I recently downloaded and installed Mandrake 9.1. Akin to Mandrake 9.0 I have had similar installation problems. I chose to install KDE and not install GNOME in both instances. I chose on several occasions Xfree4.3 and 3.3.6. Installation goes without a hitch however when Mandrake loads it fails to load KDE. I switched between installting KDE with XFree 4.3 and 3.3.6 and it fails to load KDE in both cases. Mandrake 8.0 worked great with Xfree 3.3.6 however mucks up with 4.3 by distorting the display of icons, etc. Why is this? The same occurs when I install GNOME with version 9.0 and 9.1.

My hardware is:
Compaq Presario
Trident CyberBlade Video Adapter
192MB Ram
4 GB Harddrive.

Thanks!

Mandrake 9.1 is a bit of a nightmare , I installed it last night.
Mandrake 9.0 is much more stable.
Nevertheless try install 9.1 but dont choose kde or gnome install blackbox and xfree 4.3
once booted then install kde or gnome.
Althou for a laptop I use a lightweight window manager like blackbox or fluxbox.
Laptops are slower always. (hard drives at 4200 rpm )

Greetings ,

Your problem will be solved if you :

a) Login as root and : init 3
b) vim /etc/X11/XF86Config
c)add the line : Option "CrtScreen" within the screen section ESC -> : wq!
d) init 5
e)logout
f)login as user -> startx

That worked with some Ati's/in TFT in some laptops which was a synch and font/interlaced like mode problem.

Try that out and see where you get from there.

Farewell.

Greetings ,

Try as well to change your vga to vesa typical you know what i'm talking about , and the max resolution that's supported by your monitor and choose hz normal values.

See where you go from there

All these in case what i've told you before don't do anything

() That one solved many problems due to some incompatible issues between ati various cards | TFT monitors

Farewell
