Connecting 2 machines in a home lan

I would not recommend disabling simple file sharing unless you are already familiar with NT-style ACL's. If you are not stop and read up on them first. I would advise you to leave simple file sharing enabled. What this does is makes it so that anytime someone tries to access your files over the network they authenticate automatically against the guest account. This is also part of the reason that you can't connect to the admin shares on the box(guest account not having admin access). All you should have to do is create a share and allow it to be connected to over the network. I would also highly not recommend sharing out your C drive.
  2. This might help if someone does this again, however it will still require some reading on their part. First, you must realize that group policy is nothing more than a registry editor with a GUI and some added explanations. So anything that you can set there can be unset via the proper registry key. Check this link, which is specifically on disabling run keys in the registry: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/tec...entry/93792.asp or you can go here for a slightly broader view: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/tec...entry/GPRef.asp

As for speed, bootup and power features work much better in XP than they do on 2K and it is extremely evident on a laptop, hibernate functionality especially. As for XP being a resource hog, turn off the candy coated GUI. I really like 2k, still running it on my desktop. However, I have an older laptop, PII 366 w/ 224 MB of RAM and have run both 2k and XP and on the lappy, XP spanks 2K in both features and usability. Oh, and how can I forget, cleartype, which was made for LCD's to begin with.
  4. I'd be pretty hard pressed to find many situations where I'd recommend 2k Pro over XP for a laptop. Desktop you could go either way, but for a laptop, XP is more often than not the better bet. With the specs you have there, I'd say XP.
  5. Anyone get this to work? I can get it working using the Windows scanning wizard, but GOD that sucks. BTW it is connected via the SCSI interface, not that it should make a difference. I have a multiboot setup and it works fine in 2000, 2000 Server, and XP. I can't get it to recognize it as a TWAIN source no matter what I do. This same scanner worked just fine under Windows XP. I have tried both the 5.53 and 5.71 versions of TWAIN available from Epson. Anyone have some ideas? suggestions?

    inaccesible_boot_device

Try the steps listed here, especially if you have an LS-120 drive installed. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;126423 If that one does not work for you, this one is a bit more generic: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=122926 Are you unable to boot and install off the CD for some reason? It's faster and I don't think you'll have that error.
  7. Empty your browser cache and then go back and try again.

    Invalid boot.ini file

Videobruce, It seems that the file you posted looks correct, assuming that your OS is the primary master drive in your system. Can you check the permissions on that file and post them? Specifically, I am wondering if system has full control.

    help bypass win2000logon

You can't bypass it. What happened to cause you to want to do this? Lost password? There are ways to reset it. Just want to autologin? There are ways to accomplish this as well.

    Deletion of old user folder

Quote: I recently reinstalled WinXP over an older install and found that my old user directory under 'Documents and Settings' was till there after the rebuild. Problem is I can no longer open/explore/delete this directory and I want to get rid of it. You could simply reuse your old profile, complete with a lot of settings if you'd like rather than just get rid of it. However, to answer your question, what you need to do is first make sure that under folder options that simple file sharing is NOT enabled if XP Pro. If XP home, you will have to boot into safe mode to do this. You have to be logged in as an user with admin rights to do the following. Now, if you right click on the folder and choose properties, then go to the security tab. Then choose advanced. Go to the owner tab and change owner to the currently logged in user. Now you can set permissions, give yourself full control and then delete the folder. Let me know if this helps; if not I've got one more thing to try.

How can we include the raid drivers in the existing OS files so that the system will boot properly when we switch to the ghosted raid drive ? Is this actually feasible? Shutdown your server, install the Promise board and on the next reboot install the drivers as you normally would for new hardware. Now Ghost the drive, the drivers are now loaded for you. Now, the Promise controller should make the RAID array appear as just one drive, however I do not have experience with Ghost on RAID. One thing to keep in mind though is that the boot.ini file may need to be modified, so you may want to create an NT boot floppy so that you can modify this as necessary.

    Info W2K product key

If you are worried about someone being able to decrypt your product key from the registry, just delete the data in the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\ProductID field. Or you can set it to something entirely bogus. It does not matter. Remove this key then run something like AIDA or whatever you have that usually shows the product key, it should no longer be there. Posted by Felix it's only the pir8ed versions of 2k that won't accept the service packs. FUD There is no checking on Win2k. The keys that don't work for service packs are for XP only.

DNS server not working for external access?

Just out of curiousity and I've no idea why it would just add itself, but check in your forward lookup zones that there is not a "." zone. If there is, remove it.

I did it in three replies to try to make is easier to read. If this is useful to you, sent me an e-mail or something and let me know. Of course if you have a problem with it, you can let me know that too and I'll try to help you out with it. Thanks.

Still using Windows 9x? Which one?

This is not only about $$ to finance the support, but also the time you take away from current products/projects. What I'm getting at here is that this is not an MS exclusive issue. Unfortunately for the sake of evolution of a product you have to drop off support for some of the older stuff; the resources that you need to survive as a company just aren't there to support things ad infinitum. Clutch has already touched upon this; you will find that rollouts take considerably longer, moreso in larger companies with installed bases. Also, just telling them that the OS is "evolving more rapidly" and hence to just upgrade to the latest pretty much quashes your argument of support for one and additionally, who knows what types of incompatiblities or problems with dependencies that may introduce, most especially with legacy and / or in-house code that was developed to meet a certain need of the company. Not to say that service packs or other critical updates may not cause same with MS's software either, but at least I know how long I can count on support and updates for problems that may arise. For a home user being able to upgrade to the latest might well work as they don't tend to have custom code, but they may have a legacy app they need, true in Windows as well. But this discussion is not aimed there so I will leave it at that. Bottom line is that whatever misgivings you have about MS and their support of their OS's, there isn't a single Linux distributor out there that I've seen that can even come close to touching the longevity of support that MS offers.

Still using Windows 9x? Which one?

Quote: I repeat, Microsoft should support every OS they ever sold. This is impractical. Also, I think that MS has probably the longest support around in regards to software. See how far back any type of linux distro or open office is supported.

  20. Quote: I want to reboot the machine at regular intervals to prevent the FTP software from locking-up and generally just to keep the whole system running smoothly so I can guarntee the system will keep doing what its supposed to do! What FTP software are you using? Have you already experienced these types of issues as above? I would suggest that you should not need to reboot the PC for this, this is not a Win9x system; perhaps restart the FTP service if it is locking up; or better yet try another. If you truly want to do this, you can use the task scheduler in combination with the built-in shutdown command. From a command prompt, type shutdown /? for more information; simplest way is "shutdown -r -t 00" -r signifies reboot and -t is time in seconds. Schedule this when you want it to run. Now of course what was mentioned above regarding logging on may make a difference as well. Are all of your applications running on this machine services? If they are the you can use the AT command to schedule the reboot and never have to logon to the PC at all. If however you are not and have applications that you need to logon with, you will need to setup an automatic login, TweakUI as mentioned above will allow you to do this. Further, you should use the task scheduler to schedule both the shutdown command as well as the applications you need to run. Lastly, the difference between the AT command and the task scheduler aside from the latter being GUI with the former command line, is that the task scheduler will ask you whose credentials to login with, while the AT command will run your scheduled task under the local system credentials. Hope this helps, but as above, rebooting really shouldn't be the answer here.

    Info W2K product key

You need not worry about this for two reasons. First, there is no product activation in Win2k so this will not cause any issues. Second, and perhaps more importantly. If you have valid licenses and can prove that, the product key installed really does not matter in the least.
  22. Jasbo, I'd need an e-mail address to send you the information.
  23. jasongw, I've sent you the files. Also, an update. On Microsoft's website you can find a "hotfix" for file copying through Win2k's Terminal Services. If you open this up with something like Winrar, you can extract the files and then manually, or integrate it into the the install CD, install the server side portion. The client end, only the client that comes with 2k can do this, can be updated to use the file copy through the clipboard functionality as well. This works great over the internet too, but I wouldn't recommend using it for anything too large as you can't do too much else while waiting for it to copy over.
  24. Haven't been able to respond for a few days, but those who have requested the info, it has been sent.
  25. Open Regedit Go to Hkey_Users\.Default\Control Panel\Desktop and change the value of the Wallpaper key. You can just leave the entry blank and it won't load anything which sounds like what you're after.
