I'm trying to install Flight Simulator X for my son. When clicking on "add new software", I get the error message "Failed to initilaize properly (0xc0000005)"

MS support has been next to useless.

I've seen references to nVidia graphics card while scanning through possible causes. I have an nVidia running on XP

Any suggestions?

Run DXDIAG tool to see if your nvidea graphics card is working properly and also check that the latest drivers are installed (not beta versions).

what I have found on this

The error 0xC0000005 is generated by an illegal "memory access violation". This can be caused by anything from faulty RAM, an incorrect/corrupt device driver, poorly written/updated software and more commonly under Windows XP Service pack 2, malware/adware installations.

I've run DXDIAG and it came back with no problems found.

I've checked the Graphics card driver and it says;

So did you try swapping your ram? you mention it was no help at all but did not mention if you tried any of the steps that error code may indicate.Also you Don't mention any system specs so trying to help is like a shot in the dark.
if you have more then one stick of Ram take one out and try again and if it still fails then swap the sticks and try one more time.

I think the issue might be your video card (and/or the driver that is running it) as neither can handle Direct X 9.0c graphics

What kind of computer are you running?

go to:
START>PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES>SYSTEM TOOLS>SYSTEM INFORMATION

and copy/paste the system details here so that you can see what
else might be wrong...if the computer is as old as the video card though, it might be a big problem

If your son doesn't already have them, you can get copies of
Flight Simulator 2004 (which has a lot of interesting material on flight in general, including the Wright Flyer) or Fly! (which is an older sim but still well done), relatively cheap....

These are great starter sims and have a good tutorial base if he
is interested in civilian flying.
