Enable Joliet when burning the disk. This creates a secondary file descriptor with less restrictions than ISO. For manipulating file names, try some Perl scripting. Much more useful than batch files.

Delete the config.msi folder and try again.

You can make a winnt.sif file that runs commands after the windows install. I use that to install IE6, DX8, WMP7.1 and a bunch of other software unattended after the Windows install. Look on your W2K CD in the tools folder for setupmgr. It's in one of the compressed files in there. That program can set up an unattend.txt file for you. Read the documentation, it will get you started. Another great tool that helps is scriptit (comes w/ nt4 resource kit).

Do any of you happen to know of any software that works like Runas Professional or TqcRunas but is totally free? These tools would save me a lot of time and allow me to tighten security, but I won’t be able to convince anyone to pay for it.

Right click My Computer, click Properties, Advanced tab, click Settings in Startup and Recovery section, configure System Startup section.

Download the Internet Explorer Administration Kit and install it in corporate/lan mode (I forget the exact name). Then run the customization wizard to create an install CD with any customizations you want (or just all default). It downloads all the files for you and sets up an autorun CD install, very nifty![/url]

With SP3 W2K now has Automatic Updates. I know how to turn it of in control panel of course, but I need to find the settings in the registry so I can disable it in logon scripts. Anyone know where to find this damn entry in the registry?

Since I got WinXP last year, I have only had to format twice, both times because of hard drive reconfiguration. Pretty much the same story with W2K before that. But when I was on Win98, it would take a major crap and force me to format to get rid of errors every 3 months or so.

We still have many Win98 workstations, and even a few Win95 worstations. I can't wait to get them replaced, but it takes time and $$$, especially for some of these users whose pst file is 2gb on a 4gb drive!

One thing that has worked for me is to just install the software in question, then uninstall it again.

I'd get the Gigabyte GA-8IHXP motherboard or something with the SiS 658 chipset to get AGP 8x support, such as the AS45GTR which throws in serial ATA as well. Western Digital is the way to go with drives. Maxtor is good too. For a CD burner, get the Plextor 40x, which I just bought yesterday for $120. Memory and CPU, as much as you can afford!

If you just need to get some files you can install the hard drive as a slave in another computer, unless his files are encrypted. Or try some password crackers such as Lophtcrack or Locksmith.

For service pack 3, the commands are a bit different. Download SP3. Copy your W2K CD to a folder such as C:\W2KCD. In a command prompt type: w2ksp3.exe /S:C:\W2KCD. Then burn the contents of C:\W2KCD to a disk, using all your bootable CD options as mentioned elsewhere.

Try this: Click Tools-->Address Book, then in the address book window click Tools-->Options, then in the "Show this address list first" dropdown box, select another address list from the one you have. (you may have 2 "Contacts" address lists listed from an import or something a while back).

In either the folder list or the outlook bar, right click Contacts and select Properties. Select the Outlook Address Book tab and make sure Show this folder as an email address book is checked. Do this for each Contacts folder that you want to use.
