I am trying to setup a workgroup to alllow shared access to a wireless broadband internet connection. The ISP does provide for multiple mailboxes. I have an evaluation version of Linkbyte(Comtun) to use for this purpose. My questions are as follows:
1. Is it better(easier) to use static addresses for the workgroup as opposed to DHCP?
2. Can you use DHCP on a workgroup with 2 Win2k machines and a Win98 machine as the proxy server?

The only thing that will be on the win98se machine is the operating system and the proxy server software, Linkbyte. According to the manual for the Linkbyte software it is a lot easier to configure with DHCP.

I have a peer to peer workgroup running between the 2 win2k machines now using a 4 port hub. Ideally I will have an 8 port switch running that will allow me to plug in my laptop in other rooms in the house for internet access and printer sharing. The laptop is on win98se also and I have two other rooms wired for access.

Thanks in advance.

doesn't mater DHCP is easier

that should work but win98 is not the most stable or best serving platform.

What i would recomend here is a win2k machine with 2 nics and ICS installed. This will do DHCP for your network and it will be a much more stable reliable fast solution compared to a 3rd party proxy on 98.[/quote]

Will the ics work with mozilla?
The main reason that I was using the win98se machine was to have something relatively inexpensive to repair running instead of having one of the win2k machines running. If need be I can load win2k on the 3rd machine and enable ics on it also.

Thanks

I absolutely refuse to use IE unless there is no choice.

You can setup ICS on 98 but 2000 would be more stable and ICS is easier to setup. ICS is just MS version of NAT. MS bought a program called NAT 1000 and incorporated it into Windows. You will have to set your other computers to obtain IP automaticlly and then just about all net programs will work. I am running NAT now and the only thing I can not do is file transfer in the Instant Messaging programs and stuff like dial pad.

If you want something easy and rather cheap, sell the machine you are putting the proxy or ICS on for a couple hundred and buy a Linksys BEFSR1 (8port cable/DSL router with built in NAT and DHCP). These sell for around $90 on pricewatch including shipping. Hope this helps.

I would prefer to set everything up on the win2k machine but the cisco PC350 wireless card refuses to install. States invalid data in driver. I have dl'd a new driver from the cisco site but get the same problem. works fine in the the 98se machine so i am forced to use it. since i'm using a wireless lan card i do not see a way to use a hardware router although that would be my preference.
and of course enabling the ics on the win98se machine gives me a file that states it is only compatible with 98 or earlier.
i have had no luck with the linkbyte(comtun) software so am now going to evaluate wingate and winproxy. anybody have any preferences for those two as far as ease of use and difficulty in setup. i am already using a static non-routable address from my isp.
