  1. If I transfer files from box A to box B using box A as the controlling terminal all is fine, BUT if I transfer the SAME files from the same location to the same location using box B as the controlling terminal the transfer is either very, very slow or dies altogether. I tried different files and the same thing. I reversed the transfer (B to A) and still the same thing. The computer which I used to initate the xfer shows no problem. If I do it from the other the xfer dies.

I have defragged both drives and changed NIC's in both boxes. I also forced 100 full duplex on both cards.

Both boxes are running 2k w/sp4 with new O/S installs.

Hope that made sense. Any ideas?

  2. Put me down for NOT liking the layout!

    1. Too much space is wasted in the forum name on the home page with the first and last poster. Not enough space for the title and first line. It's hard to read.

    2. As other posted, there is a huge drop in responses from the old format. I use to post here all the time. Now I have dropped it and this is the first post for over a year or more.

This use to be one of my favorites, now it dropped to the bottom of the list................ ;(

P.S. Just how do you delete a PM?

  3. Running 2k w/sp4 I can't boot into safe mode.

It hangs at the splash screen with the black screen and the 4 safe mode's in the corners.

Regular boots are fine! Sounds backwards to me. Suppose to hang on a normal boot!

    Ideas?

  4. I know that is the way it is, but why?

When you move a card to another slot, Windows has a memory problem and forgets that the card was even there and has to reinstall the driver all over again.

Worse yet, I have a 3Com NIC that when the O/S was loaded with the card in place the card was reconiged and the driver was installed with no problem. When I moved the card (to make way for a dual slot card combo) Windows couldn't find the driver! Even when I put the CD in it still couldn't find the driver!

I did have a driver from 3com that worked after a couple of times tring different versions that aren't labeled the best.

    I'm running 2k /sp4

    Input...........?

  5. What O/S are you running?

I gave up on Creatives bloated drivers! The ones Windows installs work ok AFAIC.

BUT, there is another avenue I discovered through another forum:

    http://download.kxproject.lugosoft.com/

I had no problems with this package. It gives you the option to install just the drivers and/or the control panel. I installed both.

BTW, the control panel has selectable skins (if that matters, I didn't like the default skin).

    Check it out.

  6. I returned the box to the owner since it was up tp par. I was just wondering about the lack of a hit with the older memory.

I know since the bus isn't a 133 the difference wouldn't be that great, but was surprised to see the little difference.

Since there WAS a hit, is it ok to assume that the older memory isn't PC100? If it was PC100 there shouldn't be a 'hit' at all mixing it with the other stick (even though it was 'better' memory?

  7. On a 100MHz memory bus (AMD 751 chipset) mixing one PC133 and two PC66 (?) strips only dropped the benchmark 5% running SiSoft Sandra 2004.

I'm not sure about these other 2 strips (32MB each) of memory. The date on the chips is 1998. Can I assume it is PC66? I'm just surprised the hit was less than 5% vs. testing only the PC133 strip (128MB) by itself.

It went from 660MB/sec down to 630MB/sec when the additional strips were added.

Input? Am I correct about the '98 chips being PC66?

  8. The card works fine, the Creative drivers don't, neither does the Windows control panel. Those aren't the audio cards fault, only the programmers.

The fix is in the S/W not the H/W!

FWIW, I came across this site:

    http://download.kxproject.lugosoft.com/

that has a driver &control panel for many of Creatives cards including the SB and Audigy series! I install it and it seems to work ok so far. The CP is a big improvement and ther are selectable skins available.

Down the road I will get another card and it won't be from Creative I will tell you that much.

  9. I'm looking for a decent non-bloated (as in Creative) program to sub M$'s poorly laid out audio control panel(s). Creative's control panel along with their drivers suffer from the usual 'bloat' factor and I would perfer NOT to use it.

Any suggestions that would place the playback along with the bass/treble controls and recording on the same panel instead of switching back and forth as in Windows?

I'm running 2k w/sp4 and a SB Live Value card.

  10. As much as I don't like or use M$'s programs (other than the O/S) I do use MS Config for startup control of those nasty annoying programs that sneak in there without your knowledge and screw the system up. You know the ones that 90% of computer users have NO idea what's going on!

Anyways, after looking around the partition for other problems I found that there were problems with program locations pointing the other drive where the image was taken from.

I deleted the partition and restored a eariler version and so far it look fine. There were many other issues I noticed and I guess I made a mistake or something happened when I did a disk to disk copy using Drive Image 2002. I usually just image and save the image. Then restore the drive from that image. This time I did a disk to disk copy and it didn't fully work. The drive letters got messed up on the main bootable drive where the image was copied to from the backup drive.

If anyone is wondering wny I do this (that I have been doing for 3 years now) it is for access to the other drive in Windows as oppose to DOS where viruses or other problems prevent me from deleting or changing system files. Makes life alot easier to do it in Windows than at a DOS prompt! Also if the main drive goes down all I have to do is throw the toggle switch on the front panel, shut down and boot into the backup drive.

  11. I get a 'explorer' window that opens to 'My Documents' each time I bootup!

I close it, but each time it still opens. I think I remember seeing this long time ago, but surely don't remember where.

I'm running 2k w/sp4 with no auto anything (updates, etc.) or virus scanners and only M$ processes running at startup.

  12. I get 2 error messages when I try to run DX Diag as follows:

    Entry Point not Found

The procedure entry point GetRawInputDeviceInfoW can't be located in USER32.dll

    and:

    Entry Point not Found

Procedure entry point DdEntry1 can't be found in GDI32.dll

No other errors show. I also got the first error while trying to run a demo program for a HDTV tuner card's software.

I'm running 2k w/sp4 using DirectX V9 I have also did a 'upgrade' of 2k for another problem that was resolved per M$'s recomemdation. I don't know if these two problems were there before the 'upgrade'!

    Any ideas??

  13. I did see that after I posted the question, BUT it didn't work!

I restored all the registry entries that were removed with System Suite 5 since I copied the drive from the other HDD, but that still diodn'yt work!

Now what (except for the upgrade)??
