeui is there. this way there is no netbios interaction. Make sure dns server info is set right on clients and see if you can do it right then. To disable netbios over ip goto advanced tcpip properties>wins tab>DISABLE netbios over ip.

    Dead Spanned Volume

With a spanned volume you cannot remove a driv and have it work. You must grab whatever data you can off it. you ust have data on tape or something, no sane person would run a 1 TB span without some extra good backups.........

Excluding items from recent program list

Another way that i have used in the past, just Deny the "everyone" group full control the "recent" folder. Then nothing can read or write to it. If XP home, boot to safe mode to get the full NTFS permissions.
  17. you can use system ram and benefit, but you need special configuration. i tried before "ramdisk nt" it has an option to use excluded ram. this means, windows doe snot know the other ram is there, say exclude 512 ram and kep 512 live. windows wont know the ram s there, but it will be a drive letter, and ready for swapfile. to generally iuse a pagefiule for swapfile, the problem is windows sees the paged ram as being used ram, which makes it think most of the ram is used to it will page even more. got it? you need to use excluded ram to have this work. ramdisknt does it quite well. 92k/xp support too of course.

"Security" isn't working in XP like it was in 2k

Are you rning XP home edition? they took it out. To get it back, merely boot into safe mode, and the security tab wil reappear for file and folder permisisons.
  19. I did not properly read your post before. If they have the same hardware, merely syspres the machine before you make your image, or, even better IMO, goto www.sysinternals.com download NEWSID and skip the sysprepping, run NEWSID after you restore the image to a pc, and before you conect it to the network. If you want to rollout images for FREE (ghost costs plenty) check out Partimage at sourceforge.

help! loaded 9x driver on 2000

Go to the reciovery console (boot off the cd choose repair, console) Type listsvc press enter this will list all the enabed drivers and services find the one you need to kill (hopefully the name will make sense to you, something like umaxblahblah Type disable umaxblahblah for each one you think is rerlated to the scanner also disable the scanning service whatever its called, scanning imaging or whatever. then boot windows Boot windows and see if you can uninstall the driver then. If you cant reenable the scanner service in windows and hope that you are fixed. Another option is to restore your original registry. (it will be from when you installed and most of your software will break) in windows\repair from revocery console copy this files called default, sam, security, software, system, (no extensions) and copy it to \windows\system32\config

    Question about port 80

it should not be listening on your workstations. To get rid of it, you have to figure out what software opened port 80.

IIS 5+ won't respont to "localhost" or 127.0.0.1..

Did you REALLY get a 404? Or are you being generic? a 404 means the webserver is responding....... and if it responds it should give you the default document....... So was it a 404, or a nbasic "page cannot be displayed"?
