AGP 2x, Sidebanding on AMD751

While playing around with WCPUID, I made the discovery that my AGP bus was only running in 1x mode, in spite of the fact it supports 2x mode. Also, sidebanding is disabled, even though that's supported. I have a Microstar MSI 6167 motherboard...

While playing around with WCPUID, I made the discovery that my AGP bus was only running in 1x mode, in spite of the fact it supports 2x mode. Also, sidebanding is disabled, even though that's supported. I have a Microstar MSI 6167 motherboard with an old style cartridge package Athlon (650 MHz). The chipset is AMD751 and the graphics card is a 3DProphet 2 MX (GeForce 2 MX based card). I'm using the latest nVidia detonator XP drivers. The BIOS is Award BIOS 1.6 (According to MicroStar's website, the most up to date BIOS for my motherboard), this doesn't have an option for setting the AGP mode or features like sidebanding.

I tried a utility called DC Genie to enable them. They appear checked when I restart the program, but they have no effect, even after a restart. I'm assuming it's writing a registory setting which is now obsolete or is only Windows 9x compatible.

I have a screen grab of what WCPUID reported.

The AMD750 chipset had problems with AGP2x (it had noise issues making it very flaky) so what you're experiencing is quite normal. As for sidebanding I'm not sure, maybe someone else can help you out there.

This is an "old" board. Most often the AGP is set up through the BIOS in the Chipset Area. But, it being an older Board, I doubt that what your after (changing 1X to 2X support) would be found. Don't worry about the Side Band Addressing, it is ususally Disabled since it seems that most video cards don't use it and there doesn't seem to be that much benefit to it to those that do.

On the MSI board there is a driver for your chipset and AGP: http://www.msi.com.tw/support/driver/download/chipset/amd751agp.exe

On AMD's support there is a utility for your chipset and WinXP/2000: http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/utilities/miniport_533.EXE

Your Graphics Aperture Size is "high" but well within what is usually expected. It can be anywhere between 16-256. 64 is pretty well "average" but this depends on the motherboard. I only mention this because if you choose to run either of these two utilities, this value may change.

I don't think that the Geforce 2 Mx will enable sidebanding because it probably doesn't have the need. I have an Asus A7V mainboard with the KT-133 chipset (Socket A) and the detonator drivers enable AGP 4X (Fastwrites), but AGP 2X (Sidebanding) is never turned on. I originally had a 16MB Voodoo Banshee AGP card and it would never turn on 2X, but then I got a Leadtek Geforce 32MB and when I installed the drivers both 2X and 4X were shown as on. I then had a Geforce 2 Ti 64MB for a few months and only 4X would come on. I now have a Geforce 4 Mx 440 64MB and still only 4X is on. I use WCPUID also to see the results.
