W2000 Pro Networking

I have 2 PCs at my home. I used a pair of Point-to-point cable to connect them with ACER ALN320 NICs. Previously, both of them ran with W98Se. Now I installed W2000 Pro on one of the machine. I could activate my network in my W2000 but it could...

Need a little more info ...

What protocol are you using (TCP/IP), what settings do you have (ip address, subnet mask, etc)...

I use TCP/ip and NetBUI. The IP addresses
for my w2000 is 192.168.0.2 and W98 is
192.168.0.1. Network submask is 255.255.255.0. Please note I don't use a
hub in my configuration. Thx.

If you have a reason for using NetBeui great, if not uninstall it...

Using TCP/IP ...

1st - Can you ping each computer?

2nd - If you search for their NetBios names (Right Click on Network Neighborhood (9x)/My Network Places (2k)) do they find each other?

I will try to uninstall NetBUI. I could not
ping my W98 machine nor the computer name appears in My Network Place.

PS. I used W2000 Prof. Does it make any difference if I am not using W2000 Server? Thx.

Make sure you have the correct media type selected in your NIC's properties (if you're using combo cards)

Since you were networking fine when both machines were 98, the problem is local to your w2k machine ... no need to worry about cable. No, It doesn't matter if its server or Professional.

If removing NetBeui doesn't solve it (prob. wont).

I checked the stock drivers in 2k and this board and don't find wether your NIC is compatible with 2k... R U sure it is?

If it is...

Check to see that the NIC is enabled (Local Area Connection -> Properties -> Hit the configure button). Also, make sure that an IRQ shows up in the resource tab (9x was famous for detecting a few cards and showing no signs of problems and still not working. If you looked under the resources and entered the missing value for the IRQ, you were up and running - Although I haven't seen 2k do this YET).

I haven't had any problems with AutoNeg. on the Connection Type (Advanced Tab) under 2k, but Jabba may have a point - I've seen this cause headaches in 9x.

Check for new drivers for Win2k for that NIC?

Verify your settings (ip, subnet, etc...)

definetly check the connection types between a win2k machine and win9x machine. Ive got experience with this one myself. It will cause intermittent access or wont even work at all on autodetect. I guess this a problem with only certain nics.

After digging the Internet for some time I'd been abled to come across a newer version of Win98 Driver for ALN320 (Ver 1.2). Seemed
like the driver from the installation diskette (ie 1.01) sucked. The new driver
solved all my problems. Thx guys for your input.
