I seem to have a sound problem with win2k and my santa cruz sound card. This is a random problem, but every so often, whether I'm playing a game or a cd sometimes the computer will lock up and the sound will start skipping and I must do a hard restart. I have every update for win2k and I have the latest drivers for the santa cruz. I also have the latest bios for my abit kx7-333. I have tried setting the dx sound acceleration down to basic but that didn't help. The only thing I haven't tried is switching the pci slot that the sound card is in, but I only have the sound card and a network card on the pci slots so I wouldn't think they would conflict. Any other ideas?

Just for the sake of argument, check the manual for your motherboard, and see if the pci slots in use are sharing an irq. Also, are you having the bios set up pnp or the operating system? Do you have another sound card you can swap out temporarily to test that? Let me know what you find out, and I'll try to come up with some more ideas. Good luck.

I don't have another sound card I could try. I checked my irq's in device manager and all of the irq's for my pci slots are all different. I tried the via pci latency patch just to see if that might help anything. We'll see what happens. From what I hear the santa cruz is a pretty stable sound card and not many people have problems. I am not sure what my bios is set to in regards to pnp or os, but I can check...

Exeter NH, eh? For what it's worth, I am originally from Laconia... Back to your problem, now. Have you had a chance to check the mobo manual? Often times in 2k/XP, IRQs will be emulated, so you really should take a look in the manual to ensure that IRQs are not being shared on those slots. BTW, when you experience the problem is there any activity on the NIC? If you can't find your manual, let me know, I have a stack of manuals around that I can check for you.

I also found this, off of the first link:

"What hardware compatibility issues are there?
One report that it is not possible to replace the Northbridge heatsink and fan with the Crystal Orb, as the mounting holes do not match.
Several reports of incompatibilities with the PNY Geforce 4 ti4600 card on the KX7-333RAID. This is apparently a fault with any board an on-board RAID controller.
One report of sound stutters using Turtle Beach Santa Cruz Sound Card"

No proposed solutions, but a known problem.
