Root

suppose i enter gnome.I have to do this with a non -root account. After getting in how do i switch to root sa as i can stay there definitely. Because if i try "su" after a few commnands i get back to my previous user. Thank you...

I don't know if thats possible. I think the only way is the way you are doing.

Please refresh my memory on what distro that you are using. Are you trying to run su or sudo?
