I am building the ultimate "budget" SMP/gaming system. I have a bunch of hardware laying around, and I was wondering what I should use.

This will be a WinNT (and soon, a Win2000) machine with dual Celerons @ 550. What hardware has the best NT support? Should I use my Monster Sound MX-300 or buy a SB Live! ? Stick with the TnT/TnT2 or go with a Voodoo3? These are the kinds of questions I need answers to.

Which OEM's (Diamond, Creative, etc) have the best NT drivers?

Thanks...

Hi,
can't answer all your questions but this may help. I run NT Server 4 (SP5) and use a Diamond Viper TNT2 32mb card and a SB Live sound card and all works fine. I am a MCP and built the machine myself using an Aopen HX08 full tower case with an overclocked celeron 300 running at 450 (runs solid as a rock) I used the Aopen AX6bc motherboard as it is a jumperless design and has recieved many favourable reviews. I cannot advise you on a dual processor board as I have not reviewed them. The Microsoft webiste has a HCL - hardware compatability list that may be worth checking out, don't use the one that comes on the NT CD as it is well out of date.

Hope this helps, all the best - Paul

Just a follow up to my last post, I found this link re dual celeron overclocking and thought you may be able to draw some new info from it re the dual celeron setup.http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/dualceleron550/

Cheers,

Paul

As for your Vid card choice, I would go with a Hercules TNT 2 on an Intel platform, read some benchmarks on tomshardware.com Better yet, wait for the stoopid fresh shizat from these homiez...http://www.bitboys.com/

Dual processors aren't supported in any game except Q3 arena??? Do read the firingsquad thing on this. doesn't look like you really need duallies for much but it would be cool I kno smile
