In my eyes this game is totaly Win2k/XP NOT compatible.
No matter what I tried it simply would not go.
As soon as you try to run it you simply get the message "Not supported under Windows NT" and that is as far as it goes.

My "fix" was to play Carmagrddon TDR2000 instead which incedently you should be able to pick-up at a bargain price as it's quite old now.

I was finally able to get this game to work, here is what I did:

First of all, if you install the patch you must crack the game with a no cd patch even though you have a legitimate copy. If you get the error that the game is not compatible with NT then this is what you need to do. Search for a patch on google.

Now I didn't get the error, but the game crashed whenever I tried to run it. I almost gave up till i stumbled on this by accident, If I have my MS sidewinder gamepad (the version that connects to the gameport) installed then I cannot play, but if i remove the controller, the game works great...this sucks of course because I like racing games with my gamepad.

If anyone is still looking to get this game running i hope this can help

this was observed with a Nforce2 MB in Win2k, DirectX 9.0a, Geforce3 ti 200 with 43.45 Dets

Believe it or not, you can get C2 to run with hardware 3D (640x480) and with a joystick/gamepad.

Once the game will run with hardware 3D, (with the shortcut changed to the CARMA2_HW.EXE file, and with compatibility set to Win95 and 640x480 resolution for good measure, Win2K users just need to switch to 640x480 res before playing) you only need one more peice of the puzzle that DosFreak was kind enough to suggest: OpenGLide. This basically translates (if I understand it correctly) the Glide functions from the application into OpenGL functions to the GPU. To use OpenGLide, all that's needed is to put the Glide2x.dll file that comes in the download into the C2 directory. Running the CARMA2_HW file alone apparently defaults to Glide rendering. Now there's some weirndess in the menu, but the game looks great. You can even make it look better than it ever looked by cranking up the anisotropic filtering and anti-aliasing settings under OpenGL! (might as well, since you can't increase the resolution). So why fake Glide? Well it appears that the bug that crashes the game when a joystick is attached is related to D3D rendering somehow, because using OpenGLide somehow gets by this bug.

I tried version 0.08 Final OpenGlide and it worked great. After trying one of the many 0.09 versions, I backed down to 0.08 again. Let me know if you try a version later than 0.08 Final and have good results. As far as the graphical anomalies in the menu, I don't know if they're hard on the graphics card (though my guess is they're not), so use at your own risk.

Pretty cool, eh? Oh, I suppose you've been waiting for an OpenGLide download page link, so there you go. wink

Oh, and the patch (this one I think is for the US version only) can be found on this page.

The patches for other versions can be found here.

For those who don't have a copy of the game you might find them here or in the software bargain bin section of a local store. I picked up a couple copies at Fred Meyer for less than $10 each. I suggest the 2 game pack. Might as well get two games (C2 and Crime Killers) for the same price as C2 alone.

500 views and no responses? ;(

BTW for those who don't have a good gamepad to play C2 with, I just bought and can recommend the Belkin Nostromo n45 Dual Analog USB GamePad. It can be purchased (at the time of this post) in the US for under $16 shipped free from buy.com. Each and every one of the 13 buttons (and even 8 way digipad) can (with the latest v2.6 drivers which are digitally signed by Microsoft) be bound to almost any (if not every) in game function.

My only complaint with it so far is that the analog pads are a bit close together, such that if you have the left one full right, and the right one full left, your thumbs might bump together, though the pads don't.

And, in case you were wondering, you can custom bind which axis goes to which analog pad. This means, you can bind the x axis to the left pad, and the y axis to the right pad. Which means you can drive the car like a remote controll RC car, one only steers left and right, the other only accelerates/brakes. I set it this way and also have two buttons set for accelerateing/braking. Works great. laugh

And about the OpenGLide... I have noticed one quirk. I was playing a map (Beaver City I think) and some of the polygons would get a tad dark, like there was a shadow when there wasn't. Similar to the effect of a UT map with BSP problems, though not the hall of mirrors effect. It was playable, however, and after exiting and re-entering the game, the problem seemed to go away.

Still, a big to those who made OpenGLide. And a notice to those who want to use it: you need a card that can handle OpenGL.

Not specifically. It's posted in a thread about loss of compatibility between v8 and v9 OpenGlide. People seem to be having more probs with v9 than v8.

Good news.

It SCi has apparently released a fix to make Carmageddon 2 XP compatible. So some (if not all, though I doubt it) of the steps above may not be necessary.

It can be found here:

Woohoo...Great thread to resurrect.

I can remember posting on this board many moons ago about C2. I could get it to work but not with a pad.

Can't wait to try this sometime over the next week.

(My time is taken up with playing 3 player gauntlet, Space Harrier, and Star Wars in Mame at the moment on my TV). laugh

All, bow down to DosFreak and Zeckensack for bringing back Carmageddon 2. I had given up hope on it, when my Radeon 9600 wouldn't render textures properly using OpenGLide.

Now, C2 is easier then ever to get going. I can't speak for everyone, but this is All I had to do to get it going:

1) Install Carmageddon 2 (standard install, just click setup.exe then nexts but NO to QuickTime 3.0 and DirectX 6 installations)

2) Download and installed zeckensack's glide wrapper (see DosFreak Post)

3) Open Glide wrapper window.

4) Right click on "Carmageddon 2 Carpocalypse Now" shortcut under Start > Programs > Interplay > Carmageddon 2... and then click properties. Click Compatibility tab and then click the box by "Run this program in compatability mode for:" and select windows 95. Check "Run this program in 640x480 if you have problems with the game (though I didn't) Then click OK to close the box

5) Run Carmageddon 2 using the start shortcut you just edited. Use the Glide renderer, as it should detect and default to.

Peice of cake. The Menu even looks good, something I haven't seen for a while. Works with USB input devices, such as my Logitech Formula GP Steering wheel just fine.

Sound isn't perfect, but then, I think it might've always had issues.

No more hoping for a good driving game to impliment Fox and the Hounds multiplayer, one of my favorite multiplayer driving modes that I'm very dissatisfied other high budget games haven't implimented. If Bugbear does their homework, they'll use it in FlatOut, but I doubt it.

Looking back, this game was pretty well ahead of it's time. Good destruction, collision, and damage in network, and the beginnings of ragdoll physics in singleplayer.

Anyone interested in buying it for dirt cheap, now that it appears to be very compatible, need only look here:

Hmmm... This doesn't work for me. I just get either "Sorry not win NT compatible" or, if I use the apparently wonderful XP patch from sci, it just does the standard windows dance of "carma2_hw.exe has performed an illegal operation".

I'm thinking maybe my dual core processor is causing problems. Like in System Shock II, to run it on XP Dual core PC, I have to C+A+D and disable one of the cores for the ss2.exe process, else it crashes once I'm passed the menu. I've tried that for the launcher, but to no avail.

I've tried using unsafedisc 1.5.5 on carma2_sw and carma2_hw, then applying the XP patch, even tried the 1.2 patch for the core .exe's. No win.

I've tried every damn combination of compatibility modes between carma2_hw.exe and carma2.exe, can't seem to get anywhere that way. Either nothing happens, or "illegal operation" happens.

I've installed the Glide wrapper, tried using glide, hardware, hardware software RGB emulation, pure software emulation. I'm out of ideas there.

I've beat Carma 1 like 15 times, so I wouldn't mind having a crack at Carma 2 one of these days. If any kind soul could help, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks guys.
Benjamin.
