the answer is get the most recent bios for you system and make sure that avanced power management is enabled before instaling win2k

I have the same problem..my system won't turn off after I tell it to shutdown. I have the latest bios for my motherboard. PLEASE HELP ME!!!!

In the power options, enable APM.

Just doing that won't work; first of all your board has to be ACPI compatible (most newer boards are) and has to be installed as an ACPI compatible kernel; to do that you either have to run setup from within win2k (put the cd and click on install) or do a clean install. If you change it to acpi it'll screw up your system. Hope this helps somebody.

i don't know but having a ATX case works as i have heard it from somewhere - but who care if it doesn't auto turnoff for u?

Reinstall win2k, and when asked "press F6 to boot from a specic SCSI device...", press F5. Choose "ACPI complaint system" from the list. This will install windows 2000 in ACPI mode. When finished, you system will self-poweroff on shutdown.

PS: there is also a registry key at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon named "powerdownaftershutdown". You might try changing its value first

ok - if i turn on ACPI when installing - it wont install - it locks up at the very first Starting Windows 2000 bit right at the start of the installation - if i install it as standard pc then turn on APM it chashes on shutdown - with an error somthing like irq_not_less_or_equal_to and i think it mentions the kernel too

Disable APM through Power applet in Control Panel.

My Compaq was ACPI compliant, but it did the same thing...
My custom computer is ACPI compliant, and it shuts off automatically.

The difference? Power supplies..

If you're running an AT power supply, it will most likely always wait for you to press a button, whereas ATX will shut off automatically.

However, my AT supplied Compaq still tends to shut off automatically...so who knows.

Just something worth looking into
