I get VERY slow access times between my XP machine (previous win9x without problems) and my WinME machine. Both machines are linked together via a 100mbit hub and two 100mbit NICs. Any file transfers between the two machines are now about 3x slower than before, and whenever the XP machine (but not the WinME machine) tries to access any shared drive on the WinME box, it sits there for upto a minute doing nothing (as if its searching or checking something). Ive already turned off 'automatically search for network drives and printers', but that doesnt seem to have helped. Does anyone know what exactly is XP doing while it sits idle like that trying to access the shared drive? And any way i can turn the crap off and get it working normally again?

The previous threads on this subject were of little help. My XP still goes bonkers when trying to access my Win9X machine, but in the reverse the Win9X machine has zero problems accessing the XP machine frown

Try removing the QoS Packet Scheduler from the Network properties. I noticed it slowing down my transfers to my Win2k Server when I switched to XP Pro. I removed it and my transfer rates went back to normal.

If you dont want uninstall it, try disabling it first and see if that helps any.

The delay while browsing WinME shares using the WinXP machine is very often caused by the WinXP machine attempting to search for scheduled tasks on the machine being browsed (quite why is a mystery) and failing. To stop this behaviour open up regedt32 or regedit, browse to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RemoteComputer\NameSpace

And delete the following key:

{D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}

Note that this won't speed up file transfers - that's a different problem.

QoS packet scheduler is disabled, ill try removing it next. And that registry key is long gone aswell.

I get some very weird slowdowns, like when I see all the shared drives on the 2nd computer, and say I right click on the shared C:\ so I can map network drives, after rightclicking just for the menu to pop up I have to wait like 60 seconds.

Under Network Properties, click the Advanced button. Select the WINS tab and change your NetBIOS settings to "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP". There will still be a delay, but it should be noticably shorter.

Xiven,

Regarding "The delay while browsing WinME shares using the WinXP machine...", I was wondering, is this only with WinME, or does it apply to any Win9x system? I'm experiencing similar problems, but when accessing a shared folder across a LAN from XP -> Win95.

And, you delete the key from the XP, and not the 95 system, correct?

Yeah you delete it from 2K/XP.
