    MSHAT.exe error

I get a "mshat.exe" error when I try to open add/remove programs. I remember having this problem before or at least something like it, but it wasn't resolved here. Any ideas??

    MSHAT.exe error

I did see that after I posted the question, BUT it didn't work! I restored all the registry entries that were removed with System Suite 5 since I copied the drive from the other HDD, but that still diodn'yt work! Now what (except for the upgrade)??
  4. I need "vxdmgr32.exe for the system32 folder. I tried to do a search at M$'s site, but it came up blank. The orginal has a virus and it is sitting in the recycle bin. The system barks at me with it not where it should be. Can I just copy one from another 2k box or do I need to ectract one from the I386 folder in the sp3 update? If I do, would someone show me the command line to use to extract that file. Thanks.........

9 in 1 Card reader issues

Anyone with digital camera experiance and card readers? I have a 9 in 1 ATech card reader (USB 2) and it corrupted a CF card doing a CUT and paste operation. Previous COPY and paste operations were ok. I was able to reformat the card in another camera since the Minolta wouldn't even work with the card installed. I'm running 2k w/sp3 on one bootable drive and sp4 in the other bootable drive. It was the sp4 drive where that problem happened (don't know if that is the issue). The sp4 install shows 4 drive letters for each slot. The sp3 install only shows ONE drive letter and I can't access the XD slot with that drive, only the sp4 w/ 4 drive letters. Why would a CUT and paste (thus deleting, or trying to delete the files) corrupt the whole card?? Lastly, is this a sp3 vs sp4 issue with the absense of the other drive letters?

9 in 1 Card reader issues

Update................ It was my understanding that the 'eject hardware' icon in the system tray (Win 2k w/sp4) was for removing the whole device (card reader) not for each memory card itself. The instructions for the Atech Pro 9 reader I have says that also. BUT, others have said to use the eject hardware before you remove the card from the reader. If I remove the card without using that utility, I get a message "delayed write failed.........unable to save all the data". If I use that utility, the whole entry disappears and I can't use the reader without a reboot. BTW, there are NO drivers installed for the reader per Atech's recomendation even though the instructions say different!

    Need system32 folder file

There were 7 files altogether with 2 different viruses. Two were in another partition which I deleted and four more were in the system32 folder which after removal didn't bark at me. Only this one. I assumed it was a real system file. Should of known better, I ran into this before where it comes up looking for the file because of a registry entry. I will look for that entry. Reg Edit won't work? It has to be Red Edit32?

    Invalid boot.ini file

Why all that if it is just this small file? How can I extract the boot.ini file from the I368 folder on the CD without expanding the whole folder?
  9. videobruce

    Invalid boot.ini file

Here is what the boot.ini file looks like now: [boot loader] timeout=0 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect It still gives me the error. Mind you it DOES boot ok, but with the error message just after the bios screen.

    Invalid boot.ini file

Quote: Theres an application included with XP Pro that will create/edit the boot.ini file. I don't know if this is included with 2000 nor can I remember what it was called. I seem to remember it being a command line program though. Everything I have read says just to use notepad. It has worked in the past for me.

    Invalid boot.ini file

Quote: (Question: Is the WINNT folder in fact/indeed on your FIRST partition?) Yes it is on the first partition. I compared this with my other box's boot.ini file and it read the same.

    Invalid boot.ini file

The boot.ini file looks like this: [boot loader] timeout=0 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT [operating systems] I resaved it as a Unicode format, but it still barks at me.

    Invalid boot.ini file

90% of that is over my head except the 'save as' format part. It was saved as a ANSI format as I assume the others were (that worked before). I will try to save it as a Unicode format.

Programs close by themselves when using mouse with Laptop

Update................ Now the cursor freezes when I'm browsing and waiting for pages to load. If I keep the cursor moving it seems to free it up. Almost as if it was a mechnical problem.

    Poll! Worlds worst custom machine???

One that is running YOL (Yuppies On Line), Norton Anti Virus, and Idiot Exploiter at the same time!

Drives aren't that expensive. You can get a decent drive for less than $60 now. I would get a 2nd drive before you format this one (after checking it with WD Diag utility). I would also only partition the drive in 2 parts not 4, maybe 3 if you REALLY need 3. KISS..............Keep it simple ......

Nope! 1. NOT touching the laptop 2. Touchpad is disabled Nice try though.

Didn't work. I even tried using Mozilla to see IF it was Opera and still the same problem. Touchpad is disabled and it was checked.

Don't you just hate this stuff???? The 4 drive letters you mentioned, are these 4 drives, 4 partitions, 2 drives with 2 partitions each or what?? Can you save your data on CD, wipe the drive(s) completely by using the manufactures utility and repartition if you want and start from scratch either with FAT32 or NTFS (Depending on the size of the drive(s)?

Funny you mentioned the Extorsist.............. I just broke down and ordered a DVD player for the first time (I'm going to retire my Sayno V-Cord recorder) and one of the movies I ordered was the Extorsist! Hummmmmmm.............do you think there is a connection?? Someone else suggested turning off the touchpad which I did (after it took 5 minutes to find that feature buried deep within one of the mouse tabs). I am tring that idea now. It happens so fast, if you blink you would miss it! (Just kidding about the V Cord deal if anyone remembers that format back in 1977).
  24. After a few minutes without a browser running using DU Meter as a in/out monitor I'm getting a massive (for a analog connection) upload of unknown data to a unknown destination by a unknown process. I have: Done a virus scan (though not up to date definations) Used AdAware V6 and SpyBot V1.2 Checked processes running I am running 2k w/sp3 The laptop was upgraded with Idiot Exploiter 6 from M$'s site (this isn't my laptop BTW). Before the dialer was starting byself, now it seems ok, but not sure yet. The laptop freezes where only a reboot solves the condition (no browser running the last time). The IE update was the last upgrade/change AFAIK. It is almost as this machine was doing a DOS attack to another site by uploading massive amounts of data somewhere.

Massive data upload when dialup adapter is running

To make a short story long, it appears to be a worm; http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=WORM_NACHI.A Problem is I can't install that M$ patch because the install I did is a slipstreamed SP3 burned CD and on top of that I also I do a 'LittleWhiteDog NTOSKRNL mod' using Resource Hacker to change that damn M$ splash screen. I get a error when I try to install that patch stating I need something newer that SP2. I already have SP3 installed. Not to stop there, since I didn't know what was doing this and thought it was the dialup adapter I connected the Laptop to my network so I could d/l a updated virus package from TrendMicro (which I did). After running the updated virus definitions that NACHI.A worm showed up. I had my main box on also and that got affected also! NACHI.A just did my machine. I did a manual remove on both machines and it seems to be gone. Too early to tell yet. I don't know where he got it from.
