What's wrong with the free 1? I have the latest v. & it's fine on my system.
-
I realise this may sound like a crazy idea, but have you tried unsintalling ZA Pro, & trying the free version instead? A friend of mine had probs with the Pro v. as well.

Illinois FS/FT: complete system for 60-80gb 7200RPM HDD

Quote: Looking for a 60-80gb hdd, non IBM You might wanna add Seagate to the exclusion list as well. I nearly bought 1, but rang their freephone advice line to check on something & the guy let slip that they make drives for IBM. "A DeathStar by any other name, does it not crash as badly?" -
I've not used ZA Pro, only the free version, & not had much networking experience, but I did have some fun & games with getting the free 1 to work when I had a mate's machine over here to sort out. When you say ZA won't allow your other machine to accept files, do you mean that you're trying to access the firewalled machine from the other 1, or trying to send them to the other 1 from the firewalled 1? If you're trying to access the firewalled 1 from the other 1 then there's a couple of things you can try: 1. try accessing the firewalled 1 from the other 1, then on the firewalled 1 go into ZA'a log viewer & look for an entry corresponding to your other PC. Hopefully you'll have an entry with an IP that's something like 192.168.xxx.xxx [it's possible I could be remembering the numbers wrong - I tend to forget stuff if I've only done it once or twice ]. Anyway, my point is, you can right click on that entry in ZA's log where it says it's blocked it, & tell it to Add to Zone -> Trusted. That might solve your probs. 2. Goto the Firewall section in ZA, then the Zones tab. Click the Add button, then IP Range. When it asks you for the IPs to enter, for the start of the range take the 1st 3 sections of your other PC's IP address, & put a 0 on the end, & for the end of the range, do the same as the start, but make the 4th section 255. Hope this helps.

Quote: Umm, it should be less than 10kb, as any decent page should be less than 80kb total for fast, stable loading to begin with. 10KB? sounds fair enough to me.

Quote: I would put on 4gb right off, but the cost of RAM (even PC-133/PC-150 SDRAM) went up again... (I don't think this one, Cenatek, saves state... Platypus might though!) * So, 1gb will do (for now) for what I plan to use it for! RAM's currently @ the cheapest I've ever seen it over here [well, in 1 place anyway - might be a sale, but I didn't see it advertised as such]. I woulda bought myself some if I hadn't needed a new HDD more urgently. Hopefully I'll be able to get some before the price goes up or they run out. -

Quote: Quote: the DeathStar LOL! Hilarious... gotta be the IBM 60-75gb series, right? (Good name for the DeskStar!) 30GB 75GXP Quote: Quote: I decided that the risk of waiting until I could afford the WD HDD wasn't worth it. Got one... FLIES! Git! No need to rub it in! Quote: (At least your getting some useful mileage outta that "deathstar" (lol) as you call it using it as secondary swappage/temp duties in meantime!) Yeah, it frees up a bit of space, & also might improve performance a little [probably won't notice it though] as the 2 HDDs are on seperate channels. Quote: P.S.=> I dumped my RAID setup & will be doing all that on a Cenatek RocketDrive PCI-ScSi SolidState Ramdrive card soon w/1gb PC-133 SDRAM by Micron on it... it's gonna FLY! Can't wait... 4-5 more weeks tops! apk I think it would be interesting to take that idea of the SolidState Ramdrive, add more RAM [say a total of 4 or 8GB] & install windows on it, then have some software for incremenetal backup to the HDD when the system is idle. I don't remember the specifics of the card you're talking about, but I remember looking @ 1 that you posted a link for & it had its own PSU, seperate to that of the PC, so that it retained all data when the PC was powered off, like a conventional HDD would. Now that would be FAST! -

Bought a new HDD this week - a 60GB Maxtor 5TO60H6 [DiamondMax Plus 60]. It's not the 1 I wanted, or was saving up for, [i wanted the WD 120GB Special Edition (although I've seen the 200GB v. is now available ), which I someday still hope to get]. but I didn't see that I had any choice really, as my DeathStar's bad behaviour was getting worse [like randomly spinning down or refusing to spin up!]. Having fiddled about with my hardware I have both HDDs in & running, & the DeathStar hasn't gone to sleep again since I did the re-arranging [Wednesday, when I bought the Maxtor], so I guess it is possible that its spinning down & refusal to spin up again may have been power related [i've disconnected my old CD ROM [still got CDRW in there] & a cheapo fan I had lying around that I had decided to hook up]. However, the DeathStar has also been occasionally doing that FING [Fear Inducing Noise of Grinding] that they are known for doing, so I decided that the risk of waiting until I could afford the WD HDD wasn't worth it. Oh well, @ least I have a bit more elbow room, in terms of storage space. @ the mo I'm just using the DeathStar for stuff like my swap file, temp files & temporary internet files. I'm not really willing to put anything more critical on it, for fear of losing it. My next intended purchase is some RAM. PC World are selling 512MB sticks of PC133 for only £49! -

Quote: wouldn't you want a dvi connector on a digital tv instead of a vga one? Not instead of, as well as. Not all graphics cards have DVI output. I mean, if it's only gonna have 1 or the other then it should be a 15 pin D-Sub connector, but ideally it ought to have both. -
Quote: All I'm after is an Athlon one to put on my system case.... which currently has a SuSE sticker on it. Dilligaf I got a sticker with my AthlonXP, but maybe that's cos I bought the retail version.

Quote: Wow, it seems like a good deal, even if it *is* an AMD... It's not the AMD CPU that would concern me [as I have the 1900+ myself, & am happy with it], but the IBM HDD [& yes, I've got 1 of those too, not same model, but still an IBM - that's why I don't like them].

Quote: I could not for the life of me find a widescreen HDTV with any kind of monitor connnector. Well HDTV seems to to still be a novelty for the rich here, & not the sorta thing you see in most high-street stores, but I have seen the 15 pin D-Sub connectors on ordinary widescreen TVs. Having done a search on the net [which was more productive when I searched on "XGA" instead of just computer ] there are plenty with that type of input.... but they're all LCD, Plasma, rear-projection, or actual projectors, which are all a tad pricey. However, if you'd be willing to settle for SVGA then I did find a place called Electroline that does some HDTVs with SVGA input for somewhat less scarey prices. -

Quote: As for the DVI connector, only ones that are flat screen LCD's have those connectors. A bit pricey Not DVI, I mean the same type of connector as CRT monitors use - you can get TVs that have that type of connector as an input. -

You mean you went to all the trouble of getting an expensive TV & didn't check to make sure it had a 15pin d-sub [or whatever it's called] connector on the back? What about s-vhs? -

Got myself some thumbscrews @ last. They've been a little scarce, or expensive in the UK until now, but now Maplin's doing them in packs of 6 for £2.49 [product code WF78K]. Got 2 packs, but will be getting more. -

Having left an IE window open @ NTC, as I normally do, obviously the news would have gone out of date & there would be more news since I checked last [yesterday]. So I refreshed the page & put a word from what was the latest story before I refreshed the window into the find box to save me having to scroll down. @ that point IE freezes, & reports as not responding. Everything else still worked, & I can use Edit, Find On This Page [or ctrl+f] on other pages/sites & it works fine. It even works on the forum pages, just not on the main page. [it still does it if I open a new window, goto NTC main page & do it, BTW]

nevermind, it appears to be ok again.

If you want tonnes of IDE connectability, & don't need legacy compliance then Abit may have what you need, depending on which flavour of CPU you prefer, AMD or Intel, there's 2 boards - the AT7 & the IT7. Both can run upto 12 IDE devices, & seeing as they use a highpoint RAID controller [from what I've heard] you should be just fine running drives normally [instead of in a RAID array].

Quote: Directed more to DosFreak & Alien -> "They laughed at Jules Verne too..." with a just a PINCH/HINT of the Rolling Stones' lyrics in my dish here ontop of that-> "Time... is on my side! Leave the frontpage for what it's supposed to be? News?

Quote: As for me, I don't mind the file news. I just hate the pop-ups (like the one for the Smart-Certify place), and if it keeps up I will have to start using my banner ad/pop-up killer again. For those who haven't found a ad/pop-up killer they like, try www.panicware.com [no I'm not on commision ], if you haven't already - I use the Companion version. It stops almost all pop-ups, whilst allowing you to browse normally, so I leave it on all the time. Occasionally it'll stop a legitimate window form opening, eg if you're browsing an online store & click on a pic to get a larger image of something & nothing happens, in which case you can try clicking on it a couple of more times, in which case the prog normally gets the message & allows the window to open, or you just turn it off long enough to open the window, or you could also add it to the list of allowed sites/addresses. -
... & we'll all be eating meals consisting of food pills, & using personal rocket packs to get to work. Alec, please reduce the size of images you post [in terms of pixel dimensions, not filesize] - I'm using a screen res. of 1024x768 & as a result of the size of the pic you posted I had to constantly scroll from left to right to read the posts in this thread.

Have you tried StyleXP? that can change log-ons, as well as handle backgrounds, visual styles, & themes. AFAIK you'd still have to load the prog & tell it to change the logon, I have yet to see a prog that will change a logon automatically with a theme.

Have you got the option to send & receive @ startup of OE turned on? If you have denied it permission to remember your email addies that could possibly cause a bit of a slowdown. Now for a question of my own. Every once in a while OE gets a bit weird about shortcuts in email: - If I already have an IE window open & I click on a link in an email then nothing @ all happens. - If I don't have any IE windows open & I click on a link in an email then an IE window will open, but it stays blank - nothing in the address bar or status bar & does absolutely nothing. - However, if I drag a link from OE to an already open IE window that works just fine. In the past I think I've solved it with System Restore, but for some reason, although it's turned on, there don't appear to be any restore points, despite me having rebooted a couple of times in last few days during installs of stuff [& @ 1 point to see if it was my ISP being a pain, or whether it was my system (was ISP)]. Anyone know of a fix for this?
