I am trying to install Fedora on a computer that I will describe in a minute. The installation goes all right until I finish the Network Configuration screen. After entering the IP addresses and name of the computer, I press next and the install program displays an error dialog which says: "An error occurred when attempting to load an installer interface component. className = FirewallWindow".

I used the same CDs to install Fedora on a different computer yesterday and the insallation went fine.

The machine I'm trying to install Fedora on is an MCA computer with
Intel 450 MHz Pentium III;
128Mb of RAM;
6.0GB hard drive;
56Xmax CD-ROM drive;
ATi RAGE IIC AGF video card;
3Com Fast EhterLink 10/100 NIC;
IBM 10/100 EhterJet NIC;
Creative Labs Sound Blaster 16.

I don't know the brand of the motherboard. I didn't put this computer together, and suspect that most of the parts in it are the ones it was originally assembled with.

I would appreciate any suggestions you might have to help me install Linux on this machine.

Is this a Fedora Core 1 or 2 install?

One thing that I noted is that the minimum memory requirements for a graphical install of Fedora Core 2 is 192MB.

Are there any other os installs on this system?

Did you attempt to partition the drive with the Fedora tool during install or another partitioning package?

This is a Core 1 set of CDs.

I was able to install the CDs on another machine that only has 128Mb.

I forgot to mention in my originial post that the machine currently has Windows 98 installed, but I told the install to remove all current partitions and use the entire hard drive. I accepted the standard partitioning created by the installer.

danleff,

Thanks for your reply. I was able to find this page which suggests that the problem is cause by the Fedora Core Release 1's inability to partition and format some hard drives. However, after using SuSe 9.0 to partition and format the drive and Tom's Linux on a floppy to remove the content of the partitions, I once again tried to install Fedora and received the same error when I got to the Firewall page. Even though I had told the installer not to format any of the partitions.

I then tried to install Fedora using the text mode installer. I was able to partiton and format the drive and complete the install. smile

In case anyone else runs across this problem with Fedora Core 1, try using the text installer to complete the install.

This is one of the problems. If you have barely enough ram for the install (graphically) then some aspects of the install will fail. The text install uses less ram and probably is why it finally completed. Also, I suspect your processor speed is an issue as well. Remember, these two hardware requirements go hand in hand.

Ditto what danleff said. Anytime I install any distro onto a box short on RAM, I automatically go into text mode, if the distros default is to install with a pretty GUI. It took me a while to figure this out, after several issues such as those you mention.
