As a general rule I never log on as admin on any of my PCs. If you use the runas command, you can walk away from your desk and if someone gets on your PC they have absolutely no ability to give them or someone else more access than needed. As Devros pointed out also some viruses and trojan horses will raise havac on a computer logged in as administrator then it will hit your network. As administrator you have the ability to access all files and edit the registry. A virus will take advantage of this and the NTFS securitys will be nonexistant. You are correct in that some programs will not work on a account that has little power such as the user group but just give yourself power user account privleges and this should help some. If a application needs to have admin rights, use the runas command to promote yourself to admin while you are in that window and your system will stay more secure. As for remote connections you should be able to set up yourself to have the proper permissions at the domain level to allow yourself to do what you need to without allowing yourself to be opened up for attack. If you do need to log on as Admin for that machine you can use the runas command for that also. It only effects that connection and it does not open your PC up for full control. I run a Windows 2000 network at home and my job is a NT network. I run into issues all the time of not having the correct permissions at the time I need them. The runas is a great tool to allow you to have the correct credentials at the time you need them and not leave yourself open. If a network is properly administrated people will have just enough permission they need to do their job. No more no less. Look all I am stating is that the way I was taught and everything that I have ran into is to use a normal network account and not log on as admin until it is absolutly needed. Everyone has a different way they decide to run their network and I will not tell you how to run yours but I think that this is the most secure way to keep hackers out and still be productive. Remember that most companies are hacked internally from their own users and not from the outside.

FYI. Something to keep in mind about firewalls. They only keep the honest people out. If a hacker wants in they will get in. Most of these inexpensive market firewalls have had their source code out for a long time.

You should log on to the WS as your normal account and use the "runas" command to log on as administrator. How you get to the runas command is hold down the left shift key and right click on the option. This should bring up a promt called runas. Left click on this and it will allow you to enter the admin username and password.

You know what else sucks. ATT also quit supporting M$ Frontpage. How can they just decide to quit supporting one of the most popular website editors? I have confronted this with them and they just blew me off. Once DSL is in my area I will be moving to DSL.

If you type MMC in run and add the group policy snapin in the console you can disable the CD recording options in the user configuration under Administrative templates/ windows components/ windows explorer.

The advantage of a switch over a hub is that on a switch each port has the max amount of bandwidth allowed, i.e. a 8 port 10/100 switch has 8 ports that transfer data at 100mb each. Also a switch has the ability to go full duplex at a transfer rate of 200 mb for each port. A hub shares the bandwidth with all the ports, i.e a 8 port 10/100 hub would share the same bandwidth of 100 mb across the entire hub. That is just a little over 12 mbs for each port. As for ATT they suck. I would not listen to a word they say. I have gone left and right over my connection and it stil does not have the same speed that it had when I first got it hooked up. I went from about 2mb to 875k speed in a 5 month period. I have complained to them and they gave me a bunch of BS. ATT will not use dynamic routing and they send you to jam packed routers and this drops your connection. The only reason that I am still on ATT is because where I live the only option I have is 56k or ISDN. DSL is not here yet but I understand that it will be here in the next year. ATT has the monoploy in this area for high speed access and controls it with a iron fist. They are a bunch of network nazis if you ask me.

I agree. Via make stable chipsets but in order to get any performance out of them you have to install Via 4-1 drivers and it still may not make them any run any better. Supposedly Micro$oft has built in support for Via in Windows XP but considering the problems I have ran into with M$ drivers in the past, on very common devices, I would not trust them. I would go with a more mainstream chipset such as Intels chipset, expecially with a Intel processor.

I just seen a article in I think Cnet and they found out that Kazaa lite also has a spyware program that the programmer can activate at a specified time and it has got your computer. Run the new version of ad aware and you may see the program on it. Remove it like I did and it no longer works.

The problem with Macs is that they do not network very well. Sure they can run TCP/IP but they do things in their own way and it causes problem with everything around them. I work at a hospital and we have users that have MACs and are very determined to keep them. Because of their networking problems we have to keep them in their own network. I personally do not "drink the apple juice" and if I were in charge of the network they would be gone. I will say though that MACs are great for users who deal with graphics and photo editing. I have seen their computers display X-rays and other images and they really do a good job. I still do not think that the cost of supporting these computers are worth the benefits gained in this area though.

DVD player have the ability to defeat some copy protection. Developers sometimes put a "ghost track" on the disk to stop copying and regular CD roms get confused and stop reading the original copy. DVD players can determine if the CD has a ghost track in it and ignore it. If you have ever been copying a disk and the CD rom suddenly stops reading chances are it may have a ghost track.

I think that AMD makes a great chip and is well worth the money but, AMD still has a few compatability issues and they run extremely hot. If your heat sink fan stops you have a real problem on your hands and will probably have to by a new processor. With Intels new technology It will protect your processor much better. The Via chipset is grave digger for any processor in my opinion and I always look for a more mainstream chipset for my motherboards. I have had a couple of different chipsets and I find that Intels are easier to install and are supported by most OS's better. The chances of having to install other drivers are less with Intel than any other and are very stable for the most part. Make sure if you change controllers on your XP box you have a way of editing the BOOT.INI. NT uses it to locate the windows directory and if it cannot find it right away it will start lokking for it which will make loading very slow.
