Linux and Yahoo messenger.....geez! - 11/09/03 10:24 AM

I'm using Linux from Lycoris and it's using the KDE desktop....i'm having trouble installing and using yahoo messenger.

I have the following file: rh9.ymessenger-1.0.4-i386.rpm

I click the file and it installs, but that's where I'm lost. What should I be doing next? Yea, i'm a sever newbie to linux - just jumping in there and pressing buttons and things to get used to it. I dug around in folders and found where it was installed, clicked a few things..nothing happens.

I've read some stuff about I need x-window. I'm not even sure what that is. I just want yahoo installed and working..I don't want an encylopedia of "how to use linux" or "linux for newbies"...so..can someone help me out?

I did successuflly get AIM (GAIM) installed and working, so that's cool. Just want yahoo now...

Don't worry if you're clicking on stuff you have X windows smile Gaim should work with yahoo. Just go to accounts at the login in screen click add and select protocol: yahoo add your screen name and password.

if you want to use the yahoo client... from a terminal type.
Code:
whereis ymessenger
that should give you the location of the app. If it's in your path you can type
Code:
ymessenger
and it should launch for you. if it's not you may need to type the whole output of your whereis command.
Code:
/usr/bin/ymessenger
....or somthing like that.

If it was me I'd use gaim or psi for everything. God luck.

I would recommend GAIM also. Works great!
