What chip to buy

I have 2 questions First one is i am looking too get a new system am would like some input
as to what chip two buy the PIII or the Athlon. I have heard good and bad on the Athlon? and i don't want a P4. Second is what is overclocking and can it be done to my PIII600eb is it just a matter of jumper settings and what are the pros and cons of it?

I'd have to say Athlon--you can get a much faster chip out of the box with that than with an intel chip(with a given amount of money).

If you buy an AMD, buy a KT133a board such as the Abit Kt7a

the 600e may get up to 800(eb).

compatibility, customer support. i want less troubleshooting and more playing.
my brothers have had several amd chips fail.
i have never had a pentium fail, and im an avid oc'er

I would say go with Intel. I used to own AMD Athlon 750 but couldn't get it to work with Win2k. I am pretty sure it wasn't AMD's fault. It was because of stupid VIA chipset not having proper support for Win2k. But that was like last summer so VIA might have better support in Win2k now but I don't know. Now, I am staying away from VIA. I specifically looked for Intel chipset when I built my Intel system. With Intel, you can't go wrong. It is just that Intel chips are more expensive. In a way, it is worth it because I won't have to waste time patching just to get everything working.

Go with the Athlon, or if your really strapped for cash the Duron (supposedly it's rated on average 90% of the Athlon). Right now the only two probs with AMD chips are heat, just get a good hsf at least a Cooler Master, and gaming issue under Win2K but AMD has a patch on there site. Either go with the Asus A7V or the Abit KT7 they're the only ones you want if you're going for performance. If you want to OC an Intel you have to do it by the FSB, while AMD's chips have to have the L1 bridges closed. Just use a #2 pencil to do this.
Unless you want to have a dual proc system or don't want to worry about the CPU getting hot, don't go with Intel right now. Nothing wrong with Intel, but performance isnt coming from them.
