So "Off the ball" with USB - Silly question

I need to get hold of a USB external HD for work. The ones I've seen at good prices are all listed as USB 2. All of the PC's here at work have USB 1 or USB 1.1 ports. Will a USB 2 device work in a USB 1.x port, allbeit transfer at a slower rate...
